The prices of everything now is absolutely ridiculous. Started with Upper Deck and Panini carried on the tradition. Topps gets a pass as the majority of their products are priced fairly. I just watch box break videos at this point or buy singles.

I remember paying 1400-1600 for diamond icons boxes. Same quality at over double the price hurts my heart for the hobby.

I remember spending $6.00 (six) dollars on a full box, 36 packs of 1991 Score Baseball... I pulled a Mantle auto, sold it for $500 on the spot... Those were the good days... I don't give anyone a hard time for what they spend or what they pull... It's all a gamble...

Nice pull! I opened so much of that garbage and loved every second of it. Every time I saw one of those green cards in the pack I'd get excited. Never pulled an auto, though.

$500 in 1991? By whom, a complete moron? Any of those /2500 Mantles could be had for like $50 in 1991. Hell one just sold in Feb of this year for $300.

@@snerdterguson cards are what you make them. They are absolutely NOT an investment to me. I'm a collector, so are millions of others. My collection might be worth something but I'd never stake any of my economic future on it. To me, calling my cards an "investment" takes the fun out and brings the grimeyness in. I'm not saying card investors are grimey, I think there's a lot of people who call themselves that and they are chum for the scammers.

@@paulnicholson5937 You completely missed the point. If you change this much for cards, you shouldn't be filling the product with stuff no one cares about. Getting cuts etc is expensive, but getting the top tier players to sign does not cost nearly what they're charging. In reality all card boxes should give you 50% ROI, which means the total value should be about half what you paid for the box.

I'm driving a car that cost less than that box lol 😆

These cards are "high end" but I'm not seeing the individual cards sell for anywhere close to what you'd need to get your money back. Usually if the box price keeps jacking up its because the boxes are still undervalued but I just don't see the value in these at all. Like a Julio auto /5 gets you about half your money back... how could a box ever pencil out? At least with a lot of insanely priced Panini products if you hit one of the top guys out of 5 you'll at least double your money back

You probably have to hit one "monster" per box to break even. But it's a pyramid scheme. You can only sell to other "collectors", the cards really have zero intrinsic value. They are produced specifically to be collected. Claiming it is a high end product. But these autos are becoming more common and worth less and less like a decaying isotope until one day it all blows up.

That's what I came up with. And that's assuming the relic actually sells for $60 and factoring in about $150 for the Chipper (I think I'm being very generous) before the chipper, I was thinking he had about the cost of one card in value.

You weren't spoiled last time... it's just $3.5k for maybe $500 worth of cards. I'd be calling up the CEO of Topps lmao. That shouldn't happen, not at that price point. There should be a minimum assessed value for each box. Even if its $1k

I legit was going to buy this product this year (I tried last year but by the time I tried to pull the trigger the resale market was awful) but after seeing this I’m a hard pass. I get not every box gets you close to whole but this isn’t even over $1k. Thanks for being the guinea pig…

when it says "the relic is not from any specific game, event or season," is it still a game used bat from that player? or is it a team issued bat from the player, not game used? some please clarify for me! Thanks!

The patches and bats used to be more authenticated. Now it is usually a gray area unless specified.

@@MrK623 that was at the beginning of the century. all the card companies got trashed for that and are a lot more careful now. even mlb keeps track of what relic comes from what game. if it doesn't say then it's likely just from the player. maybe the bat was bad but it's from the player.

People forget this product is very limited, nothing numbered over 25 so there's only so many cards out there so the price per box is going to be up there. I've seen multiple times more than 2 1/1s per box come out but of course some boxes are gonna be like this. I'd only buy this if I had money to burn.

2021 Topps: Send Phil loaded boxes 2023 Fanatics: We can't send him loaded boxes, so make sure there are no case hits in those.

Great lesson for a young collector...spend 3500 and get maybe 600 in value. Where has the hobby went? We didn't ever in a million years get ripped off like this in the 90s when there was 3 card shops in every city.

Hey Phil, as a former player your input would be great here. Guys like Bryant and Arenado etc ... are good players but their autos aren't worth much. It's even worse because they sign seemingly everything. Should Topps take the initiative and not ask them? As a player would you be offended by that? Should these guys be a little more aware and reel themselves in? Should we as fans stop looking at things through the perspective of how much money it's worth? All of the above? I'd love to see a video where you and some other players or collectors discuss this. A $400 box being a dud is bad enough but for $3500 you'd be lucky to sell those cards for 10% of that. Throwing a trout auto in every box would dilute his auto values so like, how do we fix this if we can fix it at all?

Not Phil or a former player, but to answer your question we'd need to know a bit more about what you mean by "fix"? Is it fixed if box prices come back down to more sane levels ie pre pandemic? Because to do that either supply has to get quite a bit higher or demand has to fall off a cliff. I doubt we'll ever see the magic of early 2020 again, where box prices (from manufacturers) were still low but individual cards were still (insanely) high. If individual card prices stay high, box prices will too. The disaster Fanatics needs to avoid is oversupplying when demand shrinks which TBH seems like the direction we're headed.

@@JP-rg1yj Yeah I have zero faith in Topps to do anything they seem rather clueless. Can't even do quality control on their base product let alone 1/1 high end cards being off-center or dented etc... I wonder how players feel because to us a Kris Bryant autograph is a bummer but to Kris Bryant this is the dudes life, ya know? Maybe the dude loves signing, maybe he gets offended that people value his cards so low. I'd love to hear how they feel about these sorts of things especially nowadays when they've got such young kids signing for draft sets and USA baseball and all those kinda things.

But I think I understand what you mean. Like, is there any way to try and level the playing field between the top stars and the lower level or mid-level players? Not sure there ever could be tbh.
