In this video I’m burning the old stump, to free up the space for a new tree.

For anyone needing to do this; get a large metal garbage can, drill out large ventilation holes around the top, cut out the bottom of the can, so now you have a semi-conical tube with the ventilation holes being at the new bottom. Place the can over the largest portion of the stump you want to remove and begin filling up the can with sticks, branches and other materials to be burned and start your fire from the bottom of the contained materials through one of the ventilation holes. Once started, the contained bonfire will draw air in from the holes at the bottom of the can and the fire will eat through the stump rapidly. There’s videos on KZread that show this process better than I’ve described it.

I used the same method in the video, no barrel. Took me two days to burn out the stump. The problem with not using a barrel, is a lot of the heat from the fire is not actual focused on the stump, it just goes into the atmosphere. I had to use nearly a whole other tree to burn out one stump😂 it was fun to watch though

Where I live I can’t burn on my lawn by law. It’s hard to get rid of unwanted vegetation. Like your video.

What an effort! I have a big stump that is only just starting to break down after 10 years, so you definitely saved a few years.

Thanks for watching Doug! Having a limited space and time to grow I’m happy that I did it. Can’t wait to plant a Cheena Jackfruit in that spot next winter. Happy growing!

I like the idea of using charcoal and wood together. Also Alex's comment below is the right way to do it.

Good job! Thanks for sharing! I’ve seen other videos where guys put a barrel around the stump. Seems to do a good job of making the heat more intense and accelerating the process.

Nice video. If you weren't in a hurry that would make a perfect fire pit site to sit around with drinks in the evening. Eventually the stump would be gone and could move on to another stump if you had one.

Why not just use the old stump as a fire-pit/barbeque grill? You could do most of your cooking there for several months and kill two birds with one stone!

Just removed three stumps that are over ten years old. Two small ones popped out, no problem at all. The biggest one took three days of digging.

My Bro !!! you are going to think that I am pulling your leg when I tell you this little secret but , you go to the grocery store & buy a quart of buttermilk & pour it all over the exposed cut on the stump & just sit back & wait !!! in no time at all you will see the wood start to break down & rot away as the months & years go by !!! & that is the truth !!!

This is actually good science because adding nitrogen / fertiliser will do the same. Anything that encourages composting will encourage the wood to break down.

I use a burn barrel, diesel fuel, and lots of old wood on my stumps. A chain saw looks helpful.

With you putting raised bed on top of that stump burning it was useless west of time and effort. Just my opinion.

Thanks for watching! Raised bed is a temporary thing. I’m actually going to be planting a new tree in that spot. Burning through the entire stump was necessary to ensure that the new tree’s roots will not be blocked by the old stump. Also, I love burning things too 😀
