    What about chicken manure, besides compost as fertilizer , OR fertilizers like Nutri-Rich, etc. It has been about 4 years out, and most of my fruit trees are not fruiting. I admit it was neglected , and now trying g to “rejuvenate” them. Hope it’s not too late?! All your have been very helpful, thanks❤

    Chicken manure is great. Blood meal, Bone Meal, Biochar, compost, horse manure, duck manure, cow manure, humanure, worm compost, rabbit manure, mulch, anything you could add to your soil will be well appreciated by your soil.

    So true. Thanks Sean. Have you published a how-to video regarding growing bread fruit trees? Mine is a year old and barely hanging on. A friend of a friend said theirs was in pretty bad shape. They neglected it, forgot about it and a year or so later found it thriving and even producing fruit. Is that typical behavior of a bread fruit tree? Slow to establish but once there, explodes in growth and fruit?

  • @HomesteadinHawaii

    @HomesteadinHawaii

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah. They are a little slow at first when you transplant, spending energy establishing roots. Remember to feed it a lot, mulch/manure/fertilizer and it should turn around for you. Its free from weeds yeah? They don't like competing much either.

    @@HomesteadinHawaii Our breadfruit tree was competing with the pineapples so I moved it to a better location I think. Although I do mulch, I don’t think I was feeding enough so I’ll pour it on especially now that I know how to make comfrey tea. Thank you, Sean! We so appreciated your knowledge and the videos you provide.

    Have you had issues with seeds growing from animal manure? I've heard they can be a problem when not aged properly before application.

  • @HomesteadinHawaii

    @HomesteadinHawaii

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would not grow seeds in animal manure. I would start in soil that has been mixed with well aged compost or in flats or pots with soil less based potting mix such as peat or coco coir. I donʻt worry about adding fresh animal manure to my fruit trees, between the chickens and the rain at my place, it gets broken down in a day.

    Congratulations! We had a lot in hpp. Now we are at an undisclosed location more toward you. I would clear only the larger invasive trees IF you are able to do it safely. I.e....don’t clear it until you are on island and building on it or using it. For example, we have a rather thick, weedy, unattractive scrub that covers the back half of our current property. BUT...I leave it in place until I know I will be using the land...because if I chop down the native stuff, I will be sorry because what will grow in its place will be faster growing and probably worse. Also we choose not to use herbicides. I know from experience that when you whack down an albizia, they tend to just Suddenly snap.
