Thank you!! I have a 3 way switch in my home, with other things on the circuit. It was driving me nuts! Watched this video, fixed in 2 minutes! Thanks a million billion trillion quadrillion!

This is the most informative 1:23 video I've ever watched. I've always wondered how the power is supplied to the other switch when the supply switch is in the down position. It's a constant power. All the switch does is change the power from pole to pole. Now it all makes sense of why I got shocked once dealing with a 3-way switch. Someone installed a 3-way switch in place of a normal 2-pole switch. The ground wire was connected to the left pole. The ground for that circut was electrified.

So why didn't the circuit short to ground when the switch was flipped? Just curious.

@@maedie1 hmmmm, you're right, it should have, but it didn't. I didn't own the place long enough to look more into it. When I changed the switch to a 2-pole, everything was good. Two months after I sold the place, it was destroyed by a hurricane.

Kind of the best video on the subject. Disneyesque simplicity and clarity and visual aid.

The trick is that these aren’t normal “on-off” switches, basically they break one circuit and energize another one (power is always flowing through part of the switch) whenever they are flipped. Rather than a single pole single throw switch that just breaks or energizes a circuit.

It's funny bc to me it's so clear when I watch these videos or get these lessons in class. As soon as I have to run the wires out on a rough it's like my brain shuts off or scrambles or something. The only way I can do this is by drawing a diagram on site.

Now I know what was confusing. So, in this case, when both switches are up or down, the light will be on. However, I know many houses use a different method. In many cases, the light will be on when one switches is down and the other one is in the up position.

There are no defined NO or NC terminals like you would find on a spdt relay, or temperature switch, or pressure switch. The current path depends entirely on the relative positions of the two switches.

Hi. Thanks for the instructional and I thought it was very good. I wonder if you have a video showing the inner mechanisms of 3 way and/or 4 way switches, which shows exactly how flipping the lever can connect and disconnect the juxtaposing travelers and commons. Have not found such a video yet. Thanks again.

The technical name for a 3-way switch is SPDT (single pole double throw). The term 'way' comes from the old english term 'weg', which meant a road to a town. In reference to the switches, way refers to the amount of terminals (not including the ground). So that's the best I have for you. 3-way, 3 terminal, or 3 ways for wires to connect to the switch. Another explanation I have given is that it is a 3-way switch in that 2 switches control a light fixture(s), that totals 3. Rest assured you are not alone with asking this question. Some refer to them as 2-way switches which really makes more sense. It can be in 2 positions.
