a little known fact: Right before GM pulled the plug on the Fiero, the plan was to shoehorn the Grand National 3.8 Turbo V6 into the little sports car. So this vid gives an idea, (though this one is supercharged and hopped up a bit), of what the Fiero could have been had it survived a little longer. Typical GM. They finally build something decent and axe it.

The reason GM never produced a 3800 Supercharged Fiero GT was Performance & Sales competition with the Corvette

Last article I read the 89 fiero was going to have the 275 hp prototype dohc 3.4 in and it was a drivable one and was quicker and faster than the corvette in everything .

Yeah, like the Pontiac Banshee. When I found out about it, I added one to my dream car list. I'd get a C3 Corvette and swap in a Pontiac 455 and modify the body and tail lights to look like the Banshee. I wouldn't do the pop up headlights though. I've always hated that. ​@@cameronvandygriff7048

I totally agree that a super charged 3800 is the way to go. It's just sitting at a perfect balance point between power, handling, and durability. It's not a one trick pony you'll only enjoy at the drag strip.

This brings back memories. I had a friend in high school that had a Fiero with a heavily modified GM 5.0 V8 (Fiero was just out of production then). That thing was wicked. There was absolutely NOTHING it couldn’t take down. Exotics couldn’t even touch it.

@@Way2EasyDIY Camaros and Firebirds back in the day had a 5.0. If I remember correctly, it was what the 3800 V6 was later based upon. GM also had a 5.0 on the Cadillac Broughams of the ‘80’s. I believe my buddy’s donor car was an IROC Camaro.

@@Way2EasyDIY I think the L98 or LT1 5.7 replaced the 5.0. Not the most amazing motor, but with a little work and dropped into a Fiero, it was unbelievable.

The Fiero's Shape is ICONIC!!! I had a Buick Lesabre T-Type and wanted to Supercharge it so bad. I loved the forward opening of the hood. The 3800 V-6 was an AWESOME Engine!!!!

Like most cars that I like, I like most of the views of the hero but there are a couple that I would perhaps tweak if I had any design aesthetic ability in me.

Just a few minutes in, that instrument cluster looks good grafted to the dash.

This video speaks the truth, I have an '88 fiero with this swap, and it surprises a lot of people at the stoplights. I also love the looks I get when I blip the throttle as I pass someone just enough for them to hear the loud whine.

Appreciate that, glad I'm motivating somebody & the truth is, years ago - there's a video out there that motivated me to do my 3800 super charge and I haven't regretted it for one second!

I've had 7 Fiero's. Two brand new ones. Now I have none and wish I had one so bad. They were my cars working two jobs and going to college. I had two at once. Brand new 88 Formula and a used 88 GT. First was an 84 SE. Your car is damn Awesome!!! I'd like to swap supercharged 3800 to a Formula! Its too bad they gave up on them. I read where the head guys told Pontiac they didn't want another two seater competing with the Corvette. I still love the Fiero's! They bring back so many memories!

Putting that 3800 in a Formula was a great choice. I have owned 2 Fiero’s in my life…a black 84 4spd and a 2 white 85 5 spd. I loved those cars and they were stock. I cold not imagine a 3800 with some pulleys and exhaust…. I love it!

In 1985 I was working at taco bell. A super cool girl I worked with owned a white 84. She parked and ran to her friends house for a few minutes. I was in the passenger seat and decided to start it. It was a manual and it of course jerked forward. At that time I didn't even know how to drive stick. I told myself from that point I was going to get one, one way or another. And I did. . . Fantastic Video sir.

Great video! Imagine a 3800 SC racing against exotic such as Ferrari, McLaren, Lamborghini, even Porsche and cost at a fraction of the cost from the four. I noticed this had a automatic transmission, which is great. However I've seen better days with even a 5 speed manual gearbox. Not only it's fun to drive with a 3800 SC V6 hooked up but this will unleashed pure power. Overall I love that Fiero SC, one of a kind.

