3000 Mile Roadtrip In a Junkyard 1963 Impala - Lemons Rally 2018
3000 Mile Roadtrip In A Junkyard 1963 Impala
#shitbox #impala #junkcar
We did the Lemons Rally again this year. We decided to go at it much more aggressively, and it paid off. We all hopped in a 1963 Impala Casey drug out of a field a few weeks prior, where the car had sat since the 1970's.

This is awesome. I have a 62 impala myself I’m restoring I’ve had it for 2 years now. The first year I went thru so many problems almost everything that could go wrong went wrong. One time the radiator hose blew up on me on the highway so I had to replace all the hoses. It’s crazy you did this in such short time. And gives me confidence on taking it out on a road trip.

2 1/2 hour engine change in a parking lot of AutoZone, my hats off! Impressive!👏👏👏👏
love how these old cars with the 6 cylinders are so cool to look at and so easy to fix and drive even if the vehicle is bad condition. Love how easy motor swaps are in the old cars. easily a 2 hour job for a six cylinder motor swap.
I've gotta join one of these rallies some day. This looks like so much fun.

A friend and I planned to do one of the Cannonballs back in the late '70s. We figured we could do well. One thing driving (no pun intended) us to do it the most was Corvette News had a '63 in it with a showboard stating it was the world's fastest Corvette having run a Cannonball in around 36 hours (I think - it's been a long time) and we figured we could beat that and take the title. Part of it was going to be inflight refueling. We were going to station a few friends along the way with gas tanks and pickup trucks and pull up side by side and fuel as we went. Even if we had to slow to 55 or 50 to do it, it was MUCH faster than pulling off the highway, into a station, gassing up, and then getting back on the road. We figured 4 or 5 of these would save us an hour or more and that could really put us in the running. The problem was the costs. By the time we figured all the money spent on gas for us to NY, to LA, and back home, plus gas for all these mobile refueling trucks, and the food, lodging, etc., for them, the costs were going to be staggering for us. And we were advised that while it probably wasn't illegal to refuel on the fly like that, if a cop saw us, you can bet they would cost us a lot more time than simply stopping in a station to refuel, In the end, it turned out to be a great source of entertainment planning and that was it.
Terrific video as it affirms my undying love of Americana, and old cars in whatever condition! Here in Canada, Full-size Chevies were and Pontiacs were common with sixes, and I think its pretty cool that the guy not only kept the 6, but swapped it for another.
I like the Patina on those old 1960s cars👍. Awesome 63 Impala

That rover is an SD1 and looks to be an ex police car - if so it'd be a 3.5 litre V8 high way patrol car . Because of the paint + graphics they were known here in the UK as a jam sandwich. It's a long way from home .

Back in the 70s we drove from Ct to S Carolina in an old MGA and the engine started knocking. When we got there we borrowed a VW and a heavy rope to haul the engine out over a tree branch one night. (rope tied to bumper) Had the crank turned for $3 per journal and put new bearings in it. We used the oil pan and the electric fuel pump as our parts washer. 2 days later we drove it back to Ct. On the way home the radiator blew out (beyond repair) so got one from a Plymouth wagon for $25 and tied it to the bumper, then got some LONG radiator hoses through the grille opening. Still have the car.

Sounds like an adventure. I was driving a 202 HZ ute from Sydney too wagga wagga at night during a storm when the water pump shit itself about 50 km out of Sydney. I wrapped heaps of string around the crank and alternator pulleys and drove about 1 meter behind a semi for the next 350 km with the road spray from the back of the truck cooling the engine. I had to turn off the highway and the car died about 3km later. I got flat towed the last 100 km by someone passing in a 4wd
@rupe53

@@MrDemonchild71 ... that sounds similar to a friend's 50 Chvey 6 cyl that blew a water pump on a rural road. He joked about needing some "water pump grease" and this old timer came out of the garage with a can of water pump grease. This was the early 70s and he had no idea that was such a thing before before 1930. We screwed a grease fitting into the weep hole and lubed it up. Got us home and lasted another week!
Congratulations! An epic display of fortitude!

Would it be legal to drive a car with another countries rego plate while being registered in the USA?
@GGigabiteM
5 жыл бұрын
@@Mercmad Most likely not, even cars classified as "classic" or "antique" must have plates and be registered. I have a 1988 Dakota with classic plates and I have to pay tax and registration on it every year. The only difference is that usually cars past a certain age are exempt from emissions testing. Keeping an old car emissions compliant is pretty much impossible since many of the emissions components are either unavailable or ridiculously expensive.

@@Mercmad In some places, you can register plates from another country to use on your car, as well as using old plates from the same state/province.

Great memory, your repair of the engine well done
A white '63 Impala coupe with a red interior is such a quintessential '60's machine. I had a '64, but I always preferred the lines of the '63 better. Keep the original steering wheel in it. It's not only one of the coolest, but it just looks right.
Awesome video!!
That car is awesome wish I had it.
Wow I really want to do this. About 10 years ago I drove what was left of a 1964 Ford Fairlane from Phoenix, AZ to Allentown PA and back (well, almost back, the transmission crapped out about 200 miles from home and it had to be towed the rest of the way. No 2 speed Cruise-O-Matic transmissions anywhere to be found. The front end was so bad that new tires only lasted about 1500 miles. I took 2 new mounted tires with me, swapped them in Broken Bow, OK, made it to Allentown, PA, where I had to get 4 new tires, 2 to get me halfway back and 2 more to get me the rest of the way. Engine burned oil really bad, I ran 60 weight racing oil and STP in it. I still have the car, sitting up on blocks to keep it from rusting any more. I might just find another engine and transmission for it, patch up the front end, and give this lemons thing a try. The worst that can happen is that I have to sell it for scrap somewhere along the way and take a bus home. I love the title of your channel. Never owned an EFI vehicle in my life and never will. I'm a 62 year old auto mechanic, though I seem to spend more time working as a computer technician than a mechanic these days. Computers on wheels SUCK
That horn man I about died laughing
Great job!
This looks like so much fun
Love the surface rust and blue fenders. I would keep it that way and just make the car mechanically good and fix the rot with sheet metal. What fun is a pristine 63 impala. Lol. You see them at car shows all the time. I have a 63 olds dynamic 88 really clean. I did brakes, tune up,new radiator,etc and had the car painted to its original color but in hindsight I should’ve left it ratty and wouldn’t have to worry about nicks and scratches. Good luck with it. Great video bro
Real rockstar s***... something most modern celebs would never understand. This is how all the old stars did it without tour busses. Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon, Johnny, big land yachts like this going hundreds of miles across the USA.
I decided to have a look at that Bentley you guys found at around 12:00 there. Somehow it is still registered here in England, first on the road on 14th September 1967 apparently. It hasn't paid road tax since 27 July 1984, so I guess thats when it got exported over to America, or around that time... Either that or thats when the system for tax here first got computerised. Very cool! Awesome video so far, just thought I'd share this info :P!
Thank you.
