I wish I'd get jury duty. I'm so jealous of Yall. 😭 I've been registered to vote since I was 18 and I'm 41 and have never gotten summoned. Also, no I don't have a criminal record and have never been arrested so I don't know why they invite everyone else in my family except me. Totally not fair.

My uncle, who is a lawyer, said jury selection 101 is getting rid of people with advanced degrees because they make decisions for themselves and are not easily swayed.

My grandpa was actually called in for jury duty last week and right before it started he got dismissed because he was “staring to hard and suspiciously at the defendant”. In reality he had fallen a few days before and was in a lot of pain on the hard uncomfortable seats. It’s was hilarious when he was telling it to me bc he felt bad and wasn’t trying to signal out the accused

I've been selected twice, shown up, sat in the waiting room for HOURS, and been sent home both times because the case was settled instead. Such an honorable experience for like 30$ pay when it cost me 500$ regular pay to take time off. Thanks for the 'honor' of struggling to pay for food that month. Its equally, if not MORE dishonest to call jury duty honorable. Its forced, its uncomfortable, you may have to see things you never wanted to see or make life altering decisions for people, it may (like in my case) cause you severe financial difficulty.

It's an outdated system from 1215 (Magna Carta). It literally falls under our own government's definition of forced labor and actually hurts the jury system. A voluntary system with term limits in place, proper compensation, and aid in the form of comfort, transportation, etc.. would be more beneficial to the jury system and justice system as a whole.

Bit late on the reply here but; I believe in most states you can be reimbursed for any work day pay you were owed on top of juror pay. Just sounds like a free meal(s) and extra cash for a different work day to me.

@@extremecanilstone22 I don't know what state you're from, lol but my state, California, offers something like $12 I'm not entirely sure on the exact amount. But it was something like that. Plus something to the effect of $0.30 per mile that you have to drive. Either way it's an absurdly low amount of money, considering the amount of time and effort that you have to put into it. The only people I know that get paid for attending jury duty, is government employees. Teachers, mailman, state employees as well. But if your privately employed, or own your own business, your S out of luck.

My first summons I had *JUST* lost my job. I actually *was* counting on the 12 dollars (or whatever) a day. :D (we were dismissed without even going to jury selection)

I just kept twitching my leg uncontrollably and making disturbing/annoying bodily movements. When they finally asked what's wrong, I told them I have severe social anxiety and I was just gonna be like this the whole time. They dismissed me shortly after.

I got out of jury duty for telling the judge the reason I was there was cause I had no choice it’s either show up or get fined. Especially in the part where they ask you why you “decided” to go to jury duty which you don’t your forced to go. Haven’t been summoned since 😂

@@itssLaury just be bias towards the law and you’ll never get called again. If you get picked they’ll take you to a different location with the others that got picked and that’s when you just answer questions that they ask you. Do not show interest in the questions give short answers and you’ll be fine. They pick 30 per group, at least where I’m from, and then they pick the 12 from that 30 that they need for the jury. So if you get picked don’t panic it doesn’t mean that’ll you’ll be part of the jury on the first call up.

Sort of. You are supposed to be DISinterested, which is different from being UNinterested. The logic behind "no experts" -- take it as you may -- is that such a person might be able to unduly influence the deliberations. A more likely reason is that if someone actually IS knowledgable, he/she might not be readily bamboozled by whichever lawyer was hoping to dazzle the jury. [This was the basis of an episode of the Jack Klugman TV show "Quincy." Jack played a medical examiner and was repeatedly admonished by the judge not to "educate" his fellow jurors on the flaws in a flimsy case. (He did so anyway).]

My History teacher got jury duty early in the day, and the next day he came back and said “If you never want to be on a jury, just give an answer that doesn’t make sense” He the followed it up with “When they asked me what i did for a living, i wasn’t paying attention and responded ‘6 o’clock’ thinking they asked what time I got to work. They told me to leave”

When I went to jury duty I did something Similar to get out of it. They asked us to write down any reason we may not be able to participate like if we had responsibilities we had to attended to. Well I misspelled very possible word that I could. And when the judge got to mine , she didn’t even read it allowed like everyone else’s and told me I’m dismissed

​@@thaddeuscramer2312you can still serve. I've got PTSD, OCD, GAD, ADHD, ASD, and was totally fine serving as long as it wasn't a case with a lot of gore. (Oddly, my alphabet soup of diagnosis makes me an excellent juror. I can hyperfocus on details, am very justice driven, and am really good at reading people and sniffing out BS...plus my whole career involves analyzing data without personal bias). I couldn't have handled a murder trial. But fortunately most cases are way more low-key than that. The first time I was summoned, my group never got called to the court room. The second time, I ended up on a low-key civil case. They generally indicate at a high level what the trial is about before selection. So if the type of case is something particularly triggering for you, you can talk to the judge if your number is called and they'd likely dismiss you. Typically only a small fraction of the whole jury pool actually ends up getting selected. Tldr; yes you can still serve as long as it doesn't stand in your way of being fair and impartial or stand in your way of carrying out the duties of being a juror.

