3 Ways to Overcome Anxiety | Olivia Remes | TEDxKlagenfurt
The way life and love are portrayed to us via the world of advertising and Hollywood dream factories, you’d have thought that there’s no grey area between happy and troubled relationships. The truth, however, is that how we get along with each other is a complex, multi-dimensional thing that is likely to be impacted by anxious thoughts or phobias as any other aspect of life. In fact, most people encounter anxiety at some point in their lives, but for some, it can be a crippling condition. Olivia Remes teaches us about the ways to overcome anxiety, and the importance of learning to treat ourselves as someone we love. Olivia completed her Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge. Her research focuses on anxiety disorders and is using the European Prospective Investigation of Cancer study, one of the largest, European cohort studies looking at chronic diseases, mental health, and the way people live their lives. Her research has been featured by the BBC, Forbes magazine, and USA Today, and she has appeared on several radio shows and podcasts talking about anxiety and the impact that it can have on people’s lives. Olivia is the creator and host of The Cambridge Talk Show, a weekly radio show focusing on lifestyle matters and mental health. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

What I’ve learned after 6 years of chronic anxiety is to just do what you love and get on with your life. I no longer have panic attacks or feel anxious and I’m off SSRI. There’s no guarantees in life so make every day count. You may say but how? I say to the intrusive thoughts “oh not you again, I’ve heard that a thousand times before and it got me nowhere. I’ll do my own thing thank you. Goodbye.”

I always love coming into the comment section because you feel less alone and realize alot of people are dealing with the same thing, its a comforting environment and i wish people would be able to speak about this comfortably with randome interactions .. like , you can see someone at the grocery store beside you and they are probably going through something similar , but you wont know until you start the conversation. That could literally be your new bestfriend 😅
It took all my happiness, love and everything. Anxiety is the biggest enemy.

I used to have horrible social anxiety which started from bullying as a kid. I didn't know that's what i had until i watched this video. I overcame it when I was in college when I constantly went out to clubs and house parties filled with people. They all greeted me with a hug and were so kind to me I saw that it was all in my HEAD!!! You really do have to FACE your worst FEAR in order to prove to your BRAIN that it was all in your head. I sent this to my mom cuz she has horrible anxiety. Mom are you watching this I'll know if you didn't watch it if you don't see my comment lol. I'll wait.

I think some people don’t really understand anxiety , I mean the feeling of taking my shirt off shaking so hard I feel like I’m gonna bruise from the inside out , holding my hand on my heart , pulling over on a highway cause I can’t focus feeling like I’m gonna flat out die . Not weather or not a group of people like me , I fn wish , good luck to all who deal with ANXIETY.

So true
I believe one of the best ways to overcome anxiety is through social giving, especially when the need is great and when the aid you provided would not have been done if not for you. I would suggest a week long trip to a recent large scale disaster like travelling to Puerto Rico shortly after hurricane Maria for example and to simply dedicate your time to helping others during your trip as purely and selflessly as possible. Being surrounded by those that have lost everything has a wonderful way of reminding us of what is really valuable in life and often in a life-changing way. :D

I started crying like 10 times because I realized I have anxiety disorder. This video helped me tho.
We are all soo strong for living with this and still fighting it everyday!!! Keep at it!!
I always knew I had anxiety but it wasn’t until today that I realized how bad it was. I had my first anxiety attack today and I was alone when it happened. It felt like I had to force myself to take in oxygen and I didn’t know what was happening until I went to my mom. She told me what was going on and said to breathe in 7 sec, hold 4, and then breathe out 6. I felt better and then we sat down and talked. I’m still terrified about what had happened, but after talking to someone it got better. If your experiencing anything like what I experienced, don’t try to figure out how to make it go away on your own, go ask for help. Just breathe.
I agree with all the things that she said...it's a great help for people suffering from anxiety....anxiety is an epidemic that needs to be addressed...thanks for sharing this video. it means a lot!

