I was a senior in high school when this was on Letterman. I went to bed early that night, because of a long day at school. My dad was up watching tv and saw that Satch was going to be on, so he woke me up from a dead sleep just so I could watch it. Needless to say, I was wired after watching this performance, that the next day at school was a rough one. I wore my Extremist t-shirt to explain why I fell asleep in class. I've been a die hard fan since 1988!

@Andy Butler I will definitely give that a listen. If you've got a spare five minutes check out Andy James "Welcome to the crazy maze" It's a bit heavier but the arpeggios are so delicious, it's got a killer main riff as well.

I think Sach falls into that category of you can make an argument for any song or any album. It all sounds great.

Andy Johns, baby. Joe basically heard what he did on Van Halen's F.U.C.K. and said, "get me that guy". 😎
I love those chromatic runs. That “Late Night” band was so good. Joe you are the greatest!!!

@@johnjones5977 - Yes both albums are masterclasses in song writing and guitar playing. For me Crystal Planet was the last album I really enjoyed from Joe. Done alot of great tracks since but as an entire album it hasn't lived up to the earlier stuff for me personally.

Check out Thai shredder Jack Tammarat play guitar then🤔 He was probably at that show🎸🎶 Talk about wonderfully influenced by Satch❤🎸🎶 I'm prepping to see the maestro on Nov. 1st here in York, PA🎸🎶
One of Joe's best solos 👍🏼 Probably his best record too, he'll always be the 🐐 🙏

I’d have to agree wholeheartedly to that statement.
How can this be 30 years ago, it still seems like the *new* album to me! Years ago I spent an huge amount of money (for a 22 year old) on a recording studio setup.. 8 track VHS ADAT system. The music shop that sold it to me gave me a VIP ticket to meet Joe in person when he flew into my country. I had a signed Frank Gambale guitar that Joe was going to also sign, I was so excited. Anyway, I waited for 3 hours in the store only to find out his flight had been delayed and he wouldn't make it to the signing. I was so bummed out as Joe and Steve were my fav axemen. Felt like a clown walking out the store with my guitar case. Played the blues that night for sure!

Classic music shop rip off
I love how happy Joe looks performing this! Loving the exposure and making the most of it by playing his heart out, loving every moment and note that comes out of his guitar and harmonica. Great performance - one of thousands.
One of my top four favorite albums from Joe, maybe even the top one or top two!
One of my favorite album of Satch 🙂
I still have the cassette tape I bought at the time with me! Still an incredible album and track! 🤘🎸🤘
Joe is not only of the greatest players, but one of the greatest composers ever of guitar solos.
I really like this album, especially the song "Tears in the rain"
Love going to his shows. Been to every tour since flying in a blue dream, also G3 a few times and saw Chicken foot. All time great!
This album make me mad. Awesome skills. Still listen it
I remember watching this when it aired. This November will be my 31st time seeing Joe.
Just about the last time when anyone with musical talent appeared on TV.
My favorit Joe Satriani album 😊

Wow 30 years ago..I've seen him so many times over the years..time Flys
I love all your albums Joe but The Extremist holds a very special place in my heart because I've been listening to it since I was 14 and it always fills me with a blue sky happiness !
Paul Schaffer and the band kicked butt back then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The very first record I listened from Joe Satriani was The Extremist, I was in high school in 1995, and it totally ignited my passion for guitar. I spent hours and hours studying this record, it totally changed my guitar playing. Thank you Joe.

