#31 Home Office Makeover with Houseplants | How to fill a room with plants without soil

Thank you for watching.
This is a daily VLOG of Ritsu, who lives in Kyoto, Japan with my husband and daughter.
Please turn on the subtitles in the settings.
The subtitles are using a translation application, so if there are any mistakes, I apologize.
This time I decorated my home office with many plants. For a houseplant beginner, I felt it was a bit of a hurdle to put many potted plants with soil in a room. Eventually I would like to try my hand at houseplants using soil, but first I tried decorating with branches that can be grown with water. I think this will keep the initial cost down and make it easier for beginners to enjoy houseplants.
Please enjoy the video.

*Please turn on the subtitles if you need them. I've longed to have a bunch of plants in my home office! This time I decided to start with branches that can be grown in water. I want to grow them well and enjoy the fresh greenery for a long time ☺️🌿. And the other day, I also enjoyed the autumn leaves at Shisen-do Temple and Enko-ji Temple 🍁. Since I couldn't include all the footage of the autumn leaves in this video, I'm thinking of making a video of just these autumn foliage scenes 🥰If anyone wants to see it, I'd love to hear from you in the comments! Also, I couldn't show you in the video how to make large branches last longer that I learned from the florist, so please let me share it here☺️🌿. I've been mixing the liquid nutrients recommended by the florist into the water this time. I will do a water change about every 10 days. Cut off about 1.5cm from the bottom of the branch at the time of water change and make a cross cut. If this works, I should be able to enjoy them for more than 3 months 🥰 I'll give it a try! Your likes, channel subscriptions, and comments are very encouraging! Thank you 😊

Filling the room with plants makes it seem even more cozy. I wanted to try plants in my house but was afraid of the upkeep especially with soil just like you. You have inspired me to try plants without soil, i don't why i never thought of it. Thank you for a wonderful video as always

A recommendation for you and everyone who wants to grow plants but want to avoid soil: Try to grow regular houseplants in water - this is known as 'hydroponics'. I try to break it down so a beginner will understand. 1. Hydroponic fertilizer Soil has two functions for houseplants: to stabilize and to provide nutrition. As long as you fertilize regularly with a hydroponic (!) fertilizer, you don't need soil. 2. Clay pebbles Clay pebbles are highly recommended, though I myself didn't find them to be absolutely necessary. They store moisture and nutrition and stabilize the plant. 3. What about root rot? Generally, root rot is caused when plants are overwatered. Bacteria will start to decay the roots, turning everything into stinky rotten roots. Done right, hydroponically grown plants will not suffer from root rot, for the bacteria that causes the root rot does not live in water. If you want to grow a store-bought plant that is currently sitting in soil hydroponically, it is key to rinse the soil off very thoroughly. 4. What plants to use? Every regular houseplant can be grown hydroponically. Compared to branches, they live many more years. Hope you found that helpful. I am no expert on hydroponics, so if you are interested please look it up yourself in detail. Furthermore, just wanted to add that soil isn't that scary. If you keep an eye on the plants and don't overwater, you usually won't have to fight with any mold/mites. Except for younger plants, you don't need to repot for years if you fertilize. There are also many super forgiving beginner friendly plants out there (e.g. some Ficus, Zamioculcas zamiifolia, Dracaena trifasciata, Epipremnum aureum, Chlorophytum comosum ...). I'm happy to help with questions °(^-^)°

Putting the plants immediately in front of the bookshelf is giving off a negative vibe, as if you are blocking off the positive energy from the books. It seems as if knowledge is illusive and I'm unable to obtain it. Just my opinion though.