You can build an 10 second Fiero, for between $8k, and $10k, but if you don't include upgraded brakes, and suspension, those exotics will eat it. KZread search "Hoonigan Vs. the World, finale" 2000 hp mustang... 10 part series, and the final car he has to beat? You guessed it, a Fiero... for all the reasons this guys talking about. Except one thing. The whole "torque monster" thing? Has nothing to do with it being a Fiero, or a 3800 series engine. That's all in the tuning. You could build the exact same car as this guy has built, and have a higher horsepower number than your torque number. That all depends on how the the engine is tuned, nothing to do with what type of car it is, and very little to do with the engine.

Oh, and even though there are some model Lambos and Ferraris that a worked Fiero CAN compete with. No Fiero on the planet can keep up with McLarens slowest car... and this is coming from someone who HATES McLarens, I just happen to know all of these cars performance stats, and I'm being realistic... and it does happen, Fieros rolling up on these exotics. You know what you'd like? KZread search "Hoonigan Vs the World Finale" ... it's a 2000 hp Mustang, Vs an 8 second Fiero. You'll like it...

I came home on leave and find a Fiero sitting in the driveway..............I was fascinated by this car.

I almost bought a new Fiero in 1984. All I could find was 4 cyl automatic , a no go. As a Pontiac fan from the late 60s. I still love the Fiero , cool ass little car. 1973 Firebird 1972 455HO 1990 ZR-1 Corvette , still room for a Fiero. You have a bad ass ride , well done.

Those are often overlooked motors by those who have never been in a car with one. I drove one of the first gen Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with a pulley, air intake and chip. It still had stock exhaust and no cam and that thing was shockingly fast. Putting that into the super light Fiero would be a wild ride.

People have been doing this mod for years. Some people drop in the Northstar V8. They sell complete kits to install and wire in either engine.

for those who want to know. i did exactly this to a 84gr 4apd. all i did was change the blower pulley. i made alot of camaro and mudstain owners hostile😂😂😂

With my fiero I just supercharged the original 2.8 L v6 along with some other mods and it works great! 👍 nice car you have there, great video .

@@Toys4Life mine did that in high-school, but hey how did you get the engine wiring harness and ecm for the 3.8 sc? I've been wanting to do the swap but I don't know how to get a stand alone ecm or make a wiring harness

I had a 3800SC fiero, an 88gt, I put a small pulley on the series 2, motor and headers and it really came alive. I used the Buick trans that came with it. It was a great well balanced car. It was also I believe the first Legal engine swap done in California!! I now have another 88 gt with a 2006 Pontiac LS-4 and trans in it! It is also legal in California, passing all smog standards. It was the first LS4 Fiero ever done..in 2006. I drive the car regularly and it makes the cool Rump-rump noises I like... I never get gas and an old guy asks me what is in it, because they know it sounds different. All work on both were done by West Coast Fiero in Tehachapi, California. They are the only Fiero shop left..give Chris West a call..

I owned an 86 GT that was converted by ACE that got it's BAR certification in January of 1998. That was the first legal L67 swap in California as far as I've been able to tell. Was yours earlier?

I loved my 84 fiero it was my first car and for a light low car it performed great in the snow I was extremely surprised

Love your videos! My 86 Se Notchie is stockish… and mint. 3800 when my 2m6 dies, but it’s still running well. Will have to wait.

Honestly, if I had any money this is exactly what I'd do. My old man passed earlier this year and I was left with his 86 SE that had been sitting for the last 8 or 9 years. I'd love to put the thing on the road and throw the SC in there but it'll just be way too much money for all the work it needs

I think I'm going to keep my Fiero stock, I want to preserve it's history and showcase the Iron Duke. Not too many of them are around anymore.

Not many left because of the faulty pushrods from factory. Those Dukes are ticking time bombs. That us the only fiero to do it to. I'd be listening to that thing with a stethoscope every 500 km and have ample fire insurance.

