    Something that Achilles from the Iliad would have never said. He was himself a king and the son of a king. All the great Greek commanders were kings and also fought in battles themselves , Agamemnon was not a fat bastard like he’s portrayed in that movie , he was young , handsome and an excellent fighter. Don’t fall for Hollywood propaganda.

    @@mybrotherinchrist5 Xerxes was actually an extremely cultivated and civilized ruler. He always maintained he came to Greece to save the Greek city states from themselves, who were always squabbling and fighting. He actually quite admired Greek culture, arts and philosophical thinking. only Athens and Sparta really stood up to him, and he and his advisers regarded them as more of 'rogue terrorist city-states' than anything else. It is worht noting that the Greek Historian, Herodotus, bothered to travel to Persia to get a first hand account from Perisan survivors of the wars as well as Athenian/Spartan ones, and his account of the two invasions is actually, for its day, incredibly unbiased and thoughtfully presented. Far from painting the Persians as a bunch of marauding ogres and Xerxes as a God King whose sole purpose was to get everyone to bow down and worship him, he actually takes his time and details up a proper 3D character of the monarch.

    Aristodemus (the character Dilios is based on) was regarded as a coward after Thermopylae for not turning back like Eurytus. Aristodemus was considered a coward and was ostracized by Spartans upon returning. And yes he did redeem himself. Sadly though, he was given a Spartan burial. (Reserved only for Spartans who died in war and women who died in childbirth) but was conveyed no honors. He frequently broke rank to charge the enemy, and was not content to defend his unit. Also, the stain of his leaving despite Leioniades I's orders. (The other man hung himself).

    The historical reasons for that are actually quite interesting, turns out heavy infantry in thick body armor defending a choke point are very effective against an army used to using speed and maneuver tactics to defeat its foes and thus was much lighter armored and equipped. The Spartans were a fearsome warrior culture to be sure, and they utilized the terrain well. But this wasn't about skill, this was mostly leather armored men with slashing blades used to fighting other foes similarly equipped forced to charge straight into a line of the most heavily armored soldiers in the world at that time and to fight in those soldiers favored method of war. The modern day equivelent would be ordering light infantry to assault a line of Bradleys or BMPs, over time numbers may win you the fight but you are going to take horrendous losses.

    Maybe the fact that he didn't lose 20,000 men to 300 Spartans. Those losses were incurred against some 8,000 Greeks over the course of two days or so. On the third day when the rest of the Greeks had withdrawn and only 300 Spartans and 800 of their Helot cannon fodder remained, they got massacred quickly.

    @@xdx2653 I do, I'll put it down for ya. It's attic greek, which they indeed don't speak anymore." Ω ξειν’ " goes for Passerby, or Stranger. " αγγέλλειν Λακεδαιμονίοις " is the part of "message the spartans/report to the spartans". "ότι τήδε κείμεθα" is literally translated to "that here we lie". And the last part, literally translates to "those who obey their words". So, the entire thing, literally translated, goes: "Passerby, report to the spartans that here we lie, those who obey their words." It's not translated more nuanced like in the film, where the sentence is changed more to give credit to context and information for those who don't know, but it's still cool to know these things. Many other lines in the film also come from ancient greek texts, as the joke of "fighting in the shade", or "breakfast feisty, for we dine in hell". These are ancient texts written by Plutarch, from his "Sayings of Spartants, 225b and 225d. If it interests you, please check it out, it is both hilarious and epic at the same time.

    And so my king died, and my brothers died, barely a year ago. Long I pondered my King's cryptic talk of victory. Time has proven him wise. For from free Greek to free Greek, the word was spread that bold Leonidas and his 300, so far from home, laid down their lives. Not just for Sparta, but for all Greece and the promise this country holds. Now, here on this ragged patch of earth called Plataea, Xerxes' hordes face obliteration! Just there the barbarians huddle, sheer terror gripping tight their hearts with icy fingers - knowing full well what merciless horrors they suffered at the swords and spears of 300. Yet they stare now across the plain at 10,000 Spartans commanding 30,000 free Greeks!... The enemy outnumber us a paltry 3 to 1, good odds for any Greek. This day, we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny and usher in a future brighter than anything we can imagine. Give thanks, men, to Leonidas and the brave 300. TO VICTORY!