My first Satriani song was "Psycho Monkey" from "Crystal Planet"...song Nr. 13.😉 I can't play the guitar but I'm a huge fan! I was so amazed by the refrain he did with the guitar...so he changed my music taste, from "normal" music and Techno to >>Rock

"War" and "Hordes of Locusts" hit me like a ton of heavy bricks. I mean, before listening to those pieces, I was playing only classical fingerstyle guitar!!!
Still the greatest album of his career! I can't even count the number of times I played this when it came out... still bust it out every couple of months or so...
Vintage 😎🤘🏼
30 anos desse clássico, incrível! Thank you Joe!
My first Satch's album I bought back in 1995.
The great Anton Fig on drums here as he was a member of the Letterman house band. Satriani rocks!
Surfing With the Alien was an awesome tune to drive to. Still is.
Great moment see him on his tour in Lille France 🇨🇵🇨🇵🇨🇵
And around 40 years ago I remember when he used to live in my old neighborhood jamming in his garage and driving his old Plymouth Duster down the street.
Just bought a tickets for the LA show in September---Can’t wait!!
Saw him on the Extremist Tour (and many others).....remember being at Birmingham NEC and opening act was Adrian Legg......took the whole arena to a jaw dropping quiet with just his acoustic and a small amp......then Satch came on with the Bisonette boys and they did what they did. Remember it like yesterday.
The Satch deserves more respect and recognition than he has gotten over the years. Light-years ahead of so many other great players.
tpaed the harp right on to the bullet mic...brilliant!
he was crazy at that time...crazy Giuseppe....Satriani
man, it don't get any better than that.....quite the backing band that night
wow. I feel so old watching this.
Geez Joey!!! So out in the galaxy! He blew the roof off that stage!!!!
Happy Birthday to my favorite album!!
Mesmerizing guitar player , Love Joe's music, great vintage time capsule from the past on Letterman Show. Thanks Joe
Joe's the best. I can barely walk n chew bubble gum at the same time. Joe can shred and play harmonica at same time all while wearing pajamas 🤯
Bravo, yeeeeeeeh 👍 very good 🥇💯
Canadian plug there. Global Television Network is a Canadian news and broadcast network. I remember watching this live on Letterman. I was in college at the time... Great performance as always Joe!!! Cheers!
His music is more melodic and listenable to for me than Vais, but I love both and can’t help resent how effortless they make it look while displaying musical mastery and genius.
Congratulations.!!
Classic 🤘
The guitar into a Boss DS-1 into the Marshall...that's it? Sounds incredible, what a legend!
what a legend
Joe is our legend
Pretty sure that's Anton Fig on drums! Spectacular man.....

I first bought the tape...sheesh probably 18-20 years ago and loved it!
Fav Satch tune. It's a monster.
Amazing perfect performance
Happy anniversary!
A stellar jam, you could tell everybody in the band is enjoying themselves and firing on all eight cylinders, Great jam guys keep on rocking…
W 2005 roku mój kuzyn po raz pierwszy puscil mi jedna z pierwszych płyt Joe Satriani. Płyta kosztowała prawie miesięczna pensję jego ojca ponieważ byla kupiona w latach '80 . Polska wtedy była za żelazną kurtyną. Muzyka i koszt płyty były absurdalne i chore.
Out of all the shredders joe is the master
Kicked this album as my best driving tunes ....one end of 1-75 to the other.
That band must have been so excited to play this!
Amazing energy Jo Jo!
Joe Satriani is amazing 😍
His best album
GRANDEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have this recording in storage on VHS and was on my KZread channel for years. Great performance from Joe and the Paul Schafer band live. Great album and sound as well. As a Guitarist by profession this album was so we'll produced and melodic and influential in my development. "Flying In a Blue Dream" is amazing but this album was so raw sounding. "Why" and "War" are stellar tracks. Along with "Cryin" and this great title track! Thanks Joe

Couldn't agree more sir, 'Why' and 'War' stand out for sure. The raw and heaviness and sounds of those two tracks had a huge impact on me as a young musician.

Can you imagine a time when a solo guitarist got to perform on a major US television show?
EXCELLENT ! Thank you !
crazy after all these years and all the super crazy young guitar players out there that sound like computers, the OG guitars gods are still Gods. This has aged very well. Good songs!
I remember buying this album when it came out, I was stationed in Germany in the Army. Fantastic album!
