35. Wireframing & Prototyping (ft. Leon Barnard)

Wireframing is an incredibly useful design technique to flesh out conceptual ideas and communicate them to others. However, with the advent of powerful prototyping tools, some designers may think of these as irrelevant or outdated practices. Leon Barnard, Content Manager at Balsamiq and co-author of the book Wireframing for Everyone, discusses why he thinks wireframing is not only still relevant, but essential for maximizing creativity and innovative thinking.

I enjoyed the insight to “linger in the uncertainty” when not trying to be too perfect with the wireframes. Great episode!

Not too much rework! Yes, one of my favourite parts of using wireframes in the beginning. 😁

Thank you for stressing on real problem solving. In my experience, problems are solved at a wireframe stage - when the wireframe properly indicates which data points will be displayed and using which type of interaction pattern. Next step is mostly providing specs to that solution for developers and make sure that certain standards are followed. UX is about information, not boxes and arrows. However boxes and arrows are important too.

Great video. Having worked in the service design space for around 10 years within what I would class as your traditional IT service space I’m looking into broadening out into UX design. This video was really useful and I’ll take a look at the book👍🏻
