As the kiwis rounded the line and passed the americans still going the other way, the Kiwis stood and applauded the americans who just looked at them and didn’t return the respect they were due. Says it all doesn’t it. And from an Aussie skipper too, poor show Jimmy, they belted you fair and square, you should have been respectful to them

    Hmmm. Unless you have some kind of magic camera, I'm not sure you can fairly say the Oracle team didn't return respect. The camera is on the Kiwis for that part, the Oracle guys might be doing a brief haka for all we know. Kiwi here, and yes, Spithill's an asshat, but he knew when he was beaten and was unusually respectful in his praise of the kiwis in post match interviews.

    In 1985, Dr. Doug Mclean, a Boeing PhD Aerodynamicist gave a Noon Time Technical Lecture entitled “Off the Wall Hydrodynamics”. He had pictures of wingfoilers like this nearly 35 years ago. He also had pictures of radio controlled tethered competition sailplanes acting like a kite towing these hydrofoil riders. He said theoretically, they could do more than seven times windspeed because the sailplanes could sweep thru seven times the area of a wing fixed to the hull. Imagine going 70 mph in a 10 mph breeze!

  • @AWildBard

    @AWildBard

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@00BillyTorontoBill They don't charge batteries with grinders. They pressurize hydraulic systems that are used for sail trims, rudder control, and with foiling boats, the hydraulics are used to control the foils. I think they decided to use these systems partly to stay in line with traditional sailing that doesn't rely on motors or engines. They probably do have some batteries for electrical systems they use like computers for navigation, weather and sail trim information, and radio communications. But even if they had batteries to control the sailing, the batteries would probably be too heavy anyway. It seems like the power use would be pretty high, but I'm not 100% sure about that.

    USA missed the input from Coutts and we had the majic of Glen Ashby. Another interesting observation was the constant trimming of the US mainwing compared to NZ. I prefer, like Ashby, to allow the helmsman to steer to the wind instead of the main trimmer fiddling. NZ sandbagged a bit to in that race. The boat was much quicker upwind and down. Also there was something major wrong with the US onboard data management. The starts were second rate. Oh and you can't go past the cycling. That was way more efficient. Well done NZ. Bring on Auckland!!

    If you are watching this years races, All you need to really look at is the "Average VMG" which is the speed to the finish line if it was a straight line. The boats have to "Tack" which means they have to turn (to stay within the course), the way the wind is, they can't just go straight so they have to use the wind.

    Glenn Ashby, here controlling the rig of the NZ boat, is a formidable sailor. Many years ago he was hired by team Oracle to teach the Americans how to sail high-performance catamarans as the America's cup was changing to catamarans. They came to McCrae YC on Port Philip Bay, around 70 km from Melbourne, and sailed A-Class cats - my former club and my class. I have a picture somewhere of Glenn accepting a drink from the America's cup from Larry Ellison, Mr Oracle. Rumours spread spread among the old guys about the new, young A-Class genious when Glenn was 17 or 18, around 1995. Since then, he's won 17 or 18 world championships in A-Class and other catamaran classes. The thing about A-Class is that it's an open design. Maximum length, maximum beam and maximum sail area are defined. A minimum weight limit came in later because European production boats were heavy rubbish and the Europeans bleated about unfair advantage, etc. Yeah. Right. The unfair advantage was that Australian home builders using marine ply and epoxy resin could build better boats than factories in Europe using the latest foam sandwich/carbon composite mixtures. OK. Rant over. So, within that, you can do what you like. A-Class sailors didn't just get to control their rigs, we participated in their design. We knew what they could do. Glenn has been doing this for over 25 years. It gives him an advantage, This short video gives an idea tinyurl.com/yxvujuuc. I particularly like this one because the last photo has my old mate "Storm" who I've known for around 40 years. tinyurl.com/y6j54lr6 He mentions some of my oldest friends that I've known since the 1970s. Greg Goodall is mentioned. I remember encountering him on the ski slopes in Thredbo many years ago. He had a baby in a chest-pac. I was talking to his wife a few months ago and she said that the baby is now in his thirties. Greg made my sails and he employed a young Glenn Ashby all those years ago.

    For me, I will always remember the morning when Australia beat America, and PM Bob Hawke reaction... it was golden! Now the America's Cup reminds me of watching the Little's America's Cup off Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron. Port Philip Bay, and Miss Nylex. Somehow now the America's cup is now just another boat race, an expensive one at that. Up to 1982, beating America in the America's cup was like landing on the Moon. Now it is a bit ho hum...

  • @DoubleMonoLR

    The pedalling (& hand cranking on the other boat) builds hydraulic pressure, the pressure is in turn used to adjust the sails, foils etc. To lift, it's just using hydrofoils - which is basically the same as an aeroplane wing, but under water.
