It used to be that people used to make fun of gamers, treating us as though we were man-childs obsessed with toys and whatnot. Then, once they realized just how profitable gaming was, those same people wormed their way into the things we loved and are now, not only continuing to insult and mock us, they're now trying to tell us how we're suppose to enjoy the hobby we grew up loving and changing it one game at a time. It's just like what happened with comics.

But what I prefer to see overall are well-written character-driven stories, attractive graphics and top-notch playability. I can't stand tokenism and the endless race and gender swapping with well-established characters. It's pathetic and we're not asking for it. Don't sweat the race-baiters. Vote with your wallets.

I'm white(from a third world country never represented in any game 😂) but I never payed attention to character colours or origins only if it was related to the story, as far as I remember there where always all races in games, not all of them but most of them except those that where geographically or historically focused, where it definitely doesn't make any sense to have a black character or npc with the vikings or a white character between the feudal Japan etc. This new narrative is not about races that much, it is about pronouns😂

Games were already diverse enough. Gears of war had Cole who is a lot of people's favorite character as well as mine and I'm white. We had plenty of bad ass games with a main character who was a woman hell we even had prototype 2 and just so many other games.

I am a 40 year old black Puerto Rican and I have been playing since my childhood. Never in my life have I thought "hey, why aren't there black or Latino characters in my games?" That was never the reason I started playing or a necessity for me. I could see Ryu from SF and say "That's me!" But we are in a society that since they have social media plataforms they have the need for attention and recognition...

He became interested in Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), Environmental and Social Governance (ESG), and Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI). The Human Rights Campaign Foundation (HRCF) which was formerly focused on pushing Transgender Ideology was tasked with examining corporations and assigning them a Corporate Equality Index (CEI). The more points you can get the more likelihood that Larry Fink will buy your stock for his fund. This has gone on for a few years and this is why Disney have put a gay boy in _Strange World_ as well as other unpopular decisions because they were more motivated to get investment from Fink than to maintain the quality of their trusted family safe brand which had been built up over 100 years. This has now been destroyed and as of this morning Nelson Peltz failed to kick out Bob Iger CEO of Disney in order to stop them destroying the brand with LGBTQ+ messaging targeted at impressionable children who shouldn't be thinking about sex at their age. The DIS Stock crashed as a result. Interestingly, Fink recently said that they had lost a lot of money on ESG and DEI through this CEI index pursuit. What a surprise that going woke makes you go broke as it isn't popular with people! He went from 100% CEI driven investments to 8% so we will see less incentive to push woke messaging in future projects, but for those already in the works it is too late as they are caught in multi year productions. I will be curious if _INSIDE OUT 2_ has a Lesbian relationship between children as hinted at in the trailer. If Disney don't want to lose money they will fix this so it isn't the case before the film comes out, but given that the final trailer is ambigious and all rainbow colours they may get boycotted even if the movie isn't woke, simply because they failed to communicate what it was clearly. It seems _Deadpool 3_ had studio interference with Disney wanting Brie Larson and Tatiana Maslany in it and Ryan Reynolds had enough power to stop this being in the final cut although I think their scenes got filmed, so that will probably be irreverant anti-woke fun. I reserve judgement on _The Acolyte_ unlike some commentators who have trashed the first trailer as I think it is premature to pass judgement on something until you have seen at least the first episode of a series. _Dune_ had a good enough trailer, but was an utterly boring mumble fest with only one character I care about. Honestly, _Madame Web_ was more entertaining, and didn't overstay its welcome.

There was a time when people fell in love with characters. Well written characters, who had depth and feeling to them. Didn't matter to me (white man) that Ripley was female. Didn't matter to me that Blade was black, buff (I'm not! Far from it), and a Vampire. I could empathise and sympathise with well written characters. Aladdin, Mulan, Joan of Arc. Didn't matter what race or species (Love Spock!) or sex the character was. Same for games. Most normal people fall in love with brilliantly executed and written characters, regardless of the superficial stuff. Only those whose minds are limited, and who are immured in racism and sexism cannot. So the majority of us will simply reject their nonsense and not pay for it. Let's just pay for and enjoy fun games. These companies will either wake up or disappear. I really no longer care which they choose.

