Is it going to be like the last 30 year submarine modernization plan? The only hope we can lay on is the SSBN program which is directly monitored by PMO. As the infra will get idle soon, better to launch SSN program under the same roof.

A good analysis. Keeping the past in mind we can only hope this plan is actually implemented. Also two mistakes in this video. First, a sub's capability is not reduced when it's alone. That is it's main purpose. It's most effective when It's alone. It's role in a carrier group is important but secondary. In this situation, it's capability is restricted by what is determined by the CO of the task force. Second, the Chinese Navy is not a paper tiger! The reason why there were no hostilities between the US and China is because neither side wanted to fight each other. Also China is not yet ready for a full invasion of Taiwan. But they will be by the end of the decade. In the 1990's the US could sail a carrier group in the Taiwan stright and China could do nothing about it. This time the US had four carriers but they kept their distance. 10 years from now they will have to stay further away. We Indians love to deride the Chinese military capabilities. But they are way ahead of us in almost every aspect and will soon be in a position to challenge the US Navy in the waters around Taiwan. By the way, Nancy Pelosi's visit had nothing to do with US' military capability. In fact, they told her not to go! She went anyway for her own political reasons. So the US had to display it's full naval might to the world.

India definitely need close to 40 submarines for deterrence. I hope navy don't push for a third aircraft carrier soon and see the big picture and make an indigenous nuclear aircraft carrier of 60000-70000 tonnes by 2035-40 as reactor tech will take atleast 10-15 years for complete development to power such a big aircraft carrier.

@@anshulsingh8326 Obviously submarines are important as of now, coz all those p75 projects got delayed, the proposed strength of 30 submarines couldn't be achieved till now, and there are multiple submarines that are close to retirement, i mean what can indian navy do with such a paltry submarine fleet.

I don’t think the tally will reach 30+ submarines by 2030. I dont know about timeline but s5 class will take time and lets assume first s5 comes by 2027-2029. Then rest of s5 class will start getting delivered. Also about p75i we don’t know when actually work will get start? So the number looks good on paper but difficult when we keep it in our timeline.

yes navy is much better cause they do most of buying from indian shipyards unlike our airforce p-75i and lhd project are getting delayed because they have to be build with foregin partners

Ideally India 🇮🇳 requires the following : 1. 12 Diesel-Electric SSN's which would operate within 1000 km of Indian Coastline. 2. 15 Nuclear SSN"s with AIP, which can operate > 1000 km of Indian Coastline, and also act with offensive deterrence. 3. 9 Nuclear SSBN's with 💯 % offensive capabilities with unlimited range. N.B. - This is the requirement till 2029, later to which looking at the inevitable future conflicts with our eastern neighbour's our fleet strength of Nuclear SSN and SSBN"s have to be proportionately increased to match our eastern neighbor, to act with credible ⚛ deterrence.

This seems too optimistic...if we go by the plan in the video we will effectively have 36 - 4 Shishumar - 7 Kilo = 25 subs by 2035....even in this the 7 SSBNs will be under Strategic Forces Command and not under Navy....hence we are left with 25 - 7 = 18 Submarines by 2035...and this number will only be achieved if 6 subs in Project 75I goes as per plan and simultaneously we also produce 6 SSNs which seems highly unlikely....hence we are going to struggle in this beyond 2035 as well

It is good anaysis but a very optimistic one. Constructing 17 new subs (6 p8i, 6 SSN and 5 SSBN) is close to impossible, specially in Indian context. In between, there was news that IN will lease 1 Kilo class sub to DRDO for testing its AIP, do you have any update on that...??

