307. Yorkshire Dales Road Trip

Filmed in April 2022, this road trip starts at Fore GIll Gate, south west of Langthwaite, and calls in at Askrigg, which was used as the fictional village of Darrowby in the original series of 'All Creatures Great and Small' and finishes at Grassington, the new 'Darrowby' in the latest 'All Creatures' series. I absolutely loved this episode! I am in awe of all the stone work - fences, buildings, foliage planters - all of it. I will never get to see your country myself, and I thank you for showing it to me. I've made a note of the episode number so that I can take this virtual trip again. Thank you so very much, Alan, for all the time, energy, and talent that you employ to produce your videos.

This was truly a pleasurable vlog to watch. I was mesmerized by the visual content, from the miles of stone walls to the stonework within the villages and towns. Your editing and dialog, was such, that it permitted the viewer to seamlessly join you on your journey and experience your driving prowess without having to actually buckle up. Great job and thank you.

Thanks Alan, for taking us along on this lovely journey which was beautiful, and the drone footage was fantastic. It must have been difficult to drive all that way through all those very old country roads in your sizeable camper van and also, I really appreciate the amount of skill and effort you go to when filming, editing and uploading your videos. Take care and all the best. Stevie

I have read the James Herriot books several times and seen a few of the TV series shows. I really liked seeing the Yorkshire area and the connections made to the books. I may have to read them all again during this winter just because! Thanks for giving us a visual of the area. Have a great winter and we will follow along with your vlogs. Thank you, Mr. Davies, for this video. I have the books of, "All the Creatures Great and Small". It had been a long time from the first series to the newest iteration that I had not even noticed the difference in locales. That was good to find out. I have watched the first two seasons of the new series and miss the original actors. Just as there is only one James Bond, Sean Connery of course! Although Daniel Craig is growing on me. When I was stationed in London in the late seventies, my fiancée asked me if I wanted to go to Minorca or take a canal trip. I chose the former and regret it to this day. I live vicariously through you and really love the DIY segments. I will continue to cruise the cut from my armchair, thanks to you and others. Thank you again.

Thank you for watching and commenting. I think the first iteration was more polished, had more action and apart from the main characters, a great cast of known supporting actors. I still find the current series well worth watching and knew it would be from the opening scenes of the first episode. I’m sure a lot of people would have chosen Minorca. I’m pleased you get pleasure from watching my videos, have you watched my Summer Cruise series? All the best.

Hi Alan ,busy week this week with one thing and another so now just getting a chance to catch up. Yorkshire is part of England that I'm less familliar with but I too was a big fan of All creatures great and small. The series gave me the impression that Darrowby was much smaller than it actually is.The drive reminded me of Dartmoor to acertain extent and although the well know expression is "where ther'es muck there's brass"I think it might well be "why don't we build a stone wall'. When youwere climbing that steep road with many bends and curves and you had to blow your horn I thought Alan is back on the canal .You mentioned the Lake district is there another travelogue in the offing? as that is a favourite part of England for me. Another delightful episode Alan well done and thank you . Cheers from me and Canada where I must report this week we had our first snowfall ,enough to turn the lawns white but its gone for now although its much cooler ,today's high was +3C and tonight its_7C Take care, see you soon

Hi Ralph. Yorkshire is one of my favourite areas, my most favoured I would say being Snowdonia. It’s years since I’ve been to the Lake District, so sorry to disappoint, but no road trip coming from there. Dry stone walls are a feature of the Dales and I find them visually very attractive, at least they don’t grow and block the view like hedgerows. We still have some sunny days here, temps around 8 to 10C. Snow can be very pretty but is such a nuisance as well. All the best, take care and keep warm.

A lovely drive Alan with stunning scenery. I mentioned in a earlier vlog that I spent quite a bit of time in the area, my friend lived in the village where 'James Herriot ' lived & she'd tell me she often saw Mr & Mrs Wight, they had son Jimmy who was also a vet & a daughter who I believe was a GP. I also believe Douglas Sinclair who was the senior partner, who was Seigfried in All Creatures lived close by. I also remember my father having the Sunday Express in the 60's when it was a broad sheet & James Herriot writing a small column each week. I know he took his name from a Scottish goalkeeper but often wonder why he chose him. Almost opposite their veterinary practice in Thirsk is the house that was the birthplace of Thomas Lord the founder of Lords cricket ground. Sorry to ramble on Alan but brought back some good memories. Keep up the vlogs they're most enjoyable. Regards Mike.