To this day Aliens is my favorite movie, i know basically all lines from the movie after watching it many 100s times on VHS and other media after. Sigourney Weaver and Lance Henriksen were amazing actors, so was Wesley Snipes aka Daywalker who also had a great performance in Demolition Man. Good acting and script outweigh current green-screen noobs with forced in diversity for bad reasons insanely.

​@@moonashaIt's not gone. It's just moved on to the indie scene. Lot's of devs from our old favorite teams left to go make and work at their own smaller studios. Takes a little digging, but they are still there. Back in our day, we really didn't need to research a game much to tell if it was going to be for us or not. Nowadays, we have to vet every company, developer, and publisher involved to make sure it's going to be a "fun game." Even watching gameplay isn't quite enough anymore. Now, though, there are plenty of independent dev teams that literally just focus on making good games. Sure they are smaller scale, but they deserve our dollars far more than the soulless husks that control the AAA scene today.

I have been heavily involved with computers since the beginning of the "Home PC" era... Since the Atari and the earliest 8 bit games. I was one of those nerdy geeks that watched Star Trek, played D&D, read Comic books, and of course, played a LOT of video games over the years. While I will admit that there were always an "over the top" person or two who were obsessive compulsive and off putting within almost ANY group or interest, 95% of the fans in each of those hobbies were extremely accepting and welcoming to ANYONE who showed ANY interest in the same hobbies. I had/have many good friends of all types, colors, abilities, and genders, and had great amounts of fun together.... I never saw ANY harassment in regards to color, gender, race, or disability.... Back then we were all grateful and excited to share our love for whichever hobby was involved. As a group, geeks and nerds were vilified, shunned and bullied by the mainstream and we pretty much ignored them and just built cool stuff for ourselves... Over the past twenty years, people like me watched a shift in the culture where geeks, nerds, and gamers had become more "acceptable" and more people started entering our hobbies to get involved with the cool toys we had built... and we welcomed them, even the former bullies, with open arms... and then the bullies started to make complaints, then demands that whichever hobby they got involved with had to change to fit their viewpoints and narratives... they invaded and colonized EVERYTHING we did and tried to make EVERYBODY follow their rules and used the same shaming and bullying tactics as before to wrench our "toys and joys" away from us and destroy them like a jealous and bratty child. By the time that most people realized the destruction that was occurring and tried to limit the damage, it was too late and the rapacious horde was already inside the supposed "Gates"... Geeks and Nerds were always welcoming, to the point that we let these bad actors in with the hope of friendship in our common interests... The bullies regular external attacks were being ignored and they found a new tactic, that quickly became apparent, that there was no real interest in our hobbies, it was merely another way to get under our skin and destroy the very things we loved from the inside. The various fandoms were slowly divided into factions and fomenting internal strife... this is the "endgame" for the liars, colonizers, bullies, and cheaters... they have thoroughly infiltrated every corner with their trash and the industry that nerds and geeks painstakingly built over decades is collapsing under the weight of their hatred for anything that we built... Evil cannot create, they can only corrupt that which the good have made... that sums up the anger and the backlash against these turds... We suffered decades of bullying and misery and clung to our hobbies, but now those bullies are destroying everything while lying and claiming that THEY are the victims when the geeks and gamers and nerds complain about their wanton destruction. Absolute turds.

