30 years after apartheid ended - are apartheid victims in South Africa being ignored? | DW News

South Africa is marking 30 years since its transition to democracy from the racial segregation of apartheid.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has led celebrations in Pretoria. His government is expected to face its sternest test in next month's elections. South Africa is one of continent's leading economies but severe poverty and rising unemployment have dampened much of the optimism from 30 years ago.
Today, many of those who fought against apartheid are still demanding justice for the crimes they suffered.
For more on this, we talk to DW Correspondent Dianne Hawker in Pretoria, South Africa.

Still want reparations from more than 30 years ago while the statute of limitations is 20 years? They should protest the current government that has kept the money for themselves

Unless I missed something, perhaps what's being ignored is that select portions of South Africa are a few steps away from becoming Mad Max. Corrupt, incompetent and violent people rule, hate crimes run rampant and all progress is being destroyed. It's disheartening.

The TRC's emphasis on reconciliation and chose forgiveness over prosecution, and reparation over retaliation. It was so hopeful, a new way to get further together...a light for humanity! And now....😢30 years on

Sometimes you gotta let it go and focus on the future. By not letting go the past, they only drag on the problems into the past and future and they will always remain victims of apartheid.

Unfortunately the country will never move forward and reach its potential while so many people are looking backwards. The ordinary people are great, it's the politicians that are the problem, regularly opening old wounds to score political favour, creating false expectations, spreading blatant lies, and then being involved in massive corruption once they any sort of political influence.

And since apartheid was dismantled (which was clearly the right thing to do), South Africa has deteriorated to the point where it nearly resembles a developing nation. They suffer from eroding municipal systems, failing water supply, intermittent electrical blackouts. It's sad to see.

That's what you get with septuagenarian politicians. the wealthier they became, the more they distance themselves from the issues that got them into power.
