In this video I compare the 35mm, 85mm and 135mm prime lenses to see which is the best prime lens for wedding portrait photography.
I love each of these prime lenses for different reasons as they each give a different look but I would really like to know which is your favourite so please let me know in the comments!
All the photographs in the is video were taken on my Sony A9 camera in natural light. The prime lenses I used were the Sony FE 35mm 1.8, Sony FE 85mm 1.8 and the Sigma 135mm 1.8.
After being inspired by awesome wedding photographer Maciej Magic Suwalowsk I also used the Samyang 24mm f3.5 tilt shift lens. You can follow Maciej on his KZread channel here: / magicweddingphotographer

Seem so far from you but I do like your explanation and how to use different tape of lenses that is I looking for, I got 3 lenses 28-75mm f2.8, 85mm f1.8, and my new lens Viltrox 16mm f1.8, now I’m looking new lens sigma 105mm f1.4 but I can’t get it at my place. I do love shooting but my problem is I don't know how to edit. Thanks for sharing and your English very clearly how me secondary English listens easily. I'm happy sub- and follow you.

I prefer longer focal lengths, shooting most of my portraits with an RF 85mm1.2 or the 70-200mm. I have a plethora of other lenses but waiting for Canon to release both a 35mm1.2 and the 135mm. I am really considering the 35mm even though it is outside of my comfort zone. Btw, my favorite of your images was the close up with the 35mm. Interesting.

I also have the Sigma 135 Art (in EF mount adapted on my Canon R6), yes it's huge, but it's also my go-to lens for portraits, both indoor and outdoor; I ditch the 135 for the 50 f1.4 (also the Sigma Art in EF mount) only indoor if the space is tight and/or the place is super dark and I can't supplement light. Otherwise size and weight penalty are the price to pay for that beautiful 135, so I've to say that it's the lens I would suggest to any portrait and/or wedding photographer. I would change it only for the "bokeh-master" Sigma 105 f1.4 but that thing cost too much for my pockets right now...but the moment I'll have the possibility, I MUST OWN IT 😀

35 is my favourite (as you don't have a 50) - way more context. Completely blurred out backgrounds aren't particularly interesting (after you've seen so many of them.) So 85/135 have their place but are one trick ponies for me.

I'm with you Albert! I have just got so used to the 35mm too as I use it for 70% of everything I ever do, I don't feel as comfortable with the 135mm, which plays in to my choice of the 35mm being the best. I agree with you, the 135mm really requires the foreground and background to be interesting to give more interest

school boy error with the camera straps. I did that other day at a wedding and had to go sprinting back to my car. Cannot afford to drop a 4k camera on the floor with a 3k lens Hahahaha. Neil please respond as I am looking at the 135mm as I have the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm lens. I was at a wedding the other day and I really needed that reach of the 135mm. How is it with weight? I generally stick with the 85mm on a wedding day and then the 35mm comes out afterwards. I have recently got the f2 Canon 28-70mm which is amazing, however I love the prime lenses. Please let me know with 135mm as I will just buy it as some weddings I have found certain situations often require that additional reach. Thanks for doing these videos and just as some feedback if reading this, I have met a few photographers in the Wirral and Bamber bridge who have mentioned you and also met one of your clients over at Sparth House on one of my weddings towards the end of August who spoke highly of you that you did at Last drop. Hi Jon! I know, I hated not having my camera strap, I don't know how I forgot to pack it - I was convinced I would end up dropping mt camera - it has happened before! Haha I agree, the 135mm, although not a lens I use a lot, is pretty invaluable to have in your bag because it does come in handy on a wedding day where you need extra reach. The Sigma is heavy - Sony do a 135mm which is a bit lighter but also much more expensive. That's lovely to hear too, thank you. I don't believe I've worked at Last Drop though?? I will take the kind words though! 😂 thanks again

My wedding go to is the 70-200 2.8. You get that reach without the heft. The new RF version is killer. I am guessing the new 135mm release could be insanely expensive but it will be interesting to see how good it is.

@@NeilRedfern yeah, it's a banger. I shoot 1.2 with it all day - with the A9 the autofocus is still amazingly accurate. Flare is good in the right light (but no 50L)

Argh, you're making me very tempted mate....! 😂 If you can get any flare from it at all that would be a bonus as I find Sony lenses in general don't give you anything. I would love 1.2 for portraits.....

I would have been more Impressed if you started the Video being on the right location on hand, and Swapping Lenses in the Field, did not impress me either.. As a Pro Photographer of many years, I never swapped lenses on-location, always had them attached to Bodies of their own - Multiple Lenses, Multiple Bodies! However, everyone has an opinion about Professionalism. I know it's off the actual Topic about Favorite Lens, and mine would be 24 - 35 - 58 - 105mm (full frame) Vintage Lenses..

It makes the video more human and engaging, in my opinion. He could quite easily have cut to the bit where he was at the field and done a studio intro - but on reflection, I much prefer this. And I know that Neil rocks a number of bodies to a wedding (2xA9, same as me), but just going out on a little fun shoot there's not a great deal of need for that. At a wedding, you're probably still going to need to swap your lenses out once or twice though, perhaps for a couple of macro shots - or a wide shot. I have a third body, but to be honest id rather just keep things simple and stick with 2 SD cards and use two bodies. (I prefer the 85mm but do like the 35mm shots... )