@@CanadaBob11 I don't really know anything about the pushrod problem, but it was prone to fires due to a smaller oil pan, which honestly wasn't that big of a deal if you just kept up regular maintenance. Luckily my Fiero was a recall, it has a much bigger oil pan now.

Wheels look absolutely perfect on this car. One sweet, sweet ride bro.

My mom.bought a red fiero formula in 1988...that thing was a spaceship back then! Lots of companies started butting v8s and v12s in them and body kits. Some well done body kit v12 fieros had numbers on par with "real" super cars. One outfit back in the day was Exotic Illusions out of New Jerset...the original owner was Italian and had worked for Lamborghini back in the 70s and reproduced actual Lamborghini bodies for fieros and got in trouble. They put massive v8 and v12 engines in them and built out the original framework...artists. These cars were no joke.

@@Toys4Life the stock 84 4:10 4 speed right now. It’s lasted 3000 miles so far.

Honestly, I'm leaning towards a LSJ Ecotec as a transplant into my '88 Formula - quite a bit lighter being a aluminum-block I4 vs. a cast-iron V6, and they are available with 5- and 6-speed manual transaxles. Doesn't take too much to get them into the high-200hp/low-300hp range, and gives a better weight balance for an autocross car.

Got my first fiero! 87 GT. Needs a lot of work to get it in decent driving condition. Restoring the suspension now. It has tapping under load which I've gathered is bad gasket or cracked manifold. Wondering if I should even fix it since I know I'll be doing the swap at some point. Thoughts?

Front 2.8 v-6 exhaust manifolds are known for two things. Cracks & broken studs when trying to remove and repair the ex manifold. If that is your issue, I would leave it for sure as is if you are going to swap the engine anyway.

When you had the transmission rebuilt did the builder add a limited slip differential to the rebuild? If so who sells them?

He did not. The funny thing is, ninety-nine percent of the time as long as you're not on water or something really slippery, both Wheels will lay down rubber. I might add a teeny bit of weight to the passenger side because if things are a little slippery, that wheel will spin by itself oh, but it is rare.

I had a 2000 gtp coupe back then and it was a fun car. Especially with a pulley. There was no real support for tuning back then like there is today but I always loved that engine.

I have seriously been thinking about doing this. Ideally I feel like I want to get an 87 GT formula or to M6. I just like the body style better than the last year in 88 when they changed it all up. I'm curious which model or which year of 3800 out of which car is the best one to choose. I'm just not sure which Pontiac car was but I know there was a car out there with a 3800 not only have the supercharger on it but had a water-to-air intercooler underneath the supercharger and put up more horsepower than any other version of the 3800. Extinct that was either Grand Prix or a Bonneville sccc. I'm also wondering if there any cars that suspension and brakes can be pulled from for Better handling?

Problem is it is a ton of work - unless someone is just wanting to unload theirs - it would cost close to 10k or so to replicate...

I had my Fiero GT back in 1991 , still remember , great car for that time , now i have two 1992 SSEi Bonnevile , 1999 Cadillac STS Seville (yes with Northstar, rebuild by Northstar Performance studs) 1999 Dodge Grand Caravan Lxi , 1995 Mercedes S420 Coupe and 2007 Phaeton W12 , old car is best , i thinking about this rebuild abouth 2015 , i must do this ! Great video , thank you !

Nice! This one runs 11.80 at 114 mph - but I want to go deeper into the 11's while not blowing up the tranny. Thinking of porting my G3M90 and blocking the coolant ports in the manifold to SC. Thoughts?

These engines are pretty good when given a bit of boost, over here in Australia we made an upgraded version of the 3800 called the 3.8 Ecotec that came with those superchargers on them factory in our commodores in a couple of trim levels (known as the L67 engine), however as far as I’m aware they only came with the 4 speed slush box auto in those trims, which bogged them down quite a lot, but some people swapped them over to manual they have quite a bit of go for a 6.