This is so true! I once got summoned for an 8 week trial that required me to be on 4 times a week, it would of crippled me in terms of money, but some how I did not get picked. If I were picked then my backup would be my savings.but most people do not and live from paycheck to paycheck, so I can understand how much it would hurt them.

I know there are exceptions if there would be financial hardship from not getting paid. Legally your job is required to give you the time off for jury duty, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to be paid time off

I've been summoned three times as a juror. The last time was for a drug posession case. I told the judge that I felt our drug laws were unjust and that I couldn't be an unbiased juror as a result. They sent me on my way.

But 12 angry men is literally about a trial and the jury meeting amd one brave juror actually speaks their peace and makes the rest of the jury actually analyze the evidence in tne case instead of just throwing out a guilty verdict. The person on trial was a poor Mexican kid that really didn't have the capabilities, nor the disposition to commit the heinous crime of which he stood accused, but the other jurors were ready to say he was guilty because of their racism.

The movie has basically every range of juror. From the one who just wants it to be over so he can go watch a baseball game, to the one just going with what everyone else thinks, to the people who do consider the evidence and think he is guilty at first, but change their mind.

When I took a Criminology class in college we were taught that only about 20% of people actually show up for their jury summons. What REALLY happens to people who now-show? How much effort and money do we spend trying to enforce jury summons? I dutifully reported for jury duty just a year after being in the same courtroom, testifying against a man who attacked, robbed, and then screamed death threats at me while he was being arrested. They issued a protective order for me because he had seen my address while in possession of my purse and wallet. I had to move. In the middle of my grueling time on the stand, the trial was halted and declared a mistrial because the defense attorney discovered a discrepancy between the value of the items stolen as written on the documents from the night of the crime and my testimony. Because some idiot wrote my purse was stolen, not my purse “and its contents” were stolen. HOW SHOULD THAT BE REQUIRED TO BE EXPLICITLY SPECIFIED? Well, that discrepancy changed the type of theft charge, and they threw the whole goddamn thing out. Even though the prosecutor talked with me after talking with the jury and told me they were going to convict, they believed me, and that I was an ideal witness up against an aggressive defense attorney, I was DEVASTATED. She told me he was also almost certainly still going to be sent to prison for two entirely separate crimes he was soon going to trial for, one being selling crack, another being domestic violence (yes he wanted jury trials for all of these.) Being back in that courtroom during voir dire was suddenly extremely upsetting for me and I had a panic attack. I sat there sobbing and choking, but they wouldn’t stop the proceedings, someone just gave me a tiny cup of water. I struggled to get it together until finally the judge called me up to the bench asked what the heck was up. I told him why I was upset, and he dismissed me then and there. That very evening, HE CALLED ME. He’d looked up my name, then looked up my case, saw exactly what had happened, also got my cell phone number from there, and called me to tell me that indeed, my attacker had gone to prison for many many years. (I’ve never tried to look up anything else about him, though I think my brother STILL keeps an eye on his arrests and time in an out of jail and/or prison, 20 years later.) The judge also said that if I ever got a jury summons again, call his office and he’ll get me excused so I don’t even have to come down to the courthouse. I’ve only call for his help once. And he was true to his word. I just got a jury summons. That kind judge is long since retired, but I’m going to get a medical exemption, either through my neurologist or my psychiatrist. It may be an honor to be on a jury, and it’s our civic duty, but I’m not going down there to suffer through thinking I’m going to die right there in my seat from my heart exploding while everyone in the courtroom tries to just ignore me. I’ve never been so scared in my life as when I dragged into the stairwell and attacked, but that trial being halted and him actually getting off on a technicality felt very near like being victimized again, after I’d fought so hard against that defense attorney trying to trip me up, twist my words, insinuate bad things about me, and generally make me look like a liar and a moron, while the man who hurt me and threatened to kill me was just feet away.

Good for you man. Our system may have its flaws but it's good to at least have an interest in it.

