3440 City of Truro.. Midlands Excursion.. 29/12/04
The National Railway Museum overhauled 3440 City of Truro to mainline condition for the Centenary Celebrations of the 100mph Ocean Mails run. To earn its keep the graceful engine ran a series of trains. This one started at Tysely and visited Birmingham Snow Hill,Stratford on Avon, Leamington Spa,Nuneaton and back to Tyseley.
The train is seen tender first at Snow Hill, passing through Shirley and departing Coventry.

The Greatest Engine i Havent see..
I think even these days, if Truro was rebuilt again it couldn't match it's old famous record it's a really splended locomotive for sure.
One of my favorite engines of the GWR
I’m a New Fan, I’m beginning to see the appeal of this Loco. Nice Vid 👍🏻
He's Spectacular, make no mistake. He is my beloved friend.
He did it I’ll do it! He did it I’ll do it!
Can't believe this medium 4-4 wheel configuration steam locomotive that build in 1903 can achive a speed of 102 mph IN 1903 i wasn't even born yet
Splendid video of City of Truro while still in steam - thank you for uploading! Would you have any objection if I were to use fragments of the audio from this and other of your videos as sound effects in a free, open-source non-commercial computer game called Simutrans, under The Artistic Licence 1.0 (opensource.org/licenses/Artistic-1.0)? This is a splendidly clean recording of a City class accelerating from a station. I should happily credit you, of course.

Its running as 3440 in the video so thats why I put that in the title, it would be odd if I had put 3717 when 3440 is on the cabside.. I havent got any footage of it as 3717.
The driver rather misjudged it approaching Snow Hill right at the beginning and if the gradient had been a little longer the train would have stalled. It's 1 in 45 and City of Truro cannot keep 7 coaches steadily on the move up such a bank. The hill has to be rushed with speed falling all the time and it nearly fell too much. In steam days the speed was much higher at the foot of the bank (it's pretty short) and trains simply coasted up it. Drivers probably thought of it as a useful bit of free braking but it needs good judgement.

Yes its deceptive climb up to Snow Hill from Moor Street. Just a pity its not the old Snow Hill.. a fine station.

Yes - a proper station. There's a short steep drop the other end, too. Been through it many times as a kid in the 40s/50s (Paddington-Chirk) visiting Dad's family in N. Wales. This is why I'm a GW fan despite my nearest station being Upper Warlingham. The Oxted line was a steam oasis amongst all the third-rail electrification around here.
Hey. May I please use some of your footage in my films? I will credit you for it.