Yeah, buddy! Got one. '86SE. The 3800SC swap is about 80% done. Needs exhaust plumbed. Can't wait for that first fire up. It's gonna be an OH BABY moment for sure!

Makes me miss my 85 GT Notchie manual. Mine was superchipped, better manifolds and exhaust. Maybe 150bhp. But it was enough in that little car.

@@Toys4Life ,. Bro I'm so pumped you were able to pull off your build. I'm 53 , the Fiero has always had a spot in my heart. I day dreamed of the idea 💡 Grand National 3.8 inter cooled Turbo. Of course that was in 1987 when I thought of it. You really did what every gearhead wanted to do. back then it would have been financially impossible. GM was and made sure that engineers were not to even entertain your idea. So you have fulfilled many people's dreams building a outstanding Fiero . The 3800 is way better choice for the car. I don't think the Buick 3.8 would have fit. The heat it would generate more then likely would have been a hurdle. Once again Great job bro 👍😊

when I turned 18, I bought a 85 Gt from my supervisor. Black w/ Gray, 4 speed manual, american racing rims and bra on the front. A few years after buying it I blew it up trying to show off to my best friend. dumbest thing I ever did. I put split fires in it and was not able to remove one of them. That was the piston that went through the block. biggest mistake of my life upto that point

Oh my, I remember the split fire scam. They had good advertising but of course they died and gone away.

I had an 02 GTP 40th anniversary edition coupe with a 3.4 pully with supporting mods and it was quick, but this fiero is crazy 🔥 🔥!!!!!

They typically spin both tires though, at least they sure as hell do with the 3800 supercharged in the car.

I'm not sure about the footage in this video - but the car has run several 11.80s at 114 mph, 75 degrees, lite to no wind 1,000 ft above sea level.

The last time I saw one out on the road was a few weeks ago when I took mine out for the last drive of the season.

I've owned a fiero almost my whole driving life. Two gts and one 85se .last year had an accident in the se.guy ran the stop and it was totaled. So fieroless for the first time.plan on getting another this fall either with the supercharged 3.8 or a v8.im tired of the 2.8! Me and my girlfriend currently both have 95 vettes.hers is a coupe mines a convertible.looking at your c5 and kind of thinking to upgrade.maybe even z06.love your taste in cars.you got a new subscriber!

Thank you , you know the Fiero is really the corvette C8 Version 1 - right? The current C8's are Version 2's. That may seem silly but you KNOW gm learned some darn good lessons from the Fiero program - both good and bad. I think they took the good and made sure they didn't repeat the bad.

I just picked up a Fiero SE 2m6 for 500 bucks in Backus Mn. The car is all there but the guy said the transmission (4spd manual) doesn't quite work, it has 55k miles and is dripping in 80's nostalgia (love it!). Once I get this in my shop and start investigating and opening things up I will be very interested in the 3800 if the 2.8 gives me problems.

I had a 1986 2M6 SE blew up the original motor going from Sacramento to Reno after work on a Friday. Rebuilt a donor motor bored it .20 over installed a 3/4 race cam and had some work done on the heads increased the size of the injectors and beefed up the 5 speed manual gear box and clutch. It dyno'd at 380 HP. This was back in 91.

Sounds like a fun project but to be honest, I I'm struggling to imagine a 2.8 putting out 380 crank horsepower without a significant amount of boost.

@@Toys4Life combination of cam head intake and exhaust and the performance chip I added. I forgot to mention the chip in my previous post.

Working on getting an 88GT that hasn't run in 12 years back on the road. Definitely want to do that swap once I get all the many things it needs just to be safe sorted out. I love that rear spoiler too. Where did that come from?

Thank you sir! I built the spoiler several years ago. I've had fieros for years so I needed to change it up a little bit.

