3 Things to Know about the Onkalo Repository for Spent Nuclear Fuel

Ғылым және технология

Olkiluoto Island is home to three of Finland’s 5 reactors and will soon be the final destination for the all of the country’s spent nuclear fuel.
ONKALO is the first licensed deep disposal site for high level nuclear waste in world and is expected to start operations in 2025.
Once up and running, it will house all of the country’s nuclear fuel that’s used to cleanly generate a majority of Finland’s electricity.
The fuel will be safely stored more than 1,300 feet below the Earth’s surface in corrosion-resistant canisters.
The canisters will be embedded into crystalline bedrock, which is among the oldest in the world and was extensively studied to ensure favorable long-term storage conditions.
The fuel will be stored here for hundreds to thousands of years, but could be retrieved from the repository within the first 100 years of operations if new innovations are invented to treat the fuel for future use.
The United States is currently pursuing a consent-based process to site one or more federal consolidated interim storage facilities to reduce the number of locations where our spent fuel is stored until a long-term disposal pathway is determined.