I’ve been called up for jury duty once in my life. My mail was going to my sisters and she’d open important looking mail as I was deployed. She called and said I was deployed. Lady said nope don’t matter he needs to show up. My sister emailed me the details and I emailed explaining i was deployed “nope still need to show up” I got a letter from the legal officer stating from the desk of the commanding officer of the uss jcs he is deployed and will not be at jury duty “nope still needs to show up” I finally replied look lady you send a plane to pick me up in the middle of whatever ocean I’m in and I’ll show up. She replied with some stuff about how they’ll issue a bench warrant. I just ignored her and never did anything further with it.

@@mycelia_ow no, but if you lie to get on jury, THEN do that its perjury which is illegal. Essentially during jury selection you'll be asked questions like "if I prove he did it, will you find him guilty" and you can just say no. That's VERY boiled down but essentially how it goes

It should be illegal for the jury to be decided by the prosecutors and defendants. They basically get to dismiss people they 'think' won't help their case. That's called rigging a jury.

I thought I had a good chance to get on a jury and then they elicited some very real feelings I didn't think I had with regard to our justice system (I know someone who got a very raw deal but thought I was over it). They drew it out of me and promptly dismissed my biased butt.

I was summoned but told them about my severe depression and ADHD. I expressed concern that having this may distract me preventing a fair trial. I wasn't contacted after that.

Last time I showed up for jury duty the first question the judge asked was if anyone had a legitimate reason to not serve to please come forward. All those who came forward were dismissed without further questions. It was pure honor system.

I was sent a letter for Jury Duty. I was stationed in South Korea at the time. I didn't have to go to Jury Duty.

Just say “jury nullification” and they’ll send you on your way.

Well, saying “Jury Nullification” outright actually could get you in trouble, so the best way to word it is something like this. “Even if the defendant is without a doubt guilty but I don’t agree with the law they’re being prosecuted for, I will not say that they are guilty.”

Moylan, the Court affirmed the concept of jury nullification, but upheld the power of a court to refuse to permit an instruction to the jury to this effect. In 1972, in United States v. Dougherty, the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit issued a ruling similar to Moylan that affirmed the de facto power of a jury to nullify the law but upheld the denial of the defense's chance to instruct the jury about the power to nullify. In 1988, the Sixth Circuit upheld a jury instruction: "There is no such thing as valid jury nullification." In United States v. Thomas (1997), the Second Circuit ruled that jurors can be removed if there is evidence that they intend to nullify the law. The Supreme Court has not recently confronted the issue of jury nullification. In 2017, a jury was instructed: "You cannot substitute your sense of justice, whatever that means, for your duty to follow the law, whether you agree with it or not. It is not for you to determine whether the law is just or whether the law is unjust. That cannot be your task. There is no such thing as valid jury nullification. You would violate your oath and the law if you willfully brought a verdict contrary to the law given to you in this case." The Ninth Circuit upheld the first three sentences of the jury's instruction and overruled the remainder but deemed that instruction a harmless error and affirmed the conviction.

My dad was denied Jury Duty one time because he legitimately knew too much about the topic that the guy comitted the crime (he worked in the field), so it was percieved that he would be too bias.

Lying that you wouldn't have an intent but do, os perjury. Ultimately, if you mention it with respect and honesty in the court, you can not be charged for knowing a law, just as a lawyer can not be charged for misattributing a law.

One time I was called for Jury Duty and the judge asked if there was any reason we couldn't serve on that case. I raised my hand, and the judge asked why not. I said "Well, my brother is a drug dealer and that's the guy who supplies him." We all got excused.

It's not a good idea to say that because you could be found in contempt of court. There are other ways to get out of jury duty, randomly standing up and saying "jury nullification" isn't a good way,

I worked graveyard when I got summoned. I kept falling asleep while the lawyers were picking the jurors because i'd been up 24 hours. They didnt ask me to sit on the jury.

Yep, that's a concern for my husband and I. We both have hourly pay nightshift jobs. Sure we could technically be there but with our sleep schedule plus we're both ADHD.... yeah right would we be able to serve jury duty.

my dad got summoned for jury duty once, and he said he wasn't going, so they called his home phone and he explained he still wasn't going, they responded with something like "sir its a service to your country" and my dad (an air force vet) said "screw you i already served my country" they then explained that they could arrest him for not going, and he said "come find me then" and hung up. they never came looking for him

The only time I ever got called for jury duty, I very loudly explained to the potential juror next to me how the heart monitor I have to wear 24/7 works and that if my heart rate reaches a certain point, it makes a loud beeping noise and alerts my emergency contacts. I was pregnant and I got jury duty I wrote back saying I was having a hard time and thought my son would come early he did and they still didn't excuse me I just ignored them I legit was in the hospital with a premature baby

If you didnt file documentation with the court showing your medical status there is still a likely hood you could face contempt charges.

