The way you painted up that regular warrior and made him into a captain blew me away. Really impressive how much he stands out purely with a paint job, no special base, no unique pose, just paints. Kind of has me thinking it would be cool to participate in a big Battle Companies campaign and do what you did with that captain, progressively bling out your guys more and more every time they do something noteworthy on the battlefield. Really awesome video.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
That would be such a good idea! You could do something with wargear as the campaign goes on but also amend the paint job too - which would make an awesome and unique story for the individual miniatures as you play more games :) I have some notes for a follow up video on these chaps which will be later down the line, as Minas Tirith was my Christmas onwards army, but with the new release of the box set - i'm bringing that forward a touch! :):)
Oh that wood grainโฆ.such a texture, simple and effective! ๐๐ผ
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thank you kindly!! I like simple and effective, that way i can get more accomplished haha :):)
Although you gave the first miniature more time, the second I like more. I like the Drybrush-Technique, cus it brings a Battleworn-Look to the miniature. I like it a lot, as I like it in the films!
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Glad to see that you like the second style, and totally agree it has that battle worn look to them :) Well I do like to show a couple different ways just to fit as much as I can into these videos :) I have a plan for the second technique but Iโm going to need a lot of troops for it. I may have to do a Gondor calls for aid, and see if anyone would be willing to kindly donate some unwanted and unloved unpainted troops!
You have easily become my favourite miniatures channel. Your videos are very well put together, all the information you provide is super helpful, well articulated and at an easy to follow pace. The editing is great too. You're also bloody good at painting!!
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
oh wow thank you so much for the kind words! :) I just try to make the videos that i would have liked to see when i was getting into miniature painting, plus it just gives me another outlet of helping others on their hobby journey too :):) And on top of that, I really love painting minis and making videos so it's a win win really haha! Is there anything that you would like to see on the channel in the future? :):)

@@SwordsandBrushes I was desperate to find a video on horses AND one for cloaks and you've nailed those so I'm kind of stumped on what to see next. Your video on the Army of the dead was really cool, I liked the non-box art approach to the army as it looked kick ass! Something I might say would be really cool to see would be doing free-hand techniques. I'm hopeless with it anyway as my hand shakes too much but it would be cool to see the amazing banners you can come up with
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
I do need to do a horse part two video and cover some more ways and colour schemes! Free hand would be an interesting one, im sure there must be a banner or something in the unpainted collection that can be my guinea pig haha I did a fun little horsey on the back of Helm Hammerhand not too long ago which i liked :)
Wow! Came for some tips to paint my Battlebox and this helped a lot! I especially loved the woodgrain effect (it looked like a nice wooden table) and the captain conversion!
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Oh nice how are you coming along with your box set so far? They are such good value! I feel like i need the Rohan one in my life at some point! :):)
@christianoneil7655
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
@@SwordsandBrushes I didn't start them yet, I had some Riders of Rohan that needed bases which I did for the first time. I'm planning on combining both forces so I can play Merry and Pippin together in an army with basic troops.
Really nice results and good video. Love the back part of th shields. Such a natural look!
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thank you very much! I try to tinker with the videos and add extra stuff where I can. Still learning but I think Iโm finding my style that I like to do :) After doing that shield, Iโm looking at the rest of my troops and going - damn I need to do it on all of them now. Luckily Iโve only got about 30 troops so far haha
Great video for quickly painting armor! Using this for some Kings of Wars knights.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
oh nice!!! please do let me know how it goes! I keep looking at kings of war as a little side project quest - the undead look really cool - and i really REALLY want that Giant kit in the range!!!!!!! :)
Loving the gold on the main guy.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
ah yes Captain Chris! Thank you kindly, he deserves it i think - not all brave Minas Tirith warriors can take down a Mordor Troll and live to tell the tale - so he got the promotion! haha :):)
Really like your videos! One of my fav channels

ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thank you kindly, hopefully the 3 styles in one video didn't seem to drag and it was informative enough. I will probably try it again on a future video, i mean i do have 8 Ents on my desk right now...
Love these, keep up the good work
@SwordsandBrushes

Great options for different times and standards, and no shocking last minute edge highlight either
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
You got to love an edge highlight now and again :) But thank you, I tried something a bit different with this video and did the multiple methods - takes a bit longer but i think the extra info is worth it :):)
Astonishing how good they look! I enjoyed the whole video and I'll try the first method for the miniatures. Btw, the wood effect of the back part of the shield is so good! Which is your favourite method of these two? What will your next video be about? Thanks a lot for your effort and inspiration!
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thank you kindly! I just finished another batch and have about 15 to go in the backlog of wonders :) The annoying thing is, after i upgraded the Captain to have that wooden shield, I decided to do it for the rest of my troops haha I like to do the first method, but i have an idea for what i will do with the second method - but i think i'm going to need a lot of troops for it! Good question, i have a 'to do list' which I select from - Ive narrowed it down for the next video to be either... Morannon Orcs, Elves, Ents, the next Fellowship member, a Fellbeast or Rangers - i think i'm going to need to roll a dice! haha
Really nice video :) Thanks alot for sharing! :D love the metal on these bad boys
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thanks very much! Which one did you like the most? The first longer winded one or the quicker drybrush to get them done look?

@@SwordsandBrushes Tbh. i like all equal :D ! as long as its table top standard its really nice from a far! So the extra time is really nice for watching closely but i kinda feel like their amazign in both their way. and really makes me wanna paint up some LOTR minis. i only got some goblins from LOTR :)) The one with the goblin king
I love your videos, can't wait for the one on the haradrim warriors ๐๐

Good work!

ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ

I really like your painting style and the way you explain your process. Would love to see your take on some rohan warriors to go with the horses.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thank you so much ๐ I'm glad to hear that i come across that way, i try not to make the videos too long but then i don't want to make them seem rushed so its hard to follow - so hopefully i'm getting the balance of both :) Your wish will be granted! I don't think Rohan will e much longer as i am workign on them as my main army this year and have both the Pelennor and the battlehost boxes built and ready to go! :):) So there should be a few Rohan videos coming up in the near future :):)

PR122 magenta + PY74 yellow = peach. Peach + PW4 zinc white makes a transparent highlight colour which can build up over a few layers to make a seamless flesh highlight.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
oo thats an interesting one!! Thank you for sharing with us all. That could be a fun idea to do sometime :)
Awesome. I just started painting these with the Pelennor Fields set. This is going to be my go to channel for LOTR's painting. These results are so good. I would like to check out the Morannon Orc video but I don't see it in your video list, maybe its just me heh
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thank you so much, thats very kind of you to say :) I hope that you are getting through your collection nicely? :) Yes i forgot to put a "coming soon" box at the end of the video, it definitely is on the cards, as they are on my paint table! :)
I have been using your content to paint my armies after around 12 years away from all this and, oh boy, it does make a difference! Iโm enjoying like a kid! May I suggest that in future videos, together with the paint you are using, also adding what brush you used for it? It would be personally really helpful since Iโm still struggling with brush sizes :)
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
oh that is amazing to hear! Thank you very much, but also it really does please me and puts a smile on my face when people enjoy painting miniatures and are proud of them :) And yes that is a really good idea, i know just how i can do that, so i will try to add that into the next long video format like this one. Thank you for the idea to make the videos better :):)
I was getting hyped for the paint tutorial on the Morannon Orcs, but I cant find the video! I guess you havent uploded the video yet, even tho announcing it at the end of the video? :P
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
It's coming! these longer version videos take about 4 days to make so i try to fit them in around my day job. Maybe one day if i'm fortunate enough i could do this full time and i can do more at a quicker release :) I will hope to make a start on it towards the back end of next week. :):)
I'd really appreciate a tutorial on Warriors of Rohan and/or Riders of Rohan one day!

@@SwordsandBrushes this is exciting! I just ordered Eowyn & Merry and some Riders of Rohan as my first MESBG minis! Your painting tutorials are fantastic and I'm looking forward to see what you do with some Rohan minis! I'll hold off painting mine until I can see you expertly tackle them! ๐
Great video. The basecoat in leadbelcher and then highlining with a drybrush will how I will paint them. Fast but still great looking. Any chance to get a ranger video up? Would be amazing.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Thank you! Minas Tirith is one of my favourite to paint and it was a pleasure to put the video together to share with others :) Yes Rangers are on my list, i have a couple Rohan ones id like to do sooner rather than later and then from there - i just pick from the list! :)
I wonder whether, Jackson notwithstanding, black boots are actually appropriate for medieval(ish) soldiers.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
sure why not, just a leather boot :)
Great video. Iโm just about to start getting back into miniatures after a break of 30 years lol. If Iโm looking to start my paint collection to paint middle earth stuff is there a starter set I can get or better to get the paints individually?
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
oh fantastic news, welcome back! :) How come the long break? There are a variety of starter paint sets as well as larger sets out there. For me and these videos i use Army painter and they have quite a number of sets to get you going. Depending on price, something like the "Wargames stater set" is great as it has a few colours and a brush. amzn.to/3XTO4BG And also a larger set the "Mega paint set" which has a lot more paints in there amzn.to/3Ds0E2G (looks like this is on offer at the moment too - so great value!) Hope that helps a bit! :):)
@kristianbooth6262
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
@@SwordsandBrushes thanks very much for the reply and help. Really kind of you. Yeah the reason for the break was spare time (lack of) and kids ๐คฃ. Looking forward to getting back into it but have to admit to feeling a bit daunted as the miniatures are a lot smaller than I remembered, or that could be because I was younger and smaller back then ๐ฌ
Do you think you can make a tutorial of such a wood effect like you did for the captain here in a green scheme for Rohan? I think their shields are really dull and already tried a wood effect myself but I was not that happy with it
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
I think that will be a great idea! I do need to paint some Rohan soon, i would love to make that video before Christmas if i can squeeze it in :)
Would it be possible to have a list of the paints used in the description on these videos? Would be very handy.
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Yes thats a very good idea! - I think i will do that in a pinned comment so that it will be easy to find and not clutter up the description :)
Do you have any recommendations for speed basing these miniatures?
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
You can do the old sand and paint method, for a slightly quicker result some textured paint would work well also. Im working on a short video today which can be used for Minas Tirith and that will have a cobbled street look to it :)
Hy mate, is an uruk hai painting guide a possible option
@SwordsandBrushes
ะัะป ะฑาฑััะฝ
Absolutely! Its on the list of my to do's, and i've got probably more Uruk Hai in my backlog than anything else - so that will also be a fun project to get stuck into! :):)
Basecoat better white or black?
@SwordsandBrushes
3 ะฐะน ะฑาฑััะฝ
I tend to go with black for the vast majority, i just like the way paint goes on it afterwards. White i tend to go with if i will paint something bright, but it's fairly rare.
At 10:47 .. there is no brown on the belt / sword .. then 10:50 there is brown.. which colour is this please? thanks
@SwordsandBrushes

The brown is the same colours as the first miniature that was painted - so it was Oak Brown to basecoat them :)
