30 Hours Of Driving Lessons BUT She's Never Reversed A Car

Today's driving lesson is with Mahwish, she's had over 30 hours of driving lessons but she's never learnt how to reverse... Most of her driving has been on major roads at higher speeds, so she struggles with manoeuvring the car at low speeds as she's never had to use clutch control.

I feel bad for the people that pay for driving lessons and the instructors barely help them 🙄 it seems to be pretty common that some instructors just don't do their job properly and give useful lessons. I understand people learn at different levels but EVERY instructor should be aiming to get as many passes out of their students as possible, it's not just about making money on a lesson.

yes! some instructors are awful. i’m from mexico, where you literally can have your licence by just taking a 20 question test (it depends on the state but that’s not an exaggeration, it’s literally how i got mine, you can even get it without having driven ONCE. it’s shameful, tbh), so instructors give even less of a damn. driving lessons are expensive and because it’s not required to take them, or pass a practical test, people just learn with family. and because there’s not a lot of demand, the number of driving instructors is very very low. i did take driving lessons, but because there are like a total of maximum 40 driving instructors in my state, they are very concerned with just giving you a crash course so you learn the very very basics and on your way you go. they have two types of courses in the school i hired: the extensive and intensive courses. the first one is like an hour every day, for 5 days of the week (and that’s it); and the second is 3 hours saturday and sunday (again, and that’s it unless you hire them again). i took the latter and, let me tell you, i BARELY learned anything. i learned what the gears were and… basically just that. not only did the car have dual pedals, it also had two steering wheels and my asshole teacher was correcting my steering all the time, just like litte tiny touches, i noticed not because i felt the wheel different, but because i was seeing him move it. why couldn’t he teach me instead of doing it by himself? he would also just brake or accelerate whenever he wanted, he virtually never let me turn and ofc never taught me about observation, rules or anything else. he just checked i knew how (not even when!) to accelerate and upshift. i didn’t know how to brake when going at higher speeds (downshifting is one of the plethora of things i had to learn by myself), when and how to turn (he just mocked me saying that i wanted to crash into parked vehicles when doing sharp corners), to deal with parking, narrow spaces, mirror checks, to change lanes or merge. because we basically just practiced in smaller, less busy streets, where i could only go so fast, i didn’t learn to deal with myself and other vehicles going fast. and the course was very expensive, specially considering how much i learned. what i got from it is that i just lost the nerves and gained a little confidence by realizing that he was basically in control all the time. it was helpful to drive a little and realize it wasn’t as scary as i thought. now i drive decently well, but i learned by myself. i learned by watching these types of videos and reading about the laws in my country. but i’m still pissed. now i lowkey want to start teaching the right way in a few years. someone has to. the current system is a joke, and a terrible one at that.

Yeah unfortunately that is the current situation. There are a lot of instructors that are only in it for money sadly. And some will only teach you to Pass. Albeit it sounding nice cause you will pass. The issue comes when you go solo once you pass. You will still be nervous. And think perhaps you needed more lessons. Not to say all are the same, there are some proper driving school there that teach you by the book. (Literally). They have a syllabus that they follow and tick off once they know you are 100% confident on each modules. And they teach you everything. Not just the test routes. And when you do pass, you will be confident. But yes their syllabus will teach you all but also means its a lot of driving hours (same or more driving hours recommended by DVSA for a learner to do). And that means a lot of money. But then again. Better than the former type of instructor. Even worse is when you learn on modern car with reverse camera and electronic e-brakes with hold assist. Makes everything EASY. Literally. Then you buy your first car and it has the traditional lever Handbrake with no reverse camera. You have to re-learn it yourself!

@@T.K.9 everyone is nervous though the first few times they drive alone, your safety net of an experienced driver is gone and you have to make sure you remember all of the things you've been taught and accept mistakes whether that's the wrong gear, taking the wrong lane etc. I learnt in a car that had a reverse camera and my driving instructor never encouraged me to use it which I rarely did, she had a display map too showing me the speeds 😄 which she caught me peeping at it a few times when she'd ask me what the speed on the road was during lessons 🤭 She was a great teacher though, passed first time with around 20 lessons with her but had spent 40+ hours driving with my mum whilst doing lessons as well.

Clutch control it’s so important, know after I passed test I moved from instructors diesel to my petrol car and struggled with clutch control. My friend’s husband who is a qualified instructor said I needed to go back to basics and recap my clutch control so we did an hour of go, slow, stop and it really helped. First we did that side roads, car parks then moved to slopes and it made me a better driver.

Its cause with Diesel cars, they usually have more torque at low revs. Which is why they are more forgiving. On a petrol car specially the ones with 1.0 Liter engine. They are not as forgiving. And you will stall unless you give it the proper amount of Gas.

Dont always rely on a signal or lack of on a roundabout. People domt alway use. If the persons opposite in the right lane onto the roundabout with no signal and the lane to there left is empty there is a strong chance they are turning right. If possible look at what direction there wheels are pointing and also the direction they are looking. Signals make things a lot clearer and should be used. With practice you will learn other tell fale signs as to what people intend to do. Some nice bits of driving a few tweeks here and there you will improve, your weaknesses will soon improve

It' is quite strange, for a learner driver don't know how to reverse a car, after 30 hours of driving> Back to basic!, Start with the gears and clutch and to use the mirrors before you start off, your instructor should show you and explain, how to reverse the. It's good you know, as it's one of the Manuver, you will have to learn. All the best.👜

He would be on his phone during lessons, didn't let me get out of 2nd gear for 10 lessons (20 hours), would drive me to and back from an area so i'd lose about 40 mins due to him driving, did no roundabouts or manoeuvres . how does it work in england the journey to get your license? because in italy we have a test with 30 question to pass before, where you’re basically tested on the road rules and signs etc. Then you start the driving lessons with your instructor, and you need to do 8 obligatory hours of driving, you can go up to how many hours you need to of course but it’s usually expensive, cause the price for an hour of driving lesson can go up to even 50€ which is a lot. And basically when you’re done with hours of driving you need you do your driving test. But i mean you can actually get your license after just 8 hours of driving, i did 10 and i passed