Another good video from Olivia - very relatable in my current situation. So many others have spoken about anxiety, but I hadn't heard it put like this before. It's information that seems to be helping me so far, thanks again Olivia 👍
Thank You for this wonderful talk, I was starting to think it will never go away.
I just want to thank you for this conversation. I've been struggling with anxiety for years now, struggling to overcome it. I've made some progress and a considerable amount of self reflection. I say all that to say, I'm glad I've finally come to a place where I can receive your message. As I listened you helped me to see that I'm still in a place of constant fear of what I can't control and that it translates when I try to achieve goals. After listening and realizing how poisoned my thinking is, that I live expecting the absolute worse to happen... it did something for me. The next day I said, no I can't do that anymore especially with no good reason. And it has stuck. Thank you for sharing.
Extremely wonderful talk from the point of view of a Healer. Negative comments on such amazing talks worries me more about the condition of a completely asleep, unempathic, and disastrously misguided world that people like Olivia and many Healers are working at transforming.
@slavkolinic6713

The negative comments aren't coming from empathic people, they're coming from people that actually deal with these things because the solutions she proposed to stop being anxious is basically don't be anxious anymore, 1st advice is absolutely horrible and will cause you to lose the little friends you have, the 2nd is just paradoxical while the 3rd is basically telling people who hate themselves that the solution to that problem is loving themselves
she has a very good understanding of the problem and her solutions are effective
I appreciate lot your speech on anxiety .you look so confident and your way of presenting had impacted me very positively
Clearly understand your speech all of you because your way of presenting is good..Thank you
Very good speech. Thank you. I am impressed by your calm and strenghful presence.
What i've learnt through comments is that people have their own way to overcome this.but definitely this speech might have been helpful to 99% ❤
I love the way she speaks soooooo soothing
But being a Muslim, i have an advantage of having Quran by my side and because of that I am always hopeful, even while suffering from anxiety 💖... But yes other points are helpful for me✨💜
Thank you Olivia and Ted for this talk!
We all will pass this , stay focused on your gut feeling and follow it and allow you to guide yourself, with anxiety we even feel scared and worried about that voice that is telling us the truth and what we need to do and it can be scary (because its a step out of our comfort zone) but once you get used to that uncomfortable feeling , this gut feeling will become your reality . Stick to what you believe and dont allow the negative intrusive thoughts get to you. Easier said than done but progress and step by step everyday is worth it ❤️
It's creepy how well she described Anxiety
Authenticity is a great idea, and being around people who are kind. Sounds helpful to me. :)
I don't know how to say thanks 🙂 I don't have words to express myself for this. It all saved me. It all protected me. After going throughout this, it all changed me.
I think all points made were absolutely correct. On the outside I am an ambassador for positivity, at least to pass on to others. However on the inside, it can be crushing.
One likely reason she is speaking so slowly and clearly is that she knows not everyone listening is a native English speaker. I’ve heard her in other talks and she doesn’t always come across this way. Either way, what she says here is very helpful.
I had seen this video exactly 4 years ago and I remember the first 2 mins feeling like my life story. I am seeing this now again and I can say few things got better. There is hope❤

Sometimes anxiety will attack you because of a situation that happen time ago. My wife passed thru a difficult phase and she got over it . In that time being I started to get worried and it voided me to get depression. After 6 months u been getting anxiety now and then.last Monday I got a panic attack felt like if I was dying. I will get better I trust god and I feel that this is just a Rick in my way to stop me from growing but not going to happen. Thank you for this video ♥️

Yes, as it turns out the solution to anxiety is to stop being anxious, she really is a genius
Not a very helpful Ted Talk. I am a clinician that treats Anxiety all the time. I have also worked through my own clinical level of anxiety. She built up how terrible anxiety can feel, but then gave luke warm solutions that only apply to social anxiety. In fact her explanation of anxiety was quite anxiety provoking. Anxiety is fear gone wild. Through healthy self talk, self care, disputing and replacing irrational beliefs; one can become free of anxiety. It's by reducing the "big deal" that anxiety tricks you into believing that we become free. It is by letting go. It is by taking courage. The message for those with anxiety is one of hope. Don't go believing that you are harming your heart by being anxious, that will only make It worse. That is BS. Believe you can conquer. Believe you can heal. Believe you can be calm. Learn to meditate. Learn the concept of non-attachment. Build your spiritual center. Anxiety is common and treatable. Anxiety is won in the heart and mind ultimately.

Anxiety is really nothing more than misperception, taking everything personally and limiting oneself personally by over reaction... as you say trapped in a state of needless fear. We have to realize that mind and body are one... not the same but one. The body has to be strong for the mind to function as it should, with clarity and precision. So often the body is neglected, diet is essential to wholeness, just as imagination is to creating a future worth embracing.
