351/365 JIMMY RUFFIN & MARCY LEVY (aka Marcell a Detroit) - WHERE DO I GO (B, R, M & A Gibb) (1980)

During the course of this year I aim to upload a song every day for your consideration as to whether they were good enough and sufficiently commercial to have become UK Top 20 singles. Many different genres will be represented, so if this particular one’s not your preferred style then hopefully it won’t be too long before you find one that is.
For those songs that are interesting enough for you to give them a proper listen, please press “like” if you think it could have been a hit, and “dislike” if you don’t, in the hope that we get enough votes to obtain a balanced overview. Also, if leaving a critical comment please try to take into account the year of original release - most of the songs that I'll be uploading are decades old so it wouldn’t be surprising if some sound dated now.
Today’s choice is a fascinating one! It’s a country ballad written by a pop and disco group, and sung by a soul legend and a rock chick so a marriage made in heaven or a disaster? I’m plumping for the former. The song is called “Where Do I Go”, it was recorded by Jimmy Ruffin and Marcy Levy (aka Marcella Detroit) and it was written by Barry, Robin, Maurice and Andy Gibb.
First released in 1980 on Jimmy’s Robin-Gibb produced “Sunrise” album it an exquisite ballad, and whilst predominantly country there’s a good smattering of soul in there too. Ruffin’s voice is as good as it has ever sounded on this one, beautifully offset by Levy’s high-pitched delicacy. Listen too for some Barry Gibb trademark falsetto near the end, on a note that only he was capable of reaching. One that will stay in your mind for days if you are into this type of music, it was purely an album track so sadly never had the opportunity to gain sufficient radio airplay to catch public attention.
Hopefully you’ll drop by again tomorrow for something completely different!