This gives me ideas for another 3.8l v6, but it's overhead cam and has valve lift on the intake cam.

Man I love this 👏👏👏👏 Bravo Bravo 👍. I was thinking about doing this the my car. I have a 1989 Oldsmobile Regency 98. It has 3.8 or 3800 motor as well. I missed my car I need to get it back on the road.

​@@Toys4Life Oldsmobile. That would be hilarious, if he could avoid any changes that would reveal what's under the hood. Even the stock 3800 was way more power than most of their owners needed.

Love it. Looks like the rear is lower than the front is the 3800 supercharged that heavy? I’m sure it’s awesome in a straight line but is it good at handling? I think I’d definitely be interested in something like that but I got a GN engine sitting around I could use lol.

I haven't noticed that the rear seats lower, I actually cut the front and the rear springs a little bit to lower it an inch. 84 to 87 heroes aren't known to handle great without some serious mods. I don't roll race the car so I haven't upgraded the front and added a rear sway bar which would be the first order of business.

I just got my 1988 formula fiero last week. 42k original miles. Added it to my 1991 Camaro RS that had 28k miles on it. I love the drives that both offer and while mods are cool, they will both remain original. Reason: I have a 1988 Trans Am GTA that I bought 14 years ago, from the original owner, with 46k miles. I drive fine with every car I own except my GTA. In that car I cannot help but be a true ahole. It's not me. It's the car.

Seen a red 88 notchie on the road today when i was driving it. Powered by a caddy 4.9. Seen a burgandy 87 GT with a 3800sc when i pulled my red 88 into my driveway.

Nicely Done my friend! You built a BEAUTIFUL Rubber Burning Machine lol! That car really is super sharp! I f@#$in love Pontiac's! Always had a couple of them in my arsenal. I miss my 87 Fiero GTP. It was fully loaded, blacked out limo tint and I painted it GM Galaxy Silver. The same color of the 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Daytona 500 Edition that I pulled the engine from. Sadly, my Grand Prix was totaled when a drunk idiot rear ended me in a Ford F1Shitty. It was the 1st car that I ever financed and I worked my ass off working 2 jobs just to get it and pay it off within 2 years. It was MY weekend car w/ 64k miles on the odometer. I already had the Fiero GT, it was my project car. I was restoring the interior & suspension. The 2.8l had a rod knock w/ about 88k miles on the O.D. I was going to drop in the Northstar V8 until that jackass killed my baby. That's how I came 2 drop in the Mighty Bullitt Proof 3800 Series II Supercharged V6. I also installed the PWR 2 front, 2 toned Grey leather seats from the GTP in the Fiero. I bought the 16" chrome 5 Star wheels from a 99 Grand AM GT. She had a very nice stance. Looked very athletic. Anyway, I dropped about $5k total 2 make it happen and man she was the baddest Fiero around! Super clean & super quick too, smoking Mustang GT 's all day easy! She looked like a lil spaceship 2 be honest. Sold her for $8,200 when my son was born and bought a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer SS AWD 2 do the Family thing you know. But I really miss How much fun that car was 2 drive. Went through 4 sets of tires smoking the tires. Definitely the easiest restore ever and I could have done it way cheaper but I had the cash 2 burn from the settlement so I just did it. Fiero Store has EVERYTHING you need 2 build that car from the ground up. PERFECT Father & Son project. My daily was a 1986 Grand Prix LE. It was a 2 Tone Bright Blue Paint with that darker blue stripped... ground effects? I'd guess you'd call it, it wrapped around the bottom of the car & bumpers and had the chrome trim at the very bottom. It had the blue cloth interior with a center console, power windows & locks. Everything except for T-Tops. She was a very sharp looking car that thieves continuesly tried to steal. 1986 was the first year that Grand Prix's came with a Computer. But I had 305 H.O. from an Camaro Z28 with it's Trans, (700R4 I believe) with the Rear End from a 85 Monte Carlo SS (3.73 ratio I think) she wasn't winning any races but she was a perfect A-B Cruiser & The Flowmaster Duel Exhaust made her sound tough. I beat the hell out of that 305 Chevy SB & she took it np. Never left me stranded. My Sincere Apologies 4 this super long comment down memory lane. I hope I made sense cuz I'm not gonna Proof Read it lol I'm STONED 2 THE BONE RIGHT NOW with a lil Midnight Toke Action 🥴 Awesome Fiero GTP Sir. Makes me want 2 buy another.... but the WARDEN.... I mean wife... won't let me 😠 Take Care Brother and enjoy that Pontiac as much as you can! Stay Safe out there!

