When I lived in Alaska for 37 years, I shot big game animals with many different calibers, including a lot of magnums. But I always came back to the 30-06, cheaper to shoot, less recoil, and anything I shot died as quickly as with any magnum. Bullet construction and bullet placement, as with any caliber...

The 300 Win Mag really only comes into play for game the size of bull elk or bigger. A close friend killed everything from buck antelope to bull elk using a 30-06 and 165 grain Nosler Partitions. No hair on the 30-06.

The added .300 win mag velocities might have caused more violent expansion, therefore it decreased penetration, but increased energy transfer. I wish you could do the test with a monolithic, non-hollow point bullet.

With my handloads the difference in velocity is only 154fps between the two. And the win mag needed 10 more grains of n560 powder for marginal differences in velocity. That was with the 212gr eld-x

Chris Cary it’s almost over 800 foot pounds, depending on ammo almost 1000, of extra power that’s more than some gains... what are the benefits of that? Much quicker kill at closer ranges, and the biggest advantage it lets you reach it further than a 30-06. Let’s be real the .300 win mag is no African round.... its just better suited for black, elk, and moose and farther ranges period. You make it seem like it’s twice the price of the 30-06! It’s not. And yes it has a more violent recoil, well yeah it’s more powerful but pretty manageable and I’m only 5’9” 190. Face it, it’s a superior round wether you like it or not, facts don’t change because of personal opinions.

Well it *did* beat the 30-06 :) Oh, one of the things I really like about these videos: No matter how joyful and excited you get, you always handle your firearms with all the respect and profesionalism in the world. No swaying the muzzle here and there, no fancy waving the gun around, no finger on the trigger until the shot is taken, only load the round (or rounds) you need to fire. You know, all the stuff that a man should have learned from his Ol' Man or Grampa. I've seen so many complete idiots on youtube acting like under developed toddlers with a weapon in their hands, and I get aggrevated each time. Thank you for (in your own subtle way) reminding the rest of the world how to handle firearms.

Thank you for the video ! I enjoyed it very much. I’m an old hunter and I have hunted with both cartridges. Years of experience has led me full circle after using many rifles and calibers. My go to rifle today is a pre 64 model 70 in 30-06 with a 180 grain boolit. I find it does the job very well on most North American game. My big bear and African dangerous game rifle is a .375 H&H. It is a Sako Finnbear. Certainly there are larger and more powerful calibers available but I have had great success with the .375 H&H and the 30-06, two of our oldest and most proven rounds.

Entertaining & interesting test. I've owned multiple rifles in both cartridges going back 35 years of handloading for my guns and others from the .22 centers to the belted and "designer" magnums. All that said ... I picked up a new Ruger American in .30-06 last month. Drives tacks with all loads I've bench ranged so far. The .30-06 is an excellent balance of efficiency and a heavy hitting 30 cal. round with this huge variety of bullets/powders/factory ammo we have to choose from today. Your 300 WM round met less mass/resistance here with the hit up on the edge of your stack. Better would have been 2 separate stacks hit center-mass by both rounds. The 300 just hits with more foot-lbs. of energy - but - the advantage is marginal vs. the recoil and other cost/benefit factors. Thanks for sharing and happy hunting!

WHO_TEE_WHO I’m gonna assume the prices there are relatively close to what they are here in Georgia, Walmart has federal blue box 180grain 300wm for $20 a box. Cheapest 300 I’ve found. I hunt primarily with my 300 and I swap between them and the expensive Winchester ballistic silver tips. The silver tips do a lot more damage but they’re badass. This past season I shot a doe in the shoulder because she was walking and when I squeezed the trigger I reckon she stuck her leg back and it literally blew her shoulder off. If I could post a pic on here I would lmao. It was rough but definitely showed how awesome the 300 is. Still love me some .35 rem and .270 lol

Not really surprised. Just like the 06 only starts to shine over the 308 once you get into heavier bullets the 300 really only starts to shine Over the 06 once you move up to 220 gr. With similar bullet weight there is very little difference in 30 cal class . I’m liking the paper plate testing. I bet the humble 556 NATO or just basic 55gr 223 would surpass all the other bullets you tried.im thinking small and fast may win. Great video

I don’t know about this test, don’t people choose the 300 Win mag over the 30-06 because you have the ability to load a hotter heavier round? I think a better test would have been to compare these to calibers with a load at their max capacity.

Th 30-06 is a potent hunting round and will easily take all but the biggest toughest animals on the planet. The Win Mag does the exact same thing only gives you 150 more yards to do it. Downside to the Win Mag is the extra cost of the ammo, extra powder burned, the much louder report, and extra recoil. Still a fun gun to shoot though there are some people who can not handle it. I was a "magnum only" guy until I spent a bunch of time seeing what an "aught-six" can do.

This more about the bullet construction than the cartridge. The 300 Win Mag dumped a lot more energy into the target. The slower velocity of the 30-06 actually is in it's favour for a test like this, given the bullets used.

  • @no_regerts5176

This is true. Bullets are meant to perform their best at a velocity window that is up to 1000 fps slower than their muzzle velocity. If impact velocity is higher, the bullet can come apart and not penetrate ideally.

I realize both calibres face identical set-ups so a fair comparison. a lot of energy is absorbed by the stand. would like to see a sturdy stand with shear reinforcement to stabilize it. and a solid stop as part of the stand, those blocks move. then a more accurate measurement of what those loads can do.

Yeah but that's normally what happens when you want bullets to travel faster. Physics typically tries to hinder you the harder you try to push combustive energy and Projectile velocity. If we compare apples to apples by using imr4350 and 180gr bullets in both calibres, then we TYPICALLY see a 24% increase in powder consumption for a 15% increase in velocity. So yes you can say the 30-06 is more efficient, but so are most calibres travelling slower than their 'like-bullet-dimension' cousins. If you need the extra power, then the extra powder consumption is just tough luck really.

Is that if I shoot 150 grain 30-06 hornady superfomance my round has more down range energy at 600 yards than a 180 grain sierra match king fired from a 300 win mag with a standard length barrel. So with modern propellants 30-06 touches at least the bottom of the 300 win mag spectrum. Makes you wonder what the hornady superformance does for the 300 win mag.