An honor getting payed practically nothing to attend? I just said that I would vote no, no matter what. My supervisor told me to say that I hate black but the dude is racist for reals. The one that I used was something that I learned in social studies back in HS.

I actually look forward to serving on a jury. I am 40 but never had the chance. The first time I was called I was in the National Guard and we where on a humanitarian mission in Thailand. The second time my summons was lost in the mail and I didn’t get it until it was too late. I moved states right before covid so I was unable to switch my drivers license for awhile so I may have been called again but never got my summons. I am a disabled veteran so I have the time and have always been interested in the legal system. I spent some time in juvenile detention as a kid and my sister was kidnapped and S/Ad and the idiot stopped and got cigarettes using a credit card with my sister tied up in the truck so he was easy to catch so I have definitely seen the inside of a court room.

I knew a homeschooling mom of 10 who was summoned for jury duty, she took all her children with her to the interview, and said she hoped to be a juror as it would help her teach her children about the American legal system. She wasn't called back. Not sure if it was her enthusiasm or all the kids 🤔 😂

Remember everyone. The jury is the ultimate decider of facts of the case. That means all facts of the case. Just because someone is guilty doesn’t mean you have to find them guilty. Jury nullification is a legal thing and has been used for both good and bad. Like when convicted slaves were found not guilty for running away to the north. But also on the other hand lynch mobs who killed people down south were also jury nullified. So just remember that you are the court and you can make a massive difference in someone’s life.

@@Liberator1917 you’ll be asked in a somewhat roundabout way if you believe in nullification and won’t let you on unless you answer that you don’t. If you try to nullify then you can be prosecuted for perjury.

Yeah, I had one occasion where I got a letter, and I was selected for jury duty, which I wasn’t very pleased about because I was losing money by being there that day. So I went ahead and made arrangements with my employer, and then the day of the hearing it was canceled because they settled out of court. Never again.

@@madestmadhatter That's normally a sign of "out of court settlement." That or charges were dropped, one of the two. Either way, the entire ordeal was settled, without the need of a court.

I was sent to jury duty, but I wasn’t aware I couldn’t bring my phone with me… it wasn’t written on the summons to go I got. So, I had to hide it in the bushes outside since I walked there. I decided give the impression that I hate police (okay, I generally am not their biggest fan, but I exaggerated how I felt), I think the justice system is a joke (it is. But it’s better than not having one is some cases), and that I was going to side with the defendant regardless of what evidence was presented to me (I wasn’t going to do that…). And the defense wanted me while the prosecution told me to fuck off and go home. I took a bunch of Juror stickers on the way out and sometimes wear them near the area and see if I can troll the news with bullshit information about cases that I completely made up.

The last time I was called into jury duty, I walked in the courtroom and realized that there was no way that I would be in this trial. The arresting officer was a friend from highschool and the defendant was a regular customer at a business where I used to work. Best way of getting out of jury duty - living in a small town. 👍

My science teacher in 7th grade had the best answer to get out of jury duty When they ask if you’ve ever broken the law say yes, if they ask you when the last time that was say this morning you j-walked 😂 people don’t tend to want you as a juror after that

I got paid $10 a day to be on jury duty. I can kind of see why people try to avoid it.

I actually got called once for jury duty but was moving out of state when I got the notice so I didn’t have to go. Kind of want to experience it honestly

Oh, it’s an honor to be on jury duty? But if you don’t show up, they’ll throw you in jail.

When I was about 20 or so I got a jury duty summons, it absolutely mortified me. I have horrible social anxiety and fear of crowded places. I had to get my psychiatrist to write them a letter saying I was unfit for jury duty. I literally would have agreed with anything and said anything to get whatever trial over with so I could run back home and cry (as I usually did during social events/obligations). I was ultimately excused from jury duty. But during those couple months trying to get out of it, I did not sleep, it truly was terrifying to me.

That would be me if I was summoned. There is absolutely no way I will ever do Jury duty. I believe in prison reform and I don't feel comfortable participating in a very flawed system. And I don't want to be traumatised by a case

@@cccddd321 basically much like any country, judges can be corrupt and laws can be unfair. So it is up to the jury to bridge the gap between the letter of the law and what is fair and just,

Let me place a comment here. This will be my reminder to me in my worst days. That there are people out there that have it wayyyy worse than me at least I don’t cry or breakdown to the thought of social interactions. Thank you I feel better about myself now.

The fact that the American judicial system asks members of the public to attend in deciding the fate of another person is weird. Why not just hire a team of people educated in that particular field instead of recruiting Joe Schmoe off the street?