Hi Mike, that was very interesting, thank you. I visited the surgery in Thirsk, as it is now a museum. It’s interesting you should mention Douglas Sinclair. It was actually Donald Sinclair. There are two notable Donald Sinclair’s, the vet that Siegfried was based on and an hotelier in Torquay who ran the Gleneagles Hotel. It was this Donald that John Cleese based Basil of Fawlty Towers on. All the very best, take care.

Hi Alan what a super video. Scenery was amazing, the only thing I find off putting is the speed issue it makes me feel giddy. I suffer vertigo badly and speeding along and things flicking by doesn’t do much for my head. I still loved it though, and realise that you have to speed it up for an half hour video. Nevertheless it was brilliant. Have great week. 😊

Hi Sandy, I’m so sorry it made you feel giddy. The film was not speeded up, it was all as recorded. It was a long journey and I edited the footage to make it the length it was. I wasn’t actually travelling fast. I’ve noticed that the boat seems to be speeding along at times, which it isn’t. All the best, I hope you’ve recovered, enjoy your weekend 😀

Hi Alan, I really enjoyed that so much, and the music was great to. You know except for the villages dotted along the way you’d think you were in parts of ‘Middle Earth’. Hopefully I’ll get some footage of that next year, I’ve just got to set up a good driving camera. Always wanted to see the Dales also. Take care & thx for sharing. 🙏💙🙋‍♀️ (not sure I like this new handle thing.)

Hi Kate, I'm so glad you enjoyed it, it is quite barren in places. A good dashcam might suit you, I used a GoPro mounted externally on the side of the door. I've not really looked into this handle business, should I? All the best, take care.

@@MyNarrowboatVenture hi Alan, no don’t touch the handle thing, you’ll lose your channel title as your comment name if you get me. I did, so after some thought I made a bit of a close enough name till I figure out how to get rid of it. I prefer my channel name than a handle. x

Alan I really enjoyed that. The scenery is so much like the scenery in Cheshire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire. It was interesting to see the villages and buildings that are used in All Creatures. As you know, I also like that programme. I hope you don't mind me saying, I don't mind music , but I'm not a fan of that particular music, it makes me think of smashing plates in a Greek restaurant! But thank you for a lovely vlog, that hill was something else! I was imagining cycling up it! 😅. xx

I'm glad you enjoyed it Jenny, I love Yorkshire. The music is what I've always used to accompany road travel, and it is very popular with viewers. It's interesting how it conjures up different thoughts from viewers, someone thought it was reminiscent of Jethro Tull, which I can well understand. I tend to think of an Irish jig. You'd be fine uphill on your electric bicycle, it would be effortless xx

@@MyNarrowboatVenture Hi Alan, so far I have found that hills are not effortless. The bike is a pedal assist, so I still have to put an effort in. I'f had a new set of gears on my bike and bought new tyres today, so I'll see what it's like next week when I go out on it for the first time. xx

@@MyNarrowboatVenture No, they are just old, the specialist in the bike shop who did the work, noticed small splits all around the rims, and said that means they are beginning to perish. Also I wanted better treads to help on rough roads and the Bissoe bike trail, which is very stony and rocky. xx

Glad you enjoyed your trip through Gods Own County (my place of birth & residence for the last 69 years) so I know that area very well, just one slight criticism although it's probably due to your accent as the a in Grassington is pronounced as a short a rather then as ar. Didn't spoil the vlog though. The original All Creatures Great & Small was a great series to my mind a bit better than the remake & was affectionately known to many of the cast as 'All Creatures Grunt & Smell'

Glad you enjoyed watching Keith. Thanks for correcting my pronunciation, I pronounced the Grass bit as I do the green stuff on the lawn. I agree the first series was better, I've been re-watching some of it since making the video, there seems to be more going on in each episode and we had the benefit then of many well known supporting actors. I like the affectionate name, not heard of that before.