If you’re continually supporting bad games and bad developers you’re the problem. Stop giving them money and they will be forced to adapt

I’m 45+ and black. Played video games ever since the early 80s. Every black kid I knew played video games as well. My point is that there’s always been diversity with video game players. One thing I can tell you is that gamers do not like to be told what to think. The more you try to do this, the more chance you have of losing ALL you client base. Probably NOT a good idea to alienate the people you want to buy your games. My opinion is that SBI got a bit too full of themselves, and instead of succeeding in removing people they don't like, they brought attention to something that not a lot of people knew about and CAUSED the bear trap they are now in. I had no clue who ANY of these people were until today. As a result, I am NOW paying attention. What I am seeing is a group of people cut from the same cloth as Trudeau. In fact SBI sounds like something we'd find the Trudeau Foundation is invested in. This gaslighting, calling people out for being what you ACTUALLY are, is a really BAD tactic in an era where time and a wifi reveal all. Lesson: Don't throw stones in a house of glass.

This term is used as a one size fits all for political opponents and it makes me sick. The curated list could have been lifted directly from their CV. What kind of person or company is terrified of people seeing where they worked, and what they accomplished? Drug dealers, s3x traffikers and... just people who do BAD THINGS.

Been gaming since the early 90's and throughout my childhood all the way to adulthood I never thought twice about the color of a character's skin, and I'm black. This hyper fixation on it right now makes zero sense to me. I don't want nor need to be represented everywhere, especially in video games.

They arent doing it to please black people, they are doing it to justify meddling with every aspect of the entertainment industry and our lives in general. It is that simple..The power is always in the hands of the customer base. They can go as woke as they like, but they can never force the customer base to purchase and support their products..

The assertion that it was white and asian males mainly playing games in the beginning is painfully wrong. Videogames crossed all racial barriers from their inception, they were just as huge in black and hispanic neighborhoods. And I'm talking from at least the original NES era.

We are certainly not getting more unique experiences these days. That's exactly the opposite of what we've been getting. We've been getting the same grey blob in everything.

@@soulbakin As an online gamer there are plenty of people I know only as a tag or an avatar. I do not know their real-life gender, race or political inclination but those are utterly irrelevant in the context anyway.

The very same people who mocked gamers and video games before the 2010's made a U-turn when they realized it was a big thing. Now they made their way to the top of the industry and are telling people how they should enjoy video games. They don't really care about games themselves but about the power they have acquired. It's pretty telling that most of those individuals display open contempt for gamers. It was already the case with Sarkeesian. That being said, I'm pretty sure this trend will die out, as both AAA and indie studios fell apart because their games are a failure.

Love that you shine a light on this issue. Keep em coming. More people need to learn about this issue in the gaming industry!

We live in a time where people make entire careers out of their teenage traumas and just bounce from grift to grift. The con artist hasn't gone away, it's just evolved. And lost the "artist" part.

It's not racism if they're white and it's not sexism if they're male. And then you have companies that brag about having 100% non-white employees (Black Girl Gamers) publicly on their website saying that it makes them diverse. Diverse means variety - not 100% your race/gender. Are we living in reality? Does language exist and are words defined? The nanosecond a company would brag publicly about having 100% white employees, it would be dissolved and the leadership would be investigated for ties to the Klan. This experiment of hyperfocus on immutable characteristics like race and gender as the defining factors in our identity needs to come to an end. Let's go back to trying to avoid judging people by their sex or skin, instead of only looking at their sex and skin; telling stories that respect source material and draw from diverse sources instead of shoehorning synthetic representation into established worlds; and focusing on gameplay and story instead of manipulating content and artistic vision to push specific political agendas.

Political power is far more valuable than money. It not only makes you money, but it makes sure no one is able to take it away from you. If you have powerful friends, no one will mess with you. As someone who uses Linux, I really wish every triple a developer would not be so easily convinced that the Microsoft proprietary kernel is the single piece of paid software in every computer in the world is required to have to touch their software. Microsoft Windows will soon be the only Monopoly for your secretive kernel to talk to the secretive client that has more access to your computer then you do to play a game that is also kept secret so they can delete it when it's milked. Literally don’t care who,what gender or color the characters are in a game if it’s a well written story, good gameplay and not riddled with micro transactions if it’s a single player game. Studios just need to go back to making a good game and it will sell.

