338 Lapua vs 300 Win Mag vs 338 Win Mag: What's Best For You?

Спорт

To learn more about popular hunting calibers like the 300 Winchester Magnum, 338 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Lapua Magnum, visit: huntingguns101.com/optin16151...
In this video I talk about how the .300 Winchester Magnum, .338 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Lapua Magnum compare to each other.
I think most hunters would agree that the .300 Winchester Magnum, .338 Winchester Magnum, and .338 Lapua Magnum rounds are serious heavy hitters that can get the job done on big game. They are all relatively flat shooting and accurate cartridges that carry a lot of energy out to longer ranges.
However, the designers of each cartridge were trying to accomplish very different goals and built each one prioritizing specific attributes. For this reason, there are some massive differences between those three cartridges and they have very different strengths and weaknesses. Not surprisingly, though there is a little bit of overlap in their best uses, the .300 Win Mag, .338 Win Mag, and .338 Lapua are all best suited for distinct tasks.
So in this video, I’m going to do a detailed comparison of the 338 Lapua vs 300 Win Mag vs 338 Win Mag in order parse out the differences between those three cartridges so you can make an informed decision regarding which one will work best for you.

If Im in Alaska I'm definitely going .338 wm or .338 Lepua for the exact reason of the grizzly bears!!! Boy sighting in my old .338 win mag it literally penetrated through a thick massive tree at 100 yards I was very impressed. The .338 slugs sure do smack very hard!!! I love my .300 and it does great out in the west but it definitely has its limits as in yea will be good in Alaska but man I know what those grizzleys can do and if they charge I want the biggest thumper possible! Moose meat is the best meat on the planet hands down it tastes sweet like theres a little brown sugar infused in the meat!!!! Elk at #2

Having owned all 3 cartridges, I can honestly say the 338 win mag is my favorite . Recoil isn't sharp, just a very manageable push. More economical to reload than the lapua and a little more thump than the 300 wm.

@@Thebiggamehuntingblog 2 bull elk, 2 big mule deer bucks, 8 or 9 whitetail bucks, 2 wolves and a couple coyotes. I used Barnes 210 grain bullets and 70 grains of imr 4350 with federal gold match primers. If I remember right, I was getting 2903 fps through the chronograph. 3 shot groups off a bench at 100 yards would touch one another. 24" shilen barrel. The .338 Lapua seems to be mispronounced by everyone in the United States I think mainly because how our language sounds in English, but in Finish it’s something completely different. The correct pronunciation of the word Lapua is actually (Lop-pwah) said all together. So now you know and can impress your friends with your newly gained knowledge, LOL.

I really enjoyed this comparison and how thoroughly everything was covered. I have had the privilege recently of shooting 338 Lapua and 33 XC. I have absolutely no reason to lug around platforms like these, with this much mustard. However, I am a long time sentimental to the 338 win mag. This is far more practical for me to use to humanely dispatch anything I'll ever hunt at ethical distances. So out of all the 33 bore cartridges, this should be what I would choose. I resorted to borrowing my Eskimo friends .338 Lapua and took one at around 600 yards. It did it’s job well. I had the pleasure of doing a share and shoot with the British Army in Afghanistan once and had the immense pleasure of shooting the L115A3 with a suppressor on it (cool factor). They doped the scope for me, but I was able to put all 10 rounds that I shot on a 10" plate at 1000 yards. Since then, I've always wanted one. Although a bit (way) out of my price range, I've always wanted one. I will have a .338 LM, although not that one. I'm 5'5" and 120lbs and the recoil was just fine to me. Just really fell in love with the rifle. About as much love for it as the McMillan TAC-50.

AAAHHHHH!!! The Lapua 338 Mag with Recoil Suppression and a Muzzle Brake Suppressor, Barnes TTSX BT 280 grain (high BC) and a very long barrel, of 30" or longer, can give a Ram or Sheep a "kiss of death" at about a mile. It is good for anything from varmints to the largest of Moose, Bison and all Bears. For the biggest and most dangerous of game, the Weatherby 460 Mag with the Barnes TSX FB 450 grain (low BC) and a moderate barrel, of 28" or so, will have a serious impact on the really big boys at up to around 300 yards, but better less than 500 yards. What is the difference in Rifle Weight when you consider that you might be packing less than 100# to over 1,000# of meat out several miles over rough terrain, such as Alaskan Mountains or difficult to walk on Tundra. In that case, the Rifle Weight is not really all that significant.

