$35 DIY Mini Solo Stove
In today’s episode we make our very own mini solo stove for $35. As you know the solo stove can be bulky and cost a lot of money. So we made our own version of this great fire pit in under 30 min.

Make a video of it burning and a review!!

agreed. its just a theory until you test it. props to the resourcefulness of the dual pot though.
Drill some holes around the outside circumference of the inner one at the bottom too. I made one of these out of two stainless steel stock pots years ago and found that just having holes in the bottom of the inner pot would get clogged with ash. Having holes around the outside of the burn chamber, maybe a inch or two above the bottom, helps greatly with air flow. It will burn fuel faster but much easier to maintain the fire👍.
Nice DIY stove. I have the solo stove for the back yard and love it. This would be great for travel for sure. Thanks for sharing. Glad to you back to posting videos. 👍

Thanks for watching John! I love the Solo Stove. We just had to have one for the trails.
Your video on making the mini solo stove was such a hit that they no longer have the smaller ban marie insert in stock at Amazon and the larger 12 quart now costs $27. I have been searching online for similar items with no much luck.

Wow. They're 41 today. Oof.
If you put your stove on a stainless steel cake cooler with feet you'll have a smaller chance of a fire starting from the bottom on the stove being directly on the ground. Great build by the way! :)
Fun project. You can now buy this size gasification stove at WM for $35 as a Solo knockoff.
Great info You said 12 and 11 qt. But link is for 10 qt. So what size did you use. Thanks
Cool idea.
Very cool!

Thanks brother! When is the next trail run? Count me in.
A domed lid with all but an inch plus of the center removed increases the secondary burn.
No video of it in action?!??

No way? That sucks! That being the case it might be the same cost just to buy the small solo stove. Bummer.

They doubled in price because they saw where all the traffic was coming from, or they saw how many people were buying them. In demand item? Raise the price until people stop buying it. Then slowly reduce the price until they start buying again and hold the price there. Super annoying for the buyer, super thrilling for the seller
Does the insert pot need any sort of spacers added to its edge to keep it centered? Or does it sit in a lip or something? Thanks!
@TrailAdventuresTV

They should nest right inside each other. Some people have spot welded around the rim to keep it centered. I never bothered with it.
I really like how you gave credit to the other guy that made one. I just watched that before your video. I'm curious, do you get good radiant heat from the sides? one of the things I've noticed with Solo Stoves (Bonfire in particular) is that all the heat goes up and you have to sit pretty close to the fire. I'm not sure if its a difference in materials or something.

Thank you so much for stopping by and visiting the channel. I really appreciate your compliment. I believe so many people steal content from others without giving credit. This little DIY solo stove puts out a lot of heat. My expectations were blown away by this simple and affordable fire pit. You will not be disappointed. We used it for four days when we went on the Mojave Trail. And everyone loved it. It was the hit of the campsite. Even better it did not leave any burn scar behind.

They don’t radiate much heat thru the dual wall. I have been building larger versions of these for years out of old hot water heaters. I don’t build them any taller than about 16” and the one I have in my own yard, I put down below the level of the patio(basically set it down in a hole) so you can get more exposure to the heat from the fire. Getting close to it is not a problem though as they burn nearly smoke free and you can set right up next to them... Most of these I see built get way too many holes put in the bottom of the inner container. These really take very few primary air holes to burn correctly and cleanly. More holes will still burn well but it will consume way more wood than it has to for a nice fire. Trail Adventures looks like he got it about right. It might burn better with fewer holes. It is easy enough to block some off to experiment...
On the inner pot, what are the hole sizes? Are the bottom the same the top hole for 2nd burn?

Your friend has shared a link to a Home Depot product they think you would be interested in seeing. 7/8 in. SHOCKWAVE IMPACT DUTY Hole Saw www.homedepot.com/p/204994421
While still considerably cheaper than a Solo stove, the two Maries pots listed are currently nowhere close to the $11 mentioned in the video, one is $44 and the other is $25, and that's with Prime free shipping. Then you've got to add in those drill bits, which will kick things over $100 -- a long distance from the touted $35.

There is no doubt that prices have gone up considerably due to COVID-19. And also the demand for the product should be considered. You may be able to go to your local kitchen supply store and get it for a fraction of the cost.

@@TrailAdventuresTV Good point. For the 12 quart pot, Amazon has a used one for $7.67 with cosmetic damage but for this purpose that hardly matters so that hits the sweet spot on pricing. Is there a generic name for these things?
Fyi that 10qt pot is $45 and the 12Qt is $25

It’s crazy to see how much prices have changed in such a short period time. I guess now you’re just better off buying the solo stove. Unless you’re into little projects. Then it might be worth the money.