My opinion- The assessment might not be fully correct though. Type 209 is 35 yrs old & would likely start retiring within this decade, although Kilo Class might continue. We should plan to retire Type 209 by 2028 so that all 4 retire by 2030. Till then we can work on improving it's weapons package & other small upgrades. Comprehensive upgrade doesn't make sense here. We can comprehensively upgrade 6 Kilo Class Submarines with technologies like Lithium ION Batteries, upgrading Avionics, Indigenising Weapons Package etc. to keep them operational for another 10 yrs while retiring 1 Sub which can be used as a Testbed to test technologies like DRDO AIP & other leading future technologies which we would look to incorporate in our indigenous Submarine (whenever we plan to construct them). At the same time, Kalvari Subs would also start going a refit to get DRDO AIP. Parallely, order for 6 Subs under P75I would also be placed which would likely act as a future replacement for 6 Kilo Submarines in service. Since even if we sign P75I by next year, first submarine would take around 6-7 yrs to get rolled out & another 1 yr for trials. So by 2030 we'll induct first P75I sub & other 5 by 2035. By 2032 start retiring 6 Kilo Class in Batches of 2 each, all retired by 2035. Also, Navy should start planning about an indigenous Submarine from now so that by 2026-27, design gets an approval & by 2028-29, construction starts with first roll out within 7 yrs- by 2036 & induction by 2037. 6 Submarines if possible can be rolled out by 2040 if joint production is undertaken between L1 & L2. Both Public(MDL)/Private(L&T) to closely work with Navy's Submarine Design Center (on lines of Ship Design Center). 6 SSN order can be placed by 2024-25 so that first sub starts rolling out within 8 yrs. Expect induction by 2033-34 & all 6 by 2038-39. Though 3 S5 SSBN orders might get completed by 2032 approx. If we see the timeline of each, none of the projects would fully get completed before 2038 at best & still it would be around 31 Subs unless we plan for 9 indigenous SSK (unlikely since it's our first time) (6 Kalvari+ 6 P75I + 6 Indigenous SSK + 6 Indigenous SSN + 2 Arihant Class SSBN+ 2 S4 Class SSBN + 3 S5 Class SSBN).

Why DRDO did not create an experimental module which could test the AIP? I mean a single pod with just the AIP being tested in the water near a sea coast or just hanging from a ship.

