Definitely like this format. I DID find the prior step-by-step for techniques quite useful on ones with which I was unfamiliar. My background is mostly Tae Kwon Do, with no formal training in FMA.

I wish more practitioners would discuss the non deadly self defence applications. Good vid. You should do one on only non deadly defence with a blade.

Karambit flipping is a nice art, and it looks great. In a defensive situation however you won’t be flipping and spinning it like a movie star. You’ll be freaking out and trying to stay alive with its assistance. The Karambit has an excellent geometry and any single solid grip on it will be all you can achieve during split second encounters. I therefore practice single solid arbitrary grips, ending the encounter without changing it.

Kali practitioner here in Manila and in Cebu. I think flipping it is really impractical in a defensive situations. I want to see more of these videos but with an actual adrenaline/street fight scenario, where it is more realistic. Not just when the opponent just stands in one place. Great video though!

You're absolutely right flipping it is pretty useless but if you slice your opponent and they notice and react to the pain then it might give you time but if you can flip the knife to do another devastating attack then why not but really in the heat of the moment it just won't be practical I don't think they flip the Karambit in traditional Silat anyway

@@bluehornet197 They only flip it if they want to extend it out and aim for the neck, which by this case, is more offensive and would not hold well in court. The best 1st line of defense is to run. 2nd defense are keys/pepper spray/fist. 3rd and last resort should be a blade or gun.

None really - it looks really cool and shows you're experienced handling one, but it doesn't have a truly practical application. The karambit is best in the base grip - lacerating, hooking, ripping, gouging. It's a ridiculously brutal weapon that works perfectly well without flipping it. Also you can accidentally slit your wrist on the backswing if you're not careful with a live blade.

You can get even a few extra inches of reach, on a double edged it can inflict damage too, also helps to manipulate the blade to reach around body parts

This is not a Filipino weapon, it is the weapon of our brothers and sisters in the south, from Malaysia and Indonesia. I personally don't know any Filipino Martial Arts teachers that teach the Kerambit and I have never seen a Kerambit back home in the Philippines, definitely not in the Northern region. We can apply the technques easily with Filipino style knife fighting, but please do not associate this weapon with the Filipino Martial Arts. It's not really effective as an equalizer againts a regular knife as well. It's an Assasination weapon used to sneak up on people and brutally destroy a surprised victim. It's against US Constitutional law to ban the weapon, so I urge you to treat the weapon with respect if you choose to own one. God Bless

Kuya the problem with most Karambit videos is why are we showing an armed person vs unarmed person? Isn't that unfair and destroys the human rights or life. In the eyes of the law that is pretty much murder with deadly weapon. What if the person learning this video has criminal intent or grudge on someone? I think its better to show how to equalize a weapon against a weapon or something to defend against it... not offense.

First you have to understand you are demonstrating techniques against an unarmed opponent , which is a a criminal act. You need to respect the blade and understand our techniques are structured to give the opponent a chance to live. We defang the snake and disarm, if the enemy gives up after disarm in a split second we can decide if our life is truly in danger before the kill. Murder and assassination is not Filipino Martial Art. We Filipinos are Judeo-Christians and murder is a sin. This is not Filipino, it is a weapon of Our Indonesian-Malaysian siblings who are not fully of our way.

IlokanoWarrior first off you need to understand that there are potentially hundreds of thousands of people training in a manner that you don’t agree with. You are not the be all and end all of Filipino martial arts. Secondly, 5 minutes can’t even begin to cover ideas and principles of training and teaching fma just because a trainer blade is in my hand for 5 minutes. You have your ideals and people have theirs. And I answer your comment only to defend those of and NOT of Filipino decent and those of different religious values who practice and share the art I love.

Mark Anastacio - Yes there are non- Filipinos practicing the Kerambit and using it with the name of Filipino Kali, Arnis, and Escrima. It’s impossible to discipline everyone , but we can discipline our own. Do not seek fame through teaching the Kerambit, if some one uses a Kerambit in a murderous activity , you better hope to God and Government Law your name is not associated with it. Most of all DO NOT EMBARRASS US AS WE ARE FILIPINO. - GOD BLESS

Grand Tuhon Gaje came out and basically proclaimed all Filipino's who are teaching Kerambit , especially against an unarmed person to STOP! This thing is an assasination weapon, it's not a normal knife, it's actually more deadly than the balisong. It's not a pure Filipino weapon also, it's Indonesian-Malaysain, do we really want to say Filipino Martial Arts teaches a brutal assasination like this???? Stick to the simple stick and knife dude.
