In regard to makeup brushes and name brands: My husband asked me what I'd like for Valentines day about 18 years ago. The only thing I could think of was makeup brushes. Thinking he'd go to Walmart or Target I never gave it another thought. However, he went to the Fashion Mall near his office, walked in to Saks and purchases a set of Chanel brushes at nearly $300. Tho I tried to talk him into taking them back he refused. I still have them and they're STILL LIKE BRAND NEW. I just use my shampoo to clean them and let them dry and you'd never know they were almost two decades old.

Being frugal sometimes means buying it for life. Going with name brand item that's $80 over the $20 can be smart if it's a long term purchase. The name brand will last for 15 years and the other item lasts for 2 years and you end up spending less money in the long run, as well as being better for the environment.

Frugal people are comfortable in their skin. They are not defined by external consumerism hype. They often have an internal calm that others don’t have. They are proud of their self sufficiency. That’s not true for cheap people.

Yes! My grandfather comes from the same generation. I remember visiting my great grandma who lived through the Great Depression. And it really didn’t occur to me why she lived the way she did. Canned everything. Grew what she could. Saved everything! From the elastics on worn clothing and stitched up a set of curtains from old house dresses. My grandfather was raised right and is the best man I know. His hard work ethic, honesty, and straight shooting values... they don’t make people like that anymore. I really believe your generation of people is the best generation.

I’m still kind of young, though “behind” my friends socially. There are times I find myself jealous of the fact I don’t have a nice vehicle (bought my 2000 Silverado off the dad of a former coworker in cash increments over about six weeks) or that I don’t have the means to buy a house and am living with friends while I save for an apartment. Then I have to stop to remind myself that my friend who has a nice vehicle for both herself and her husband have a ton of credit card debt. My friend that owns her house has outrageous student loan debt that she’ll be paying off for decades. I may have debt, but at the rate I’m going, I’ll be able to have it all paid off within the next year and a half. I was also the most prepared financially when the pandemic hit and everything shut down. It really helped for me to put everything into consideration before wishing for their lives.

Unless it's an urgent need (like a new suit) I ALWAYS buy "Clearance" FIRST. And fir that urgent new suit? I'll shop around and look up online who has what sales FIRST. It used to be clearance only happened after an event, holiday or season; but now they start clearance early! One can buy shorts and T-shirts and beach towels in mid July! One can buy a clearance winter coat in mid January! And I can dig in the bargain bins with the best of them! Also, there are online places to get cheap stuff.. like craigslist. Name brand: I am not a huge name brand clothing person. But when I started grad school my father bought me a Coach tote bag for my books and lap top. It was $600 was was a crazy amount of money for my family. I couldn't believe he bought it. I have now been carrying that bag for 15 years and it still looks brand new and professional. I use it for work daily to haul my work files and lap top. There is no way a cheaper bag would have held up. I do buy bottled water but like you its for emergency only. I lived with a well for a decade. When we had power outages we would lose water. Once we were without water for 2 weeks. Due to that I keep gallons of bottled water on hand just in case.

A tip for free events, at least in the before times, is that some public libraries offer passes for museums and sometimes other places like zoos, that you can check out. So, you don't get the pass indefinitely and the library doesn't have unlimited amounts; they're checked out kind of like books - for a certain amount of time and the library only has a certain number of passes they can check out at one time. Also, many people forget that libraries also have DVDs, both of movies and tv shows.

I don’t necessarily like the “you DIY rather than hiring out”. Been there, done that...buuuuuut if it took me 4 hours and 2 trips to the hardware store, that isn’t being frugal, that’s just a waste of time (and my time is worth more than what the professional would have accomplished in less than half the time). Hubby and I both work full time and I have a 3yo and 8mo old. We are both handy and practical, but some things are worth spending the money on! I think frugality is more about seeing the value in things, not just the cost!

We are now in our 60's and paid for movers. First time. Definitely more expensive than pizza and beer for friends but I lived to tell the tale. They were able to do in hours what would have taken me weeks to accomplish. I also hire a housekeeper occasionally for a deep clean. I'm in good shape but that stuff just kills my back. It's easier for me to go to work for a day to pay someone than to take a day off, do it myself, and spend a week in bed. But it was different in my 20's. So where you are at in life makes a differnence.

We do two things about water that helps with other things #1 when I have empty quart canning jars I clean them ,fill with water and process for 5 min in my water bath canner(you can use preused seals for this as it's not a food safety issue) then store in my canning pantry then I have clean jars ready to go for next canning season plus emergency water if needed. #2 I save 1/2 gallon milk jugs, clean them squeaky clean, fill with water (you can add a drop if bleach if you want,we dont) freeze in my large freezers, they help take up the empty space making the freezer more efficient plus they are great for using in my coolers for picnics, camping, grocery shops, trips to keep things cold plus they are ready to wash up with as they melt and also as emergency water if needed. 😊 (that being said we do keep a case or two of bottles especially during this year but it's for emergencies or to offer my parents for the car ride home or trips when filling reusables isnt an option.)

