What a freaking deal to get a $400 microphone for $135 all in and you're only really out a metal housing and the hi pass and low pass filter thing on the back that nobody uses because everyone is going to DSP that stuff. Amazing, I can only imagine the clarity with audio filters to tune it up. It can probably be done near identical, but the XM800 was actually my favorite sound, it had just the right amount of pop in my ears with clarity. I feel like once it's used in obs with proper gain sounds and audio filtering it can be insane.

    The SM7B had a slightly better high frequency response when compared to the SM58, The SM58 had a darker tone with a reduced high frequency response compared to the SM7B, and the Ultra Voice had a punchier mid range that lacked the lower frequency response of the SM58 or the SM7B. At least that's my impression from the video tests. Such a great little mod DSLR Video Shooter and also what a fantastic use case for 3D printing in general. Awesome video! 💖

    yeah my thoughts exactly. I wonder if the "shortcomings" of the SM58 and the UltraVoice could be remedied with some gentle EQ or if it would mess things up. I think I like the SM7B the most, then the Ultra Voice and last the SM58 - but it's all a VERY close race

  • @patricksharpe

    @patricksharpe

    @@dksouthpawatx It's def close especially when you consider the context of a mix. When we hear these mics tested against each other and nothing else we interpret the differences far easier than we would if we simply heard all three of these mics sitting in their own finalized mixed down projects. Essentially we wouldn't know what we were losing or gaining without a very specific and direct comparison. So a talented engineer could probably get away with using some extremely cheap mics depending on the application.

    It should be noted that the fact that SM58 allows closer proximity to the diaphragm is NOT a flaw. It serves to trigger so-called Proximity effect, where if the source of sound gets close to the diaphragm, there is a sudden build-up of lower frequencies. Singers use this effect to acquire sort of a intimate, smooth voice (usually in verses) which they can use to add emotion to their performance.

    Something to consider that could affect the sound quality under certain conditions. The 3D printed shell and grill were designed as an aesthetic modification, and essentially acts as mic holder. The metal head basket (Grill) on metal microphones are connected to ground from pin 1 on the xlr, shielding the sensitive internal components from EMI and RFI. Removing the head basket from the sm58 means the capsule isn't shielded and no matter how identical the 3D print is to sm7b, it's plastic and can't be grounded. Setting the mic up close to noisy electronic's like power supplies and computers will pick up feed back, same as any large ungrounded metal objects and incoming cell signals. Best bet is keeping the sm58 intact, intall it in the new shell without the plastic grill, and put the sm7b foam over the sm58's grill.

    You shouldn't need to say that, the SM7B is truly bad and inferior to most modern alternatives, there's no technological reason to go for such a limited mic, it's just reputation (mostly made up) and marketing. Which of course will create hordes of sunk cost fallacy'd people that bought it and will become agressive the moment their expensive mic is shown for what it is, an overhyped muffled dynamic mic with a 70yo design.

    As a recording engineer with a background in microphone design - this video, and the comments are absolutley baffling to me. People, please do not waste your time doing this. You're going to introduce some issues by placing your perfectly good SM58 into this housing. If you really hate the look, buy an SM57 + the 'presidential' foam windscreen. You do not need an SM7b for your podcast or whatever you're doing. Every studio I've ever stepped foot in around the planet has always had multiple SM57/8's for a reason. Proudly enjoy them like your favourite musicians do, there's no need to pretend they're something else.

    Thanks for this! Fun project. Curious to try this out myself. Some thoughts on differences between the SM7B and this project: The SM7B is supposed to offer better EMI rejection than most mics, supposedly particularly good for having it close to things like electrically noisy computer monitors. Would be interesting to see how the SM58 compares in this regard. Also, part of the deal with the housing for the SM7B is that it is supposed to offer a degree of anti-shock protection to reduce mechanical noise transmission. Would be nice to hear how things like desk bumps or mount arm bumps translate on the SM7B vs the 3D printed kit. Otherwise, would be nice to see microphone tests where you're using an audio clip/recording played through a quality studio monitor under controlled conditions with a few seconds each of spoken, sung, and instrument samples. Obviously the live voice is good too for things like plosive response, but that level of reproducibility I think would help in teasing out the audio differences more clearly.

I mean yeah this video is great if you have a 3d printer, if you don't it's the same price as a Shure SM7b to get a printer filament and then print the end product and purchase a microphone for it. It’s right from shure and cost about $35 bucks but it fits great and gives amazing wind protection. I believe they use this mic in this setup (pretty sure it’s an sm57 standard) in the White House garden when the president speaks from that location to the public in an address. I guess you could just buy the large Shure windscreen for the 58 as well. Its what I use and I love it, just as good at avoiding plosives and all the other bennies of the SM7B windscreen setup.

