Chris I agree with you on the campfires. Hardwood for cooking, pine for everything else. I predict you'll do as many others have before you. You'll smash your rear window, then after replacing it go and get a headache rack.

So far so good, it will make a great video when it happens!

From the Pacific Northwest 100 miles north of Seattle we have Alder, Big Leaf Maple and Birch hardwood for fire wood. Apple, Cherry and Alder for smoking. I'd say the wood of choice for fire wood here is Fir, a couple of different species. Less ash with the Firs. We got a bunch of Cedar too. We have tons of Cottonwoods but frown on that for fire wood unless you're broke and can't afford the good stuff.

Yes Oak is great for coking with, so is hickory and locust and maple.

Glacier split oak burns longer! It split open a lot slower!!😂 I agree people should burn some cherry and pine for campfires. Smells awesome. See ya on the next one. GNI

Yes I try hard to discourage people from trying to buy oak for firepit or campfire wood. Most people just don't know the difference and all they have ever heard is that oak is the best wood.

In the south, people pretty much only burn hardwood for recreational burning. Pine that would make "firewood" get pushed into brush piles and burned as trash, or left to rot.

Being a certified chimney sweep and installer and in the Firewood business and living in central Canada when the customer asks me what wood is best my answer always is “Drywood.” We heat for nine months of the year majority of my wood is Pine and Poplar as that is what the dominant species in my neck of the woods with a little Tamarack and Birch. For heating I always suggest mixing a softer wood with a hardwood they complement each other perfectly . oak and Ash are available but cost a fortune. Chris isn’t the customer always right?? 🤪

Yes they are right but, some think that their favorite is the only wood. That is interesting that you have first hand professional knowledge about the firewood to burn. I have a few customers that have told me their chimney guy told them to keep buying wood from the same guy (me) because he could tell that the stuff they got (from me) was good! Their chimney was clean!

In Australia red gum is popular. Personally dry wood burns a lot better than wet wood.

If I'm cooking over the fire, I prefer oak. It gives the food a great smoke flavor. If we are just sitting around the fire burning wood. It is all the crap wood sitting around. Odd pieces, punky, and softwood all go in. If they're paying giv'em what they want. 👍

I like a mix of pine and oak .you get the best of both worlds. pine is hard to get here in Texas it's all hardwoods. the way I get most of my pine is getting the small cut off pieces from construction sites that they don't want 2x4s 2x6s etc.

Red oak is the quickest growing oak out of all oaks burns quickly well in the UK it does. My customers not fuzzy they like mixture of all hard wood and softwood mixed up no problems

I prefer Douglas Fir bigger the better or Arbutus but split it when it is green cause I don’t have a splitter our Gary oak is good but so much ash.Best of all is natural gas LOL Have a good one!! Bob

Like you say but he buying it recommended you sell the oak $$$.the weather in the UK is crazy we getting April showers in may lol it was the coldest driest April in 50 year's. This time last year we cutting hay 26c

I hear ya I burn pine in my fire pit but a lot of people don't like all the flying embers especially in a campground with campers with rubber roofs and tents

All wood smells good!

At the campground delivery, you mentioned Locust wood. It's called fence posts around here. The spikes can puncture a tire, and at around a couple inches . Before the Clovis Comet, 12,900 years ago the spikes were over a foot long to prevent the Mastodons from damaging the trees. Evolution has diminished their size since then. Saginaw Bay and the Carolina Bays are a great research for a rainy day. Take care and keep on working the wood, oz

Yes hickory is great wood for sure, we do not have a lot of it here.

Not too much of a wood snob here. I will take just about anything that is free. I have gotten picky about getting stuff that needs to be trimmed down, knotty pieces, cut too short by a tree service, or stuff that has to be lumped up a hill or out of a backyard. Otherwise, species really doesn't matter. Also about your truck. you probably already thought about it, but a backrack would be good. I got the kind with the 2 inch grid steel. Works great. I even went for the cheaper one, seems as good as name brand.

Loved your little oak tirade! 😂 In MN we burned mostly ash, it was easy to cut, split, and it dried quick. We have oak but didn’t really cut much because of all the reasons you stated.

Hi Chris I’m from Alberta, you’re right we have mostly pine, spruce aspen/poplar and fir, a little tamarack and birch, we burn birch in the fireplace, and the other in camp fires, hauled loads of prefab steel up North and they originated in Ontario they had 4X4 maple, I took it home and it made great firewood. Looking forward to the TRACTOR. Keep safe my friend

If memory serves you don't have that much of a price difference between mixed and oak. So people are going to buy the better wood. In my area it's about $60 a Face for any hard wood and 25$ for pine, aspen, and other real soft wood. Plus delivery. If you buy a mixed hardwood load there is no aspen in it.