Ive owned a .338 wm and I currently own a .300 wm I had the .338 wm in a Ruger M77 stainless, I loved the rifle and how it was built it just had a bad barrel on it, it was a gift for guiding a guy to his forst archery bull so I just sold the rifle, I used to buy cheaper rifles like $500-700 and I just didn't like the feel of them, even the Winchester 110 ultra light its got a proof research barrel great barrel but the rest of the gun just feels cheaper and for a $1200 rifle I just wanted more so I stepped up and went Christensen MPR and boy I love the rifle!!! Its shooting key holes at 300 yards and often and at 100 yards Im in shock at how well this rifle shoots!!! I plan on building a Christensen Ridgeline in 6.8 Western it's hitting 17% harder then the 6.5 PRC at 500 yards and 34% harder then the 6.5 Creedmore! Winchester made the best round with the most foot pounds at 500 yards and up without hitting a magnum rifle, it really is a short action almost magnum and that's just what I was looking for in a deer gun, was also going to throw a can on the rifle I was shocked at how much they quiet the gun down and how these cans make the rifle group better! I also love these new rangefiners that do the calculations for you when you insert your round information. I have a chronograph so that helps. I do eventually want to build a long range .338 ill probably go .338 Norma Magnum since the military is now using it so they should be making a lot more ammo and seeing how they shoot a heavier round to buck that wind is exactly what I want in a long range round, the .338 Norma Mag has some of the best ballistic coefficient hence why the military have picked the round as a sniper rifle AND IN A BELT FED MACHINE GUN!!!! WOW

You did a really good job going over these three calibers. Very in-depth and precise. Personally I would not hunt with a 338 Lapua, that amount of muzzle blast and recoil would much better be suited to a 416 Remington. I use the 338 WinMag with a 200 grain SST or 210 grain Partition on hogs. This is typically all done under 200 yards. But a buddy of mine in Alaska uses the 338 with 250 grain Partitions on brown bear. It’s his favorite load. But to tell the truth, my favorite all-around cartridge is the 300 H&H. It requires 3 to 4 grains less powder, for the same velocities as a 300 WinMag. It’s just a much more efficient cartridge, and nothing cycles more smoothly in a bolt action. Since you often talk about African hunting, you should do a spot on the venerable 300 H&H. By the way, even compared to the new 300 PRC, I just did a little test, and the 300 H&H was using 7.25% less powder of H4831SC to acquire the same velocity. Nothing new under the sun, and this includes a 300 WinMag. I also prefer the 308 Norma to 300 WinMag. Both of these were the modern replacement for the 300 H&H, but I don’t think either did any better.

I agree with your assessment of the .338s. A 338 Win Mag with a 250gr Partition would be deadly on bear indeed! That's also a good idea about the .300 H&H. Might need to keep that one in mind...

@@Thebiggamehuntingblog - I found your channel looking for African hunts. Can you think of anything that says African hunting, like the old British cartilages? The 300 Holland & Holland is just classic. Winchester was looking for a cheaper solution, not a better one when it came up with the 300 Win. It’s powder consumption is less efficient, and has a much shorter neck than the H&H. Please don’t think I’m stuck in the past, or nostalgic about an old caliber. The darn thing works very very well. The 300 WSM matches the performance, but it can be finicky in a cheap rifle.

  • @falba1492

    @falba1492

@Jess Hadlock - The 300 WinMag is by no means a bad cartridge, but there is no advantage to it over the other 30 calibers. I’ve never reloaded for a 308 Norma, but I can definitely tell you the 300 H&H and 300 WSM have advantages in efficiency. The 300 H&H can handle much heavier projectiles and at faster velocities than the 300 WinMag as well. It’s my least favorite of the 30 calibers. Keep in mind, when Winchester and Norma were developing their respective cartridges, they were trying to match the 300 H&H performance in a standard long action, they weren’t even trying to better it, just match it. It’s less expensive for a manufacture to put a cartridge in a common long action, then using the magnum action required for the 300 H&H. And so it becomes marketing’s job to convince you that a less expensive product is better lol. The 300 Weatherby is indeed one hell of a thumper, it is incredibly flat shooting. Although, personally I stepped up to a 338 WinMag in exchange for the overbore and muzzle blast. I prefer the frontal diameter and being able to use a heavier projectile, but that’s more of a personal choice. No one is going to argue the effectiveness of the 300 Weatherby.