Back in 1997 I was 17, I seen a red Fiero for sale on my way to work. I did not have a car yet and rode a bicycle 12 miles round trip. I worked at a local grocery store in southern Utah and made like 7-8 bucks an hour. I wanted that Fiero, and I wanted it bad. The seller had it parked in the lot of the air conditioning repair shop he owned, and he only wanted $3200 for it. The car was in good condition, but it needed tires and a few other things to pass the state inspection I was told. I worked as much as I could and picked up hours any chance I could at work. I would stop and look at the car every time I rode to work to see that it had not sold yet and to motivate myself. After about 3 and a half months, the day came when I got the paycheck I needed to get the car. There was a bank in the grocery store I worked in. I cashed the check and quickly rode towards home and was excited to see the beautiful red Fiero shinning in the hot desert sun as I went by the A/C shop. I had to get the rest of the cash I had saved. I rode back to the A/C shop and the car was gone. I went inside to talk to the seller, and he said it had sold about ten minutes before I had arrived. I was so sad. All that hard work. I had just seen the car on my way home. I told myself that it just wasn't meant to be. I ended up buying a 87 Nissan Pulsar with most of the money I saved, and the transmission went bad after only 2 months. Isn't life great.

I bought a brand new Fiero 2M4 (2.5L "Iron Duke" and a 5 speed) in 1986. Base model, only options were alloy wheels and a luggage rack on the rear deck. I kept it completely stock, and enjoyed the hell out of it for 11 years, when I finally needed a car with a back seat. I wound up replacing it with a 1984 2 door Caprice Classic. I put some mid '70s Corvette rally wheels and RWL 225/70-15 tires on it, along with a cowl induction hood and a nice sounding exhaust system. Never touched the engine. I have had a number of drag race cars, but they didn't work well on the street. I see no reason for more power in a strictly street car.

To each their own, if I had a hardcore commute or did a lot of driving I might actually get a Prius. Don't laugh, the newest generation of Prius actually looks a little bit cool.

Neat little toy…it’s really to bad GM did not build them with the supercharged 3800. I’d love an 87 GT with that power plant. Thanks for sharing your Fiero…great video…now I’m searching the old inter webs looking for one :)

The '90 Fiero GT was going to come with a 220hp 3.4l TDC V6, but GM killed it before it got past the prototype stage. :-(

That might have saved the Corvette by killing the high performance Fiero...

Working out the kinks on my l67 Fiero swap. Hopefully have it running in a week.

I am doing this project, Pontiac fiero 3800/F40 with a turbo, will be a cool mid engine car twincharged and 6 speed!🤩

I had a red 2am4 a long time ago. I miss it

ahh, i have a 87" GT, did the 3400 swap years ago... plan was to go with a turbo. never got around to getting the turbo though, but man this is nice! :)

Oh how I miss that supercharger whine! That Fiero looks like a hoot to drive -- especially being about a thousand pounds less than a Grand Prix, MC or Regal

@@Toys4Life There's a guy racing a Fiero at Ronkonkoma speedway for the 'spectator drags' in a one lap race around the track. It appears to be a bit finicky around the sharp corners and wants to swap ends like a Porsche if not set-up correctly. Cool car, i wanna drive it!
