351W Stroker - Recommended Parts

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this video, we review all the parts we have used in our 351W Stroker build. You are going to find out all the back history on the car, the choice of components, the good the bad and the just plain ugly.
We start from the bottom and work our way up, discussing the initial machine shop work, what they did, and how we received the engine block when they were finished.
We will tell you the reasons we wanted a high capacity oil pan and a high volume oil pan. Explain the primary benefits of the lubrication system. Even the name "lubrication system" suggests friction reduction, but the truth is, oil is the media that removes heat from the bearings and other hot components.
We spend some time talking about the differences between a stock engine and a stroker. Explain why the pistons of a stroker kit are shorter than stock pistons and why you may have to have your engine block cylinders clearance for the larger diameter of a stroker crankshaft.
Do you have questions about cylinder heads? Rocker arms, lifters, camshaft? Should you use solid or hydraulic lifters? Do roller lifters really make a difference in engine performance? What is needed to install roller lifters in a non-roller engine block? We will try to answer all those questions. You may have more questions like... how stiff should the valve springs be? If we missed any topics that you have questions about, please post your questions in the comments section below.
We don't stop there, we will be reviewing the Edelbrock Victor Junior intake manifold, Holley Sniper EFI, and the Paxton blower we installed.
Then as an added bonus, we created an eight-page downloadable PDF of all the parts we used in this build, we have included part numbers to make it easier for you to find these parts and do your own research. That download file is here: tinyurl.com/yyzj2sxd
We would love to hear from you guys, tell us about your engine build.

    @@710Garage do you mind updating your parts pdf to include a part number with each item and cost? most of them have a part number, but some don't. and it just makes it easier that googling prices if you have them available. haven't made it through all your videos yet, but its a factory 351 block right? also, did you use the studs that came with that billet girdle or did you order some from ARP? or were the ones included ARP studs?

    pricing will change based on where you buy , sales etc... so i would suggest just shopping a bit when you are ready to buy. yes its a stock 351w block. from the 70s so high iron content. i used the arp studs from the DSS girdle setup they are the same as you would buy from ARP so worked out well. the PRW ones were some chinese units that broke before even torquing down.

    @@710Garage oh ya, i'll def shop around. i just meant a rough price estimate or msrp or w/e.. some didn't have an actual part number to search though. i could of course just google the brand and what its going on to figure it out i guess. i can't wait to see how much hp you pull out of that. im trying to find a way to budget in a world products 4 bolt main block.. and ya, i trashed the studs that came with the PRW girdle and ordered arp's and had to do some "modifications" to make it all work together. just wasn't sure if it was actually ARP's that came with the DSS girdle. makes it even easier. thanks for the replies btw. :)

    ya i REALLY wanted a Dart block but had to draw the line somewhere... and for a car that was only ever meant to go get ice cream and cruise around the street i didnt feel like i would be able to get enough traction, or have the space to really stretch it out like a racer would. so for the 1 second blips of the throttle where on the street it breaks loose etc i hope the stocker will hold up well.

    That is a small little baby cam for the 408W. I'd guesstimate that you left at least 40hp on the table NA, and up to 100 when you add boost to it. It just won't have the lungs up top. Will be ok for picking up ice cream, but trying to meet your HP goals it'll fall short in that larger displacement stroker. You had a lot of duration left to play with and may find that it falls off after 5k rpms.

  • @710Garage

    @710Garage

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Nathan, Thanks for the compliment and the question. Without knowing more about your current fuel pump or your engine build it is difficult to say if you will need a higher flow fuel pump. The choice of a fuel pump comes down to the expected horsepower of your engine. In the Holley Sniper manual, it lists three possible fuel pump choices depending on power. The power ranges are; up to 800HP, 800-1000HP and over 1000 HP. Here’s a link to the manual, have a look on page 6. documents.holley.com/199r11489.pdf Good luck with your engine build!

    Do you think a Trick Flow single plane intake 351W will fit in a 1968 Mustang? The Trick Flow intake measures 6.429 inches. I am just asking because i know you installed a Edelbrock Victor Junior #2981 5.75 inches tall in your 68 mustang. So I was wondering how much hood clearance you had with that intake? My car has a factory 1968 Mustang GT500 hood so there is a little more room but not quite sure it will clear.

    @@710GarageThank you for continuing to engage with your audience. I'm considering doing something very similar and put a centrfigual supercharger on a 1988 ski boat. We upgraded the heads to the "GT40" ones and the intake manifold to the same Edelbrock one you're using. We're going to rebuild the lower end soon. Im still pondering on the idea of using a blow-through carburetor and other old-school stuff to support the supercharger, or going to EFI. Do you think it makes sense to switch the carburetor to a Super Sniper?

  • @710Garage

    @710Garage

    I had absolutely no luck with the efi.. if I'm being 100% honest for YEARS... I went to Steve Morris for a tune ( that sucked so bad the car wouldn't run ) I tried the setup wizard... I tried alot... but as it's a toy car for me I just put it away and when cooler heads were around I went back out to tinker... at the end of last season I went to Trevor at TC Tuned... he emailed me a tune and BOOM everything started to click... Through data logging I found an issue where the efi kept dropping my 02 sensor and it would fall on its face... working with holley they were absolutely amazing and I got another new sniper sent out... with the car sitting about 9 months I installed the new holley last week and it fired up like it was running 5 mins prior and seemed to be running awesomely... I'm upgrading my steering setup currently ( hope to be complete this weekend ) and I can get it out and test it... long winded answer but FINALLY I am so so so happy with it ( for the amount it's ran and driven ) and I should have gone to see Trevor sooner... let me update again next week but I'm 99.9% certain I will be back in love with my baby, and be a sworn holley efi customer for the long haul.

  • @710Garage

    the girdle is just for added piece of mind. it helps to hold the lower end together. its not NEEDED... but recommended. HV oil pump in my opinion is a MUST HAVE.... you always want as much oil as you can get to the bearings and internals of the motor so i would not skimp on this. the cam i have is setup for a blower. so yes you can for sure use different cams. there are TONS of options out there but ALOT will depend on compression ratio, heads, intake, stall convertor ( if auto ) and final gear ratio... so it would be hard for me to give a suggestion without that info. the folks over at Comp Cams are incredible to deal with. they can get you exactly what you want/need quickly and easily. i would give them a shout. BUT have that info i asked in the previous paragraph at the ready so they have the info they need. keep us in the loop with your build! and good luck. if you have more questions let us know!

    710 Garage I don’t even have heads or intake picked out yet, I was gonna run the ones you guys had, compression ratio I was aiming to stick with pump gas so what’s that 10.5:1 for 87 octane, I’m willing to go up to premium 93 octane or even E85 is readily available around here. And I was gonna stick with the stock converter at first and work my way up until I found something smoother Ik the E4OD trans is a tough sob so I’m hoping I can keep that stock and then the rear end I was gonna re gear to locking 3:55 I hope that is a enough info to point me in the right direction. Thank you and I will definitely keep you guys in the loop.

    710 Garage well for starters I bought the car it’s a 351w with mild bolt ons. Car has a good pep.. it’s running ridiculously rich. The previous owner in my opinion didn’t realize what he had hah told me it’s supposed to run very rich. I find that hard to believe. • @710Garage

    @710Garage

    4 жыл бұрын

    it shouldnt run really rich. well first you need to decide on a power goal. then investigate what engine parts you have ( forged or not, cam etc. ) once you know these two things you can start to map out if the power can be had with your current setup or you need to change some parts. knowing the power goal, you can select the right sniper and fuel system required, and you can start to purchase parts its important to go step by step here and not rush, so that you can save money later on
