3 Ways to the City Center from Lyon Airport: Cheapest Way Cost €2

There are 3 ways to get to the city center of Lyon from the airport. There is no direct shuttle bus to the city center and only one direct Tram service from Rhône Express. This seems strange to me since Lyon is the 3rd biggest city in France. You would think they should have many choices available. Anyway, Rhône Express is the common and popular way to get to the city center though it’s not cheap (€16 for a single ticket).
The easiest and the most expensive way is of course by taxi or private transport. Cost about €50 - €100 depending on the time of the day or which vehicle you use.
The cheapest way is by taking bus 47 and then Tram 3 to get to the city center. It will cost you about € 2. A single ticket costs €1.9 if bought from the ticket machines or €2.2 if bought from the bus driver. It does take more effort, time, and patience since the tram can get very crowded. Additionally, it’s not fun dragging luggages around. However, if you travel light and you have time, why not?

It would be super inconvenient if you only take buses since it will take several buses to get there. According to Google, you can take. Rhône express to Lyon Part Dieu, then take line B towards Gare d’Oullins. Hope this help.

Rhône Express is the easiest way to get to Vaulx-en-Velin - La Soie station, and it takes about 30 minutes or so. Taking buses and train will take a long time. Here is a link of Rhône express site if you are interested: www.rhonexpress.fr/en_GB/timetable. Or you can Google it yourself. Have a good trip!

From Vaulx-en-Velin La soie to Perrache the ride itself is fast, but the walking time and waiting time varies depending on how fast you can find the right place to take the ride and what time frame you are at. Download the Moovit app which will use your location to find the right route and time for you. Google map works too.

Bus 47 at airport, then Tram 3 to the city center. It’s shown at 0:33- 0:40 in the video. You can pause to read the details. As it was mentioned that it would take a little bit more effort but doable, and many locals do it in this way. Have a great trip!

Yes. We did it in May, 2022. If you have a lot of luggage, it would be a little bit hard dragging around. We traveled light, so it wasn’t bad. Bus was not crowded, but tram was quite crowded.

How to validate the bus tickets?

  • @roamingcat7927

There are digital readers to validate the tickets on buses. I bought my ticket on the bus. According to online information: “The on-board ticket, sold individually on buses, is valid for one journey on the bus on which it was purchased. It is not possible to connect to another bus or tram, nor to any other mode of transport.”

It varies depending on many factors: traffic, timing, transfer time, or different methods etc. I would give 1.5 hour to 2 hours if take buses and tram. Express is faster and easier, but more expensive obviously.