Gender and colour may have an impact on the setting. A black person in Skyrim is a Redguard, not a local Nord. As such that person is a visitor, an immigrant or from an immigrant family. There are people from all the races and nations represented in the game, but they all make sense where they are. A funny thing is that the Stormcloak rebellions main enemy are the Thalmor, a high elf supremacist group. Still, they generally dislike the darkelfs more. Living as refugees for 200 years without properly rebuilding their lives will do that. Successful darkelves are actually respected even in the city Windhelm that is the Stormcloak's headquarter. Yes, some darkelfs are definitely fishing for victim points highlighted with one of them being sick and tired of his brothers' constant complaints of injustices essentially suggesting that he should get a job to earn respect.

100% great opening. People need to talk about this more. When I was in middle and high school at the end of the 90s I would not tell women that I was a gamer because THEY SHAT ALL OVER GAMERS. They thought that games were nerdy, and gamers were gross. ALL of them did. No one ever kept them out, they HATED gaming.

When I was growing up in the 80s most of the girls I knew had a Game & Watch. I had two nieces and a nephew who used to fight over Gameboy Tetris. My ex-wife was a Lemmings fanatic and a Ms Pacman and Toobin' ace. My first regular WoW raid guild leader was a female. My raiding partner of 4 years was also. My current wife has absolutely no background in gaming at all, she sucks at them. It's a sore point tbh, but you can't have everything. I have never assumed my experiences were definitive. But neither are yours.

It’s actually annoying, I Love a well written female character and diverse character in general, but when the sole purpose of them being female or diverse is for political value then they become a poorly written character. Stellar blades eve might be a terrible character but I can’t say till I’ve played the game. There’s so many examples of well written female characters but for some reason recently they have the characters verbally emphasising how great they are because they’re a woman. Angelina Jolie’s maleficent was amazing, moana was amazing, catniss Everdeen was amazing.

I am a woman over 40. Been a gamer since the 80's. So the culture really started in the 80's and 90's. Political or Social justice bullshit has really only been pushed into gaming in the last decade. Btw, I have told my daughters who are gamers to not have feminine user names because that makes them a target some toxic male gamers. Not all male gamers are toxic, but we still teach about protecting themselves online.

they literally said they don't want our money. then they started complaining when we decided to not buy their games and instead spend our money on more important things. they forgot that the most important thing to not ever do is pi*s off the majority of the customer base they rely on for a income. they are now living in the consequences of their own actions. nobody is forcing us to buy their games and they are finally learning that.

My Czech wife is playing Diablo 4 beside me, her Arab husband... Never once has either of us felt 'not included' or 'shunned' from any video game. We have been playing vids since the 90s.

Love the content, I’ve heard bits and pieces of this whole controversy but I like how you gathered the entirety of the story so far with that beginning context. Keep up the good work

Being a gamer/nerd minority was hell back in the days, throw in being a girl, it is social death as a young teen. I had to hide I loved gaming/anime among my peers or get bullied hard. It was not 'cool' to like any of that stuff. What is weird is the second I went to an all white school (nearly 98% was white) I was warned how disliked I would be. And I will never say people don't have issues or people as young as that can alienate you, but man I felt for the first time I was accepted for my hobbies and by extension I was accepted, and I really opened up and being proud being a minority girl who plays games. My white male/female peers made me feel accepted in a crucial point in my life. I found my tribe with people who shared my hobby not my skin color, and through that I have seen the growth of many who grew up like me as well. It is crazy that these people didn't grow up with that, because the people who gatekept us being gamers were those who were our race and didn't understand gaming. Also the idea of guys being into gaming was hell for them too I suppose (I can only speak on my exp I don't know what it is to be a young guy) but I have African American peers who say that it was not seen as tough to be a nerd, hence weak=ripe for bullying and being accused of not 'man' enough. Let alone the stereotypes of being a virgin gamer, like it was just never good to game no matter who you were, even white/Asian men, it just was they still did it despite the negative look. tl:dr I love that gaming is being more accepted by the general population, it was not a problem that gamers gatekept it was an issue with people who didn't like or care about gaming.