    I had excellent results using eSUN PLA PRO in Pine Green Color (My favorite color and filament) I was using the Voxelab Aquila X2 Upgrade, stock everything, stock extruder and base plate. I was able to snag it on sale for $180, highly recommend. I used my standard profile in Cura, 18% infill, 3 line walls, layer height 0.2mm, infill speed 50mm/s, Wall speed 25mm/s, no supports needed for the main two body pieces, and even the mesh part printed surprisingly well. I've had an amazingly easy ride with the Aquilla so far, easy to level and stay level, following some of the amazing setup vids. The eSUN filament prints like a dream, I've also had great luck with all of the Matte Filaments from Overture PLA, in Black, white, and Tan, really beautiful and nice finish right off the printer.

    The SM58 has a transformer in it as a means to increase its output level, which the 7b does not have. That affects the response of the mic, and the amount of gain needed to reach 0db. Also, the enclosure of the 7b is acoustically designed for background noise rejection, and additionally must be made of metal to shield the mic capsule from electromagnetic noise. Removing the grill from the 58 and replacing it with plastic will affect its signal to noise ratio. This mod would be more complete by removing the transformer from the 58 and placing it in a replica 7b enclosure made of metal.

    @@2001mufasa Sort of. I don't think aluminum shields as well as iron does, and the grill needs to be able to shield the capsule also. So coating the inside of it with any kind of foil would be very tedious if you want it to look nice and pick up sound properly. The mod in the video is almost cosmetic only. It does serve the function of making sure you can't get your mouth too close to the capsule though, as noted in the video.

    Out of all the comments, I probably just found the only other audio engineer in this bunch. Trained ears can easily hear the difference in the sound if the mics as well. The boomy nature of the 58 is going to come through once any amount of compression is applied. The 7b also has a larger diaphragm.

  • @RAndrewNeal

    @RAndrewNeal

    @@randomschittz9461 Glad to hear that my knowledge/advice is on par with guys more experienced than I. Though I didn't know that the mic capsules actually had any appreciable difference between them. I thought it was all in the complementary electronics and enclosures. Would the boomy nature still be present if your proximity to the capsule is limited to a minimum (and thereby, the proximity effect)? That does serve as a reminder why it's good to limit the bandwidth of your compression, though. I tend to cut the lows to some degree any time I'm setting up a compressor for vocals.

    It’s an interesting video, but the real question is, other than the “podcaster” or “radio” look of the SM7b, why not just buy an SM57 with the extended windscreen kit instead? It’s been successfully used by Presidents and other high profile people for decades and uses the same Unidyne capsule as the 58 and the 7b. The DIY project seems fun, but unnecessary in a few ways. If you want the project concept then putting a small frame inside of the windscreen with a bit of nylon stocking stretched over it will create an additional pop filter. The SM57 is also less expensive than the SM58.

    listening through KZread compression isn't exactly ideal but as a voice actor and mic nerd here's what I heard through my cans. The SM58 in that enclosure loses a lot go the upper frequency clarity - that air and sparkle that gives a brighter sound is gone. This could possibly be corrected with EQ though maybe at he expense of introducing more signal noise. The little $30 mic obviously lacks any depth but did sound a little better when it was raised up. The SM7b has a much more premium "radio ready" sound but honestly with judicious use of eq and compression I think the SM58 mod could get 90% of the way there at 25% of the price.

    Awesome! Thank you Caleb, You did a great job engineering this mod! So, I dowloaded the 3d printer files (which Caleb offers for free) and went to my local library. The library charged me forty cents for the filament. Because of the limitations on the library's 3d printer the mod I printed did not fit together as well as Caleb's. I still am able to use it and it looks and functions great! I just had to do a little extra work on it. For my other SM58, I purchased the kit from Caleb. I do a podcast with my wife and the SM58s (I have two) sound really good. The grill and foam filter really reduces plosives. My microphones are not on camera, so I did this purely for the audio quality. The SM58 microphone already (out of the box) sounds very similar to the SM7B. If you did not use headphones or a decent pair of speakers you may not be able to tell the difference. This mod (I believe) enhances the sound of the SM58. It may even make the SM58 less susceptible to feedback. If you have a SM58 (or choose to even buy a used one) I don't think you will be disappointed with this mod. If you bought a beat up used SM58, you would not even notice because the whole mic is enclosed. Caleb, thank you once again for your ingenuity and generosity to make the design files available free of charge. James

    Dude... No. Looking similar and sounding similar are separate. The resonate frequencies for one are totally different. It's not just about the capsule which is also affected by the enclosure and build even if they use the same element. Are two cameras the same because they have the same lens? There's a reason one is referred to as a broadcast dynamic and the other a handheld dynamic. Just like how you hand hold a microphone matters for the frequency pickup, the enclosure design affects the sound too. You might as well say that any two microphones are the same if they can screw onto a mic stand.