Looking the situation which we have to face in our seas & Indian Ocean by 2040,with 12 SSK with AIP from Pakistan,6 SSK from Bangladesh,4/6 Type39 with AIP from Thailand in Indian Ocean & Bay of Bengal,along with their master PLAN with 6 SSN,12-16 SSK with AIP,4 SSBN & 2 Aircraft Carriers based out of Pakistan,Bangladesh,Sri Lanka,Thailand or Myanmar. In the meantime also intrusions from Indonesian Navy. We need a fleet of 64 Submarines in total: 12 Scorpene Submarine with AIP retrofitted,Lithium Ion Batteries. 12 P76 submarine based on Enlarged Scorpene/Type 216/218/KSS/Amur 1950/Imrpoved Lada with 8-12 VLS cells,AIP retrofitted & Lithium Ion Batteries,all built by private sectors in 2 parallel lines,6 each. 12 SSN(As 195MW reactors are not ready,so buying Rubis Class designs from France,with modifications would be great equipped with 95MW reactors,along with 8-10 VLS tubes retrofitted,Pumpjet Propulsion) When 195MW reactors arrives,then 6000-7000 tonnes SSN with firepower similar to Yasen/Los Angeles/Virginia Class in firepower with 12 VLS tubes & 8 533 mm Torpedo tubes. 6 Rubis Class Designs based SSN 6 Yasen/Barracuda/Similar Class based SSN 6 S4 Class SSBN 6 S5 Class SSBN 16 Midget Submarine of Type206/Amur 550/STM500 Class in size & displacement having a range of 1500-2000km when submerged,equipped with 8 533mm Torpedo tubes for Heavy Torpedoes/SLCM,having Lithium Ion Batteries,they will decrease the workload of normal SSK as they will perform all Coastal operations. They need to spend around 45-48 billion dollars till 2040 for all these,as SSBN funds will come from MOD directly. Along with these to protect Indian Ocean from any Aggression & mantain Dominance we need a fleet by 2040,consisting of: 24 Destroyers similar to Sejong the Great Class Destroyers,not oversized frigates termed as Destroyers. 32 Frigates(12 Light Frigates based on Kamorta Class Corvettes designs with modifications,configurations will be: 76mm Naval gun 16 cells for Barak 8ER 8 cells VLS for 32 VL SRSAM 8 cells VLS for ASW missiles 8 SSM in Cannisters 2 Pantsir/Palma/RIM116 CIWS 2 Triple Light Torpedoe tubes 24 ASUW Corvettes(Merging both NGMV & NGC with adding ASW capabilities)+24 ASW Corvettes 16 FAC vessels with 8/12 SSM,76mm Naval gun,1 CIWS,Torpedo tubes/Mine Rails 24 Armed OPV with 12/16 SR NASM/KH35/NSM,2 RIM116/SEARAM/Pantsir CIWS & Mine Rails/Torpedo tubes 32 Fast Patrol Crafts of 300-400 tonnes similar to Car Nicobar Class armed with 8 SR NASM,57mm Naval guns,SHORAD & 2 RWS 4 Aircraft Carriers(2 STOBAR & 2 CATOBAR of 48000-52000 tonnes with Catapults & Conventional propulsion) 4 Helicopter Carriers + 6 Makassar Class LPD 16 Japanese style Minesweepers & Auxiliaries For Aviation: 48 Rafale M/FA 18 Super Hornet 80 TEDBF if Ready 36 F35B fighters 48 MH60R ASW +48 IMRH ASW +36 IMRH SAR 72 ALH Dhruv MK3 Naval +48 LUH Naval 18 AW101 CROWSNEST AEW +6 E2D Hawkeye 24 S70 Ohtonik/Dassault Neuron/Ghatak 18 MQ9 Reapers/Mohave+ 24 IAI Eitan UCAV STOL 48 IMRH Armed/Ka52K for Helicopter Carriers 24 LR Bombers Leased

Bring the " latest " gen stealth submarines 2 from Russia and 2 from US...and obtain respective licences and blue prints for production of other such subs in India. L&T and TATA can build quality vessels in collaboration with Naval Engineers. Also buy the Nimitz from USA ..immediately...while indigenous builds continue. India needs to give a massive technological boost on all fronts of defence ..to ensure being at the forefront in upcoming years amidst prevailing threat scenarios. Sell the aging crafts to countries who are willing to buy ...to cover partial costs. Also consider the use of REMOTE UNMANNED RADAR EVADING SUBMARINES .

It's misleading to say that India will have 36 submarines by 2035. The best case scenario is that by 2035, IN will have 12 SSK , 7 SSBN and 3 SSN. That's only 15 Submarines actually for any operational deployments. The SSBNs are for deterrence having different role. And 15 is the number we hold today. Meanwhile Pakistan by 2028 will have 11 SSK.

@@aryanyadav3690 The last date to reply for P75I is around in December. Considering then in another 6 months we decide the winner and then in 6 more month we sign the deal. Then from ordering long lead items to cutting of steel is another 12-18 months. Then another 30-36 months for construction. Then another 12 months minimum for sea trials. That's when you get the 1st P75I in service. My timelines are what you call optimistic. Add 2-3 years more for a realistic one.

Why can't we Procure 3 Additional Scopene Class Subs... MDL already finished the last Subs.

We will fail anything to get commission s ??

We Know P-75I Diesel Electric Submarines will take many Decades to get operational but why we are inducting SSBN at very slow pace. Till now only one Arihant SSBN is operational. We are Manufacturing SSBN so why it is taking too much time for induction. S5 SSBN which will be bigger can take time but why S3, S4 and S4* is taking too much time. This shows Indian Navy is not serious about Countering China in Naval Power.

At least close to 50 subs will be good not better but if we can achieve that will be good.