Here are some species and their btu’s per million in a cord. Red and white oak 26.39. Maple 21.59. Ash 22.30. Apple 28.72. Locust 27.30. Black walnut 21.5. Cherry 21.3. Orange Osage 32.90. Dogwood 27.00. Hickory 29.21. Birch 21.71 and the winner is pinion pine @33.50. I love when people use oak because it means someone cut down that nasty tree. They drop long stringy stuff in the spring, then acorns and finally acidic leaves. Only furniture and fires are good for oak!!

It's Like buying a sports car to be a grocery getter, It does the job, more expensive, but more in style. .. same with campfire wood of oak. Buuuut. It pays you the same if it's for camp or for house heat. 🏠

For all the years I sold fire wood here in Florida If it wasn't oak they would just turn there noses up, and the worst offenders were the snow bird. I did have hickory and pecan but that always went to the BBQ guys. I'm no longer selling firewood but I still heat with it and most always start my stove with pine then switch to oak ore cherry and still get dirty looks from my friends and family when they ask and I tell them what I use go figure.

I personally don't mind a fast burning wood, but when the drinking and partying squad pikes on the wpod like a pyromaniac, the cheaper the better. Is sacrilege to pile on the wood as if is their last day. My neighbors bought a truckload from someone else after they bought from me.

I have had a bad experience with pine. Had a brand new camper we were parked about 25 ft. From the fire it was popping and cracking all at once we noticed numerous burn holes in our new cannapy Not good.approx.850.00 dollars.

Here in central North Carolina, we are fortunate to have timber that for over a hundred years produced some of the most beautiful furniture on the planet. Red Oak, White Oak, Black Oak, Post Oak, Hickory, White and Black Walnut. Folks from other parts of the Country have posted that it is sacrilegious to burn this gift from the wood to heat my house, so I can see your point.

I only burn lightning struck thin bark pin oak grown on the north side of of slightly clay based, rocky hillsides that has be processed by hand tools (that were built using only hand tools) by left handed Mongolian Amish Community. I pay a little more, but it's worth it.

I suspect you wouldn’t, but did you charge stacking fee for the first pickup load, even though there was help with stacking? It still took nearly the same amount of time as if you had stacked it because you couldn’t just chuck it off.

Oak burns slow and hot. On a cool night you get the heat and burn less wood, which makes your supply last longer. Oak also is a great fire wood to cook over. Personally I like a mix of wood, last year I had some odd pieces of maple, pine, and some oak. I like to burn the odd ball pieces or odd splits when I go camping.

For me hedge, Osage Orange, is king. But Icut oak, hickory, locust, cherry, ash, and hackberry as well. Around NE Kansas, these are what is desired and most are what you can go cut.

You could get those ones that go on your truck door that are magnetic so you could take then on on off. I think this would be a great idea. People will see you signs and give you a call.

I like to burn oak in my fire pit if I am going to do some grilling because it gives you a better flavor than pine. If I am going to just burn for enjoyment I like to mix pine and oak because you get the long burn with the oak and the pop of the pine.

Nobody down here in the south burns pine, everybody wants oak. I guess it’s because of the creosote buildup and black smoke. But on your suggestion I found some really dry pine and tried it in my fire pit. I was amazed at how well it did, it burned hot and had a big bright yellow flame with very little smoke. It’s almost impossible to sell though!

I simply like burning hardwoods. They burn good and long smell good and just nicer for me. But I’ll burn what ever when it comes down to it. Once I have a big enough stock I’d love to supply a restaurant. Do you do any restaurants?

If wasn't going to be so busy this weekend in my woodyard, I'd bring the new toy to your woodyard for you to try out. Give you a hint, is smaller than your saws but is a Husqvarna XP. Got a really light saw to reduce back fatigue but still cut fast. Think that is a good idea for people that don't have a strong back yet?

@@InTheWoodyard, YEPPERS! Buying it to reduce back fatigue when cutting at waist level and the smaller logs. My big Echo 590 and my 372xp clone.and 660 clone are way to heavy for me to use for long unless can let the log take their weight for a while. The 550xp should help reduce lower back fatigue until get my back rehabbed. Think that "baby" saw will rip through most of the Ash that John brought me?

I know a guy that burns elm exclusively. There are lots of dead standing elm trees in his area, so he uses that. Dense wood, lots of btu's. It's a pain to split.

Yup, pine to me, is great campfire wood. But it all burns!

Well,,,I'm still watching and clicking but you tube has done something to the comments and I cannot comment or even see the comments most of the time and on all the channels I watch.....all I see is that circle goin round and round....and makin me more dizzy than I already am!!!!
