The thing about CGM is that it's become a mean girls club that says if CGM isn't working then you're doing it wrong. Trying to take care of your hair should not get in the way of loving yourself and practicing self care.

I knew these, but I still break them. I was scared of using any heat on my hair after damaging it hugely as a teenager, so didn't own a hairdryer for 10 years. I actually bought one with a cool button and diffuser just recently, and it has made things so much easier. What works for some, may not work for others, I think it's important to remember that.

Ok, I break all these rules 😂. I think they are ridiculous. I am definitely breaking much more hair using my fingers to detangle it. If I air dry it, it literally takes all day. There is no way I am walking around with wet hair all day. And if I don't clarify regularly, I get dandruff. And I mean clarify it with sulphates at least once a weak. So nope, no curly girl method for me. But on the other hand, I only use silicones when I straighten my hair, which is maby 6 times a year. And my hair is really healthy. And it looks like we are curl twins, that is why I just subscribed. It is really dificult to find youtuber with hair, that is not wavy, but not curly at the same time.

I’m interested to see an updated version of this book. I do agree with you that there are lots of sulfate free shampoo. Also the curly hair method doesn’t work for me. Co wash just doesn’t work. My hair gets weighed down easily.

Yes! I think the cowashing is such a silly rule. I feel like it DOESNT work for more people than it does haha!

Co-washing didn’t work for me. I used the Deva Curl co-wash (many years ago before it was sold). Seemed great at first, but as time went on, my hair started looking really stringy and greasy. I’m all for a sulfate-free shampoo with occasional use of a clarifying shampoo.

I do the exact same thing! I use a sulfate free shampoo and clarify 1-2 times a month 😊

The book was written before sulfate free became big. Most brands did not have it.

My scalp is very oily…it smells when it’s dirty and is very itchy… 😳 I have to shampoo it every other day…and then condition the ends but not the scalp. I also use a leave-in conditioner spray that moisturizes the outer part of my hair, but not my scalp. I’ve ALWAYS used a wide tooth comb when my hair is wet, and it’s wonderful…I would hate using my fingers…all I could think about would be the oils from my fingers contaminating my hair… 😳 I have hair very like yours…and this “Curly-Girl” method seems to assume curly hair is “one-size fits all” in some respects…which is ridiculous.

It seems extreme and unreasonable…I feel like this woman has never experienced my type of curly hair… My hair is very healthy, and without breakage….

I agree with you 100%! I think that it isn't practical to flow every single rule of the curly girl method. It's simply too strict.

Some of these I didn't know about. I always thought the co-washing just sounded sort of impractical because I feel like it would weigh my hair down.

Hey Curly Tay 💓 I am sorry for asking you in this video, because it’s a little bit out of topic, but I’ve been trying to fix my problem and nothing worked really well, so I had to ask the queen of the most beautiful curls 🤤 I recently find out that I have like 2a-2b curls and I’ve been following your (and other) routines and the problem is that I have curls only for like 2-3 hours and then my hair straightens, I always end up with straight hair after a couple of hours after my hair fully dries and I just don’t know what else to do, like I tried to put more products (disgusting hair in the end), tried styling on the hair that just a little bit wet (curls just doesn’t form) and etc, so I hope you could’ve gave me an advice, please 💓 And sorry for any english mistakes! Thank you

Hi Maya!! Do you diffuse your hair? Diffusing can help your curls hold for longer. Also, I have recently been experimenting with adding some hairspray when my hair is almost all the way dry. This has been helping a lot with adding hold and volume!! I hope this helps 😊💗

Right after finishing the book, I went and co-washed, following up with Kenra Daily Provisions leave-in conditioner, and the only styling product I had in the house, Frizz-Ease Mousse. Now, prior to this, I always considered my hair to be frizzy-straight. I would wash and condition, allow to air dry, and that's what I got. I did this first attempt at CG with what I had in hand (figuring if I hated it I could just jump in the shower again and wash it all out, right?), and got the biggest, bounciest, beautiful curls you could imagine! Musta been like heroine... Never got results that good again. In fact, those curls, after a couple of years of using only DC, diminished to waves. Still journey-ing, but I'm not slaving to the expensive anymore. I finally admitted that DC products WERE making my hair fall out, and am looking for replacements, one product at a time. First up was gel. TresEmme has one that is CG-friendly, and I do like the results. After hair dried and I broke the cast, the curls lasted all day, and looked even better 2nd day after pineapple-ing and stuffing it into a silky-lined slouch cap for sleeping (it's blue. I look like Marge Simpson!). Hair is shiny as anything, and SOFT. I know we're not supposed to touch our hair unless necessary, but that gets really difficult when finally at peak health. We all have different hair, even if we type it similarly. We all have different skin and issues. We all have different hormonal levels. We live in different areas, dealing with different weather. Finding what hair "cocktail" works best is going to take TIME. Journey on!
