339/365 10CC - DON'T TURN ME AWAY (1981)

During the course of this year I aim to upload a song every day for your consideration as to whether they were good enough and sufficiently commercial to have become UK Top 20 singles. Many different genres will be represented, so if this particular one’s not your preferred style then hopefully it won’t be too long before you find one that is.
For those songs that are interesting enough for you to give them a proper listen, please press “like” if you think it could have been a hit, and “dislike” if you don’t, in the hope that we get enough votes to obtain a balanced overview. Also, if leaving a critical comment please try to take into account the year of original release - most of the songs that I'll be uploading are decades old so it wouldn’t be surprising if some sound dated now.
Today’s choice is Don’t Turn Me Away by 10CC which was first released in 1981 on the “Ten Out Of 10” album. As few songs will ever surpass “I’m Not In Love” as a ballad, the group have probably suffered from unfair comparison with subsequent releases, and despite this song being of a very high standard it was only a minor hit in Canada and The Netherlands. Many other bands would have bitten your hand off for a single of this quality, but by this time 10CC were no longer flavour of the month, and for their remaining 14 years chart entries were very hard to come by.
Hopefully you’ll drop by again tomorrow for something completely different!

It's a pleasant enough album track but it lacks the distinctive quirkiness of the classic 10 c.c. hit singles that preceded it. The same goes for the album. It's nice, it's pleasant, it's professional but it wasn't very inspired. It sounded like very competent craftsmen and producers turning out a product to order. I daresay that's what it actually was.

utterly dull and pedestrian!, not even worthy of "b" side status when you hear the standard of b sides like "Hot To Trot" .Was very impressed with Eric stewart's production efforts on 1980's "Facades" album for Sad Cafe but THIS....no, i'm afraid.Very sad after ALL the success in 1970's that 10cc AND indeed Sad Cafe are pretty much overlooked these days, in terms of Mancunian bands at least.

Each to their own Steve. Many ballads will sound dull and pedestrian to those who prefer more up-tempo numbers, but I like my ballads just as much as my pop, and to my ears this is quality. Respect your views though, and thanks for the various comments you left recently. By the way I adored "Every Day Hurts", "Strange Little Girl" and "My Oh My" (despite the Mick Jagger impersonation) but obviously couldn't include any on this channel as all were hits.

@@theyshouldhavebeenhits Always thaught ROD STEWART could have covered "My Oh My".I also love ballads as well as any genre, Commodores "still", Stevie W "Lately" Donna Summer "there will Always be A you" is amazing" and Andy Gibb "Don't throw it all away" sparkles. just 4 that come to mind instantly.Must reiterate though that your choice of this 10cc track leaves me cold.Have posted many other comms and will do more......
