    30-30 is the goat of deer cartridges, it just works. And you can't _not_ like a lever rifle, so when you combine the two you have a rifle everyone should own, my Marlin 30-30 is one of my most cherished rifles. If I'm going and shooting out to 500-600+ yards I'll take the 30-06 or .308 but anything under that is just fine for a 30-30.

    In many states, they replaced the muzzleloading/black powder season with alternate weapons season and allow a strait wall round. That's why I'm here thinking about the 350 legend and the 3030 isn't legal for the new season.

    There's nothing wrong with the overal design of the 350 Legend cartridge. The bullet designers need to spend more time designing bullets that provide the best ballance between penetration and expansion. I just watched a video where a guy had all copper 140 gr bullets loaded to over 2300 fps. This may be a good path for finding that ballance

    Good thing with 350 Legend is that, because it's a 35 caliber, you can experiment with heavy revolver bullets in .357 or .358 caliber. I'd reckon a lead round nose or semi-jacketed-flat-point would do great in certain situations, if you do a little experimentation with the loads. Presuming you're a reloader of course.

    For the .350 Legend to be (originally) compared to the 30/30, in ballistics. It seems to have a lot more penetration, and foot pounds of force. I think a line of water jugs may be needed to catch these bullets, next time. I want to see those hollow points, and ballistic tipped bullets, expansion vs. the soft points. That 350 legend didnt even expand past the body diameter. They need to use softer lead or a lighter bullet for more velocity to get it to expand. You dont want it to penetrate 5 feet when hunting deer, thats just wasted energy into the dirt when it could use that for more vital damage. Might as well use a FMJ.

    This basically sold me on assembling my next upper as a 350 Legend. The ammo isn't _crazy_ expensive, but it definitely looks like a thumper that's legal for deer hunting in my state. For whatever reason, you can't use a 30-30 here during deer season but the 350 is apparently fine 🤷🏻 It definitely seems like a good all-around mid-range rifle cartridge and you're not really giving up too much in the way of capacity from a 5.56. It's not quite as versatile as 300 Blackout from a loading perspective, but it's probably more useful for us lowly civilians. Plus, if I want a quiet suppressed rifle putting down around 450lb•ft of energy on target, I'd just go with a 9mm upper. And the AR platform is so ubiquitous that you could use the same lower with a dozen differently built uppers...

    I don’t know they didn’t , like a 357 on steroids. Same with bushmaster why not go .44 and use all the 44 mag bullets that can handle more power? As is I love my bushmaster shooting 45 bullets on the cheap for plinking or such but getting stronger hunting bullets for deer is tough and only limited supply and expensive. In Michigan both 350 legend and 450 bush are popular since it’s legal in limited fire arm zones. Much better than slugs or buckshot. Wish they would have made 30-30 legal, silly it isn’t the bushmaster can actually shoot further. If you reload your can really push them as factory loads are made for AR rifles and bolt guns can be pushed harder. Some people are taking deer at 300 plus yards

    Still debating on the 350, I like the fact I can use it in Ohio or other states that are restricted. But I like a bullet to expand quick and still exit. Here in Eastern Ky I haven't seen any deer over 36 inches thick and carrying a book like War and Peace to slow it down. Good video with good camera work, thanks WTW

    I think the .350 wouldn't penetrate so much if it mushroomed more, the .30x.30 has a better fps. Or mushroom Can tell it's power dump was better on slow mode.

  • @DeanMk1
    @DeanMk1 Жыл бұрын

    I think your results are showing that the .350 Legend rounds you fired were not matched to the bullet used in that round, thus it lacked expansion. The lack of expansion put less resistence against the bullet as it traveled through the medium, allowing it to bleed off energy slower, thus it penetrated deeper. The .30-30 round you fired was better matched to the bullet, so the energy bled off sooner because the bullet expanded the way it was supposed to. It also appears the .30-30 bullet expanded to a much greater degree than the .350 Legend bullet did. Yes, penetration wasn't as deep with the .30-30, but it looks like it made it through at least one of those blocks, so even with (probably) around .300" more frontal area, it still penetrated at least 18", before that cookie sheet stopped it. Had the .350 Legend been loaded with a bullet better matched to the power of that round, I believe you would've noted similar results as you achieved with the .30-30.

  • @johnh4957
    @johnh4957 Жыл бұрын

    your experience at using common objects as bullet expanders shows , I didn't think a cookie sheet would have any effect, ya proved me wrong as it showed the expansion of bullet passing through it well and also enough to stop the 30-30 after the gel block. 'Bobcat Forever' had a nice demonstration shooting 350 into a soda can filled with dry sand, was like a bomb exploded with big globe of sand(velocity is king), to bad he didn't try to capture it.

    I just sold my 30-30 lever as it wasn't getting any love compared to my 350 Legend. That was an awesome video sir - just goes to show how much power the 350 has in terms of penetration. I honestly wasn't expecting it to not expand like the 30-30. The 350 is a great option where we hunt given that you seldom have more than a hundred metres visibility to play with, but the 30-30 will always be a classic in a lever gun. Keep them coming 😀

    Supposedly when you do a test like that with those ballistic gel blocks you're supposed to put some denim in front of block to simulate to get it to expand the bullet the problem is you don't shoot through a book or a steel pan when you shoot at a deer the bullet goes right through them it's exposed to expand inside them

FPS are over 2300 and flat ass accurate out to 200 yards on my set up. The only advantage of any of the 170 to 180 gr loads is increases penetration vs the 150 gr but the 170,180 lack expansion which is the claim to fame of the 150 gr.