They did not just call for the curation to be harassed and removed, but the creator to be harassed and his steam account to be deleted They say they aren't the enemy. What else do you call people when they declare war on you? They insult and attack people for their gender or skin color. Call for them to be fired or not hired. They talk about purging those who do not agree with their every thought. So they seem to consider us the enemy.

There never was a problem. I been around since the early days of gaming like the `90s. Whites and blacks, etc got on better than ever before, But the politicians and certain agencies decided to create problems and blew it all out of proportion. They aimed at the really young, easily tricked ones who don't remeber the `90s, etc at all. Gaming got the brunt of it. I shook my head as I saw it get worse and and worse. even spoke out about it. Even when they found out I was black and didn't agree, they just dismissed me as an `aberration`. I will never be a part of this woke crap, it's all but ruined the good times of gaming.

I still remember playing GTA: San Andread when i was young and CJ was one of my favourite character even though he was black and i am white. Yet, i thought CJ was cool character. Same thing with Barret Wallace, who is one of my favourite characters in Final Fantasy 7

Video games can not have a "diversity problem" per se. There is no diverity problem. There are scenarios where it makes sense to have ONLY certain types of characters. Sometimes only white people, sometimes only white males, sometimes only blacks, asians or all of them. It depends on the genre and the style of writing, the kind of culture the game is based on. There is no space for black people in " the witcher 3 " since it is based on old polish folklore, written in times where there were only white people in poland. So this style is supposed to be continued. There is a TON of space for black people in a game which will come out from an african developer one day and will deal with african folklore. So simple. No one NEEDS diversity. You can have it in GTA. Or you can NOT have it like in LOTR.

​@priestofthighs3013 because it was a fictional story taking place during a historical era. High fantasy always has the inclusion problem due to be completely fictional without historical timelines. Look at lotr, no one complained because it's completely fictional. Now look at harry potter, takes place in the 90s and there were only about 7 or 8 minorities total in 7 books (besides other species)

As an avid, almost daily gamer since 1986 I have noticed the recent slip in quality of the big titles recently and the force fed woke I’ve had to roll my eyes at in basically every game I like in the past 10 years for sure. Sweet baby’s arrival in all the giant punishers is no coincidce I’m sure. And now that I think of it gamer gate was exactly 10 years ago. Good job not hiding from it. Many gamers will have your back

Just more people thinking their jobs don't require consumer money to continue to exist. Skipping Xbox/Microsoft entirely seems sensible, they've told us repeatedly they don't want gamers as customers.

they bake addiction mechanics right into their platform, kids are logging on to earn pennies, even on days they don't want to play, bc of that Xbox "rewards quests" with objectives such as play 4/7 days this week. It's truly disgusting. The most fQuery is centered around, Online multiplayer, consoles, and Children. Parents need to do better, addiction mechanics built into the console itself is so awful, but it's completely normalized. The games used to be addicting enough, we don't need retention loops making it worse, causing kids to do something they don't even want to do, encouraging them to waste their time further than they would organically. I consider it demonic what they are doing.

At the end of the day, we gamers hold all the power to make or break a game! If the cultists want to force woke bs into games, we just wont buy those games. We will win by doing nothing!

It took a while to hit Ignore on every Ubisoft game I don't already own on Steam but now I have a warm and fuzzy feeling all over! Thank you for covering this mess!!! Someone forgot to tell her that you can't talk to people who don't agree with you when you are censoring their speech.

Also see the entire character of Sarah Morgan in Starfield. In a Bethesda game no one expects well written characters, but she is written in a way that feels like 7 different groups had a had in her dialog and none of them talked.