The nice side of town is hardly ever out of BOGO items b/c I believe the people who shop there aren't shopping for sales. One day, pre Covid, I was trying to use a "rain check." She said she had never done it before on the register b/c people in that area didn't request or use them. My mind was blown. The stores in the nice part of town also have the best clearance rack b/c I'm about the only person looking on them for a deal.

So much of being frugal is "life skills." Being able to COOK is a huge one. Trying "safe" diy projects to learn is great. Do not start remodeling your house if you can't hold a hammer. That's just a great profit for a contractor. But, it is also true that "you have to have money to save money." As a single Mom there were times when I had to shop on the out-of-pocket instead of the best value. Buying that bigger pack of meat that was a little cheaper wasn't always possible. That, of course, was before Dollar Tree to help with stuff like deodorant and toothpaste.

Willette B Life's Journey: regarding your mortgage payment please set aside an extra $100 or so every month to make an extra 1 payment every year but label it as "principal only" if you'll do this, it will reduce a 30 yr mortgage to 20 years. You'll save about $95k by doing this over the price that you'll have to pay for the entire life of the mortgage. You danced around this one key piece of advice when you touched on buying bottled water and drinking expensive coffee. It's something I read many, many years ago and have maintained quite well over the course of the years: DRINK AT HOME This applies to just about anything that you could drink, including water, soda, coffee, wine, and beer. Have your own supply at home. Bring bottled tap water with you. Have your happy hour at home rather than outside the home. I find it incredible how many people are walking around with cups of coffee for which they paid $5, when they could have made the same cup for 1/10 the price at home. This is especially true if you want to add a dairy-free beverage to your coffee (like almond milk).

I dropped both ingredients on a plate side by side and tap my brush on each of the ingredients about the same amount and rubbing it on my brush so it can get all evenly. Then run the brush under hot water to rinse it off until I see the water totally clear. Then I used paper towels to absorb the water off as much as I can then hang them tip down by used rubber bands to tie on the end and hook them on a hanger to let them air dry for couple days.

Currently melting snow for flushing. Good times😕 Side note, lived in PA and we would have below freezing weather for a month at a time with zero issues.

@@busybecky6327 I would say add a FP or a wood stove to keep at least 1 room of the house warm! I've been telling people that charcoal burns hotter than wood. I'm currently located in Temple but I've been volunteering to help rebuild Marlin for several years now. I'm keeping a note pad full of things that need to be added to help people in the future once the power gets back online. This is nuts!

I like to multi-task when I run errands, so I window shop whole I'm shopping for the things I need 😄 and then look for those expensive items elsewhere cheaper. That's how I got my Dyson dupe (like knock off of the knock off, yet works just as well) vacuum for $50 (tax and shipping included)

I love the last one. When my kids were young they couldn't understand why we didn't have/do what their friends parents had/ did. Then they realized that we were able to pay for everything and their friends' parents bought on credit. (like why do we have a crappy car when so-and-so has a brand new truck)

Christine, thanks for all your inspiration! Re #10: My grandmother used to say, "Buy cheap, buy twice." She didn't mean that you should always look for the most expansive version of what you need, but that you should prioritize quality over price as much as possible. Re #11: Yes, I started my retirement account the same time you did, and boy, oh, boy, has it paid off! Always buy when the market is down. I'm invested in a Total Stock Market Index Fund that tracks the entire market (hence the name). I put in a little every month (because I only have a little), but if the market goes down more than 2% over a week, I put in any extra money I have. Re #17: I've had my iPhone 6 Plus since 2014! (But, like you, I may get a new one this year for the better camera.)

This is a great video! I had to quit my job for health reasons & was grateful that I had saved because it has taken three years to get better & I still have further to go. What I learned was that even though I had saved I could have cut more out of my spending & placed it into my savings. Marketing will always make you feel that you won’t be successful unless you have...fill in the blank. Videos like this remind me that I was on the right track then & am learning to make even better money choices now. Thank you!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

Samuel Barrett: I was hoping for a Black Friday sale but the Covid shutdown has screwed that up. I need to get new appliances but I'm putting on layaway 1 at a time at Sears and paying them off without a credit card bc I want to reduce debts not add them up. The name of the game is debt reduction. Maybe look for someone who buys a new house but changes all of their appliances as soon as they move in?? It happens!