    @@skillcoiler "The Allies broke Germany's will". Germany is not an individual. There were millions sick of war and I'm sure thousands or tens of thousands or who knows how many who would've wanted to continue fighting in the Alps around the Obersalzberg. But "Germany's will power" is not a "thing" that can be "broken" because Germany is not an object or person that can have a human characteristic such a will power. And the amalgamation of each Germans individual desire to continuing fighting is unquantifiable in any case. What can be quantified are the massive losses in lives, material and industrial capacity Germany suffered which are what ended the war. The idea that will power can overcome everything on the battlefield has often lead to disaster. History is littered with examples of which I'll name a few. The Japanese army belief that complete discipline and the will to defeat the enemy is what lead to suicidal banzai charges. The army command later recognized this mistake and decided to dig in knee their island fortresses making things much more difficult for the Marines and soldiers. In WW1 the French command believed in will and Esprit de Corps which manifested itself in the "Cult of the Offensive". The theory was that disciplined, motivated troops would be able to overcome any defense, regardless of the number of MGs and are as long as they had the will to keep marching. We all know how well that worked in France between 1914-18. If will power could triumph over anything than surely Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg would have been successful. The simple fact is will power is not the final arbiter. Though the willingness to suffer privations in war has been and always will be important in determining success or failure in battle, it is not the be all end all that a movie like 300 makes it out to be. Though it does make for entertaining cinema!

    I loved the speech at the end of this movie, but I think the tactical brilliance of the Greeks at the actual battle of Plataea was more impressive. The Greek and Persian armies were at a stand still, with the Greeks being out numbered. For a while they simply were standing there facing one another, unable to move as it would put the other force at the advantage. The Greeks were the first to move, but not forwards. They made it seem like they were falling back, exposing their flanks to the enemy. So the Persian leader ordered his army forwards to kill the Greeks. Once they were close enough, the Greeks turned right around and formed a shield wall to advance. At this point the Persians were committed to the attack, and their defeat.

They have the richest history in the world, and their temper, nationalism and heroism thru history is fascinating. They kept their honor till now days. Such an amazing country, culture and nation. My mom studied Greek history at university and it's not enough to say that she is still head over heels in love with it, so am I. This may be the greatest ending a movie ever had. When he says "today we rescue a world from mysticism and tyranny and usher in a future brighter than we can imagine" it reminds me of why everything Carl Sagan wrote was so beautiful. I hate when someone says for this somethin like: "that is just a movie", well yes it's a movie with it's movie components, but god damnn it, 300 Spartans against all that Persian army is a HISTORY FACT which cannot be denied. Imagine boys and girls who are watching this, 300 people against tens of thousands people and still they hold them back. I have my degree in Archaeology and History and I really researched Spartan way of life in every detail, and this is a fact: they were the best soldiers and warriors this world has ever seen, because their entire LIFE was a path of warrior, and one more thing, imagine how honorable was Leonidas and his 300, because even today they are alive trough movies such as this, trough history, and imagine how many IDIOTS lived in last 2500 years, who remembers them in this manner as we remember Leonidas and 300? Think about it, so live your life with honor, so that you can be remembered, not trough history or movies hehe, but trough your children and family, in the end, that's why Leonidas and his 300 went to defend that piece of earth, and for freedom, wish you everythin best ppl...

  • @CroPETROforeverNBA

    @CroPETROforeverNBA

    9 жыл бұрын

    Ciaphas Cain I agree with you, I know a lot about samurai dont worry :) but that wasn't my point here, the point was how many of ppl disrespect the fact of old ancient ways, and they dont understand it in right way... they think it's a science fiction only because they live in pussy-ass times when man greatest achievement considering bravery and "spiritualism" is how to turn on Iphone and Samsung Galaxy. They forgot human aspects from this period, as well from period of 20th century like when men went to the Moon in a fuccking refrigerator, now they dont have a balls OR SPIRIT to send a men to orbit anymore, they forgot the men who went to discover new world once, without any insurance for their lifes, they even question today the truth of it, they even say that never happened, well ofcourse they do, how can they imagine from their pussy-world perspective they living in somethin like that... They even classify a movie like GRAVITY as Sci-Fi only because it took place in Earth's orbit, not nowing that crew of Apollo 11 and 13 had 10 times more problems than Sandra Bullock and Clooney in that movie, but to them, that's a Sci-FI, I hope you get the point. TAKE CARE.

    Also, almost everything that the Greeks of the classical age gave to humanity, came AFTER this battle. If the Persians had won, and managed to conquer Greece, we have no idea if people like Pericles, Aristofanis, Plato, Pythagoras etc would have been able to shine. "...and usher in a future brighter than anything we can imagine." He really had no idea how much truth is in that sentence.
