    I really love that you guys take your safety so seriously. You guys are really a good influence. As someone who watched their Mom deteriorate from lung disease, because of the chemicals she used her whole life at her work, Im always advocating for people to be safer. You only have the two lungs you have and losing the ability to breathe properly or watching someone die that way is something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy. My Mom had no idea, at the time, that she was damaging her lungs. I’m glad research and education has come a long way regarding the things we inhale and how it effects us but we still have a long way to go. I just wanted to give you a pat on the back for showcasing that safety is something you take seriously. I appreciate you guys and your content. Thank you for taking the time to entertain us. • @swankeepers
    @swankeepers Жыл бұрын

    One of my dad's many fleeting hobbies during my youth was candle-making. You can, in fact, whip wax. Every Christmas, he would make a batch of cranberry-scented red candles (in pint milk cartons) and we would top them with the whipped wax, which very cleverly looks like snow. But it is 'chunky', never smooth. And you have to whip and then apply to the candle swiftly, as it sets pretty quick (it is already partially set when you start the whipping). His finishing touch was to score a brick pattern around the block, and use candle-friendly white paint to highlight. The rough application of paint simulated mortar pretty well. Ah, the memories - pretty sure I still have one of those candles in our gazillion boxes of Christmas stuff.

    Soaking various flammable materials in wax is extremely common for making firestarters. A lot of people will fill muffin tins with sawdust, shredded paper, dryer lint, etc. and soak them with melted wax. I've also done cotton balls and vaseline.

    The first is actually something I learned to do as a fire starter for hiking. Although that used newspaper or other clean trash paper or cardboard but the idea was the same. Crusr or oll paper looselyWax coverd paper is waterproof, easy to light and burns pretty hard

    When it comes to how dangerous the rose candle fire was, I've had something very similar happen to me indoors in an apartment complex. I stupidly used scented candles (ALWAYS USE UNSCENTED) with my ceramic fondu pot, the wax overflowed over the votive candle container and created at HUGE fire with just 3 little candles. I'm talking flames shooting out sideways out of the little heart shaped windows, up and over the fondu bowl on top. The oil from the scent/wax dye caught fire and had a HUGE foot high flame. Luckily I watch a lot of kitchen nightmares and knew to douse it with a soaked wet cloth so I could safely transport it to the kitchen sink to put the fire out. Ironically it was for an anniversary date, and he didn't leave me after that huge fail so despite my cracked, heart shape fondu maker the relationship is pretty strong!

    I have a theory about the nail polish candle flame situation .....the nail polish getting sucked into the wick acts as extra fuel, causing a bigger flame. When it's all burned off the flame drops down until it gets hot enough to pull more nail polish in and repeat the process

  • @wanderingent

    I actually used to make things similar to the cupcakes and sell them at craft shows. Usually I did milkshakes but I also did a few sundaes. The ice cream is a similar process but you wait a little longer for the wax to set and just spoon it out with a regular ice cream scoop. Usually they're just decorative and not meant to be burned though or you'll end up with them spilling out the sides (though mine were still in a vessel to help prevent that but you get the point). People have been making dessert candles for decades, so the one craft that ended up working by 5-minute crafts was something they ripped off from a tried and true method. The real fun candles are the pie looking ones though they tend to be more involved and use gel wax for a nice glaze/syrup along with molds for fruit and crusts. Fun to play with not to eat.

    The cupcake candle is actually pretty darn cute. And I get the feeling it'd be really good to use for someone who can't have regular cake for whatever reason (like a food allergy) so they can still have their birthday wish. Or even as decoration you just keep it on a plate, so it looks like a cupcake just sitting out on a plate on your coffee table for some reason???? IDK, I don't get candle culture.

  • @rybec

    Loved that first one! When I was much younger, I spent a lot of time playing with tealite candles. I always did this outside (and it's not safe to do inside), but I enjoyed adding a few extra wicks, usually made out of paper. The heat would melt all of the wax, and if it got hot enough (two paper wicks on top of the one it came with was typically enough), _the wax would start evaporating and burning independently of the wicks._ Did I mention that you should _never_ try this inside? Yeah, it's dangerous. It can be done safely, but it takes a lot of care. So yeah, anyhow, I knew _exactly_ where that was going. One giant wick covered in wax? Definitely a fireball! So fun to watch too! And yeah, the blood red color of the wax made it very metal. I'm going to have to start playing with fire again. (Carefully, obviously.) (Ok, so actually, I'm currently working on making an ultra hot torch that burns hydrogen and oxygen made using electrolysis, so I'm already on the verge of playing with fire again and much more dangerous fire too...)

    @rybec, please be careful. Certain ratios of oxygen and hydrogen are quite explosive. LOL. During a school open house decades ago, I had the hydrogen-generating station (zinc nodules in hydrochloride acid) for the burning of hydrogen in air to generate water as confirmed by the condensation of water on a cold watch glass. Now, an important safety point was that one had to wait a while for any air in the Erlenmayer flask to be completely replaced by just hydrogen before lighting the gas exit tube. At the end of the Open House, two guys in my class decided they wanted to really make a big flame. So they removed the closing thistle tube, dumped a bunch of zinc nodules into the flask, replaced the tube and light the exit /immediately/. Said thistle tube became a vertical ballistic missile as the air-hydrogen mix in the flask went KAPOOF! Fortunately only glassware got broken, but I was SO MAD at them. I did see my chemistry teacher smirk at the incident.