I like the 300 H&H also I’ve shot the 300 Winchester magnum and the ultra magnum and of the three calibers the 300 H&H is really accurate with what ever I have loaded the 300 Winchester magnum is more finicky and the 300 ultra magnum is accurate if you can handle the recoil I had to put a muzzle break on mine because when I was hunting elk and was shooting up hill or down hill I would get a scoped eye even though it had a Leupold scope with 4 inches of eye relief and you know what that does for accurate shooting so now with the break the recoil wasn’t bad if you like muzzle breaks

@ Frank B. A. - Re: "I also prefer the 308 Norma to 300 WinMag. Both of these were the modern replacement for the 300 H&H, but I don’t think either did any better." The selling point of 300 WM was originally that it would work in a standard long-action rifle, rather than requiring a magnum-length receiver. But having a magnum-sized receiver isn't all bad. The shoulder and case body on those traditional Holland and Holland magnums - 300 H&H and 375 H&H - is very gradually tapered, which leads to very reliable and smooth feeding, which is something you want when facing big or even dangerous game in the field. They are also accurate, easier on your shoulder than many hot-rodded modern magnums, and have all that tradition and pedigree behind them, years upon years of success hunting around the world. What's not to like?

I have the Omen 300 win mag and it's perfect with it's 14 round magazine. recoil is very good and ammo is easy to find. less recoil means better shots. better recovery and follow up shots are very fast. in fact you can shoot 3 shots at 1000 yards on steel and hit all 3 before the sound of the first hit. try that with the other two caliber's.

Great video. A lot of information. I would have liked to see the information for the 225 grain 300 WM bullets. It was mentioned and then wasn't in any of the charts. The 338's are the way to go on big game as the larger diameter bullets mentioned. I know from experience the 35 Whelen is very effective on black bear. Especially with the bullet technology available. Something that I think should be considered is making an ethical shot. How far is too far.

I have a .338 WM rifle that I liked pretty much, but I never shot an elk and so I didn't really need it. Also I think the bedding has gone bad, or possibly at my age I can no longer shoot it accurately, I don't know. I don't shoot it any more. But if I was younger I'd have a definite preference for the .338 WM. The Lapua cartridge is crazy; I would not bother with it.

Good, thorough comparison. I do find it mildly amusing how you switch to speaking Finnish every time you say Lapua 😅 People tend to get all wound up about pronunciation, but there are infinitely many proper names that are pronounced differently in English than they are in their original language. We don't say Moskva, Rossiya in English, we say Moscow, Russia. Mexico, Montana, Florida, Los Angeles, Johannesburg, Gouda cheese, and even Jesus himself have their names pronounced differently in English and it's totally correct. I'll keep pronouncing it "La POO uh" because I speak English, and that's how 95% of people pronounce it in the USA. I think the 338 Win Mag is the best for elk within 500 yards. 300 Win is not far behind and better for deer at ranges beyond 500. I shoot a 338-378 for long range elk hunting, which is similar to the Lapua.

The .300 Win Mag is a beast and seems to do 75% of what a .338 Lapua can do. The 6.5 Creedmoor is impressive and practical now. And I’m not even a boomer. 🇺🇸

I always have my 45-70 with for close encounters tho. I have taken a moose with a 338 win mag and can tell you it kicks far harder then my Lapua 111, the 111 with muzzle brake is a pussy cat.

So I would settle for the .300/.308winmag or the 6.5 Creedmoor depending on what your hunting. Plus still have capability to shoot 1000yrds

Now toned down to 2900-3000fps they are very accurate and very lethal to all north american game at beyond 500m, though I dont think it's ethical to hunt at ranges within it's upper capabilities