As a black guy in my 40s, I have to point out that in fact, there were a LOT of black people playing video games before the 2000s. The idea that only White and Asian people were into them before then is a misconception that I wish would just go away. We were always there. We just weren't the demographic that was catered to. That being said, yeah... the so called identity politics that I see with games these days has gotten out of hand. It's BS controversy being thrown about by both sides of the argument for their own agenda, all while people who actually care about video games just want to, you know, play their games in peace.

It really does feed the narrative to say black people weren’t playing video games in the 80’s and 90’s. I don’t recall any games proudly listing on their cartridge packaging “only suitable for white males”. These people who paint a false narrative to solve a problem that was never really there in the first place.

When they started making character creators, they included different skin tones but could only make faces that could be Caucasian or African. So Asians kinda got left out there for a while too. Diversity and representation is just an excuse to shoehorn in political talking points that fit their ideology.

It's not. The boys (amaxon prime) actually genderswapped a character, but they did that because it fit the narrative better. they wanted the perfect nightmare for insecure homelander so a strong woman would fit better than a man. It can work, as long as it isn't forced.😊

What happened was that it got popular. Not just popular, it become the MOST popular entertainment medium, beating out movies, radio, literature and comics, it exploded into major, mainstream industry that was worth billions and had millions of eyes on it. When something like that happens, it gets attention, because it has that much attention on it. The controversy isn't coming from inside this industry, not at its roots, it's coming from outside, people trying to force their way in, trying to reach the maximum number of people by using the medium that's overtaken all the others so that what they want to have heard and seen will be seen and heard by the most possible people. They make up issues and controversies that weren't there, or were easily debunked years ago before the industry had its big boom. They want to change the history to gain ground on it, make claims that things were always this way, that problems had always existed, that even people that were never interested in it before were always there from the start. It's been an ongoing battle for years, they don't want to lose this ground. They took over so many other industries and now they have this one that they didn't pay enough attention to, dismissed as children's entertainment that wouldn't gain the popularity and mainstream appeal that it has. They were wrong and now they're aggressively trying to make up for that oversight. That's all what this is, it's just people that were late to the show wanting to get their claws into it. Our job is to push them back, keep them out, this industry has never needed their input, their ideologies or their influence, and instances where they've gotten in have only been bad for it. We've had major steps BACK as opposed to forward and we had our hands full enough with corporate greed diminishing the quality of the end product to have to worry about it being a major culture war because some hivemind didn't take it seriously enough over twenty years ago.

The mainstream headlines defending sweet baby are totally missing the point. You can't force diversity. The main reason this is a problem is because for some very stupid reasons funding is now contingent on meeting arbitrary diversity goals. This company behave like assholes, prejudice is bad in any direction and sweet baby are clearly deeply prejudiced. I hope these racists never get any more work.

This channel always reminds me why avoiding social media was a good idea. People have way too much time on their hands. Like a game? Play it. Don't like a game? don't play it. Its quite a simple metric when you vote with your wallet.

Triple-A Studios: "Oh crap, hundreds of thousands of our potential customers are boycotting things they don't approve of, what should we do with this? Should we lay low?" Their marketing teams: "No! Let us say proclaim our support of the exact things they don't like!" Triple-A studios: "Brilliant idea!"

As a Hispanic lady gamer, I could not care less about seeing more diversity in my games, I'm playing fictional characters doing wildly fictional things. Stop trying to be Disney and making things lame.

I for one welcome our Eastern developers overlords who just wanna provide good games and don't bother with Western politics

The problem for me isn't so much diversity, it's flat or stock characters whose entire identity is defined by their race. Write great complex characters who just so happen to be of a certain age, or gender, or gender identity, or race, or species. Those attributes shouldn't define the character, the character should define them! Tell us what it means to be like them, what it is like for them, how we can sympathize and relate with them.
