I have been looking into nonprofits on and off for a while and I think it is an appropriate way to structure the type of work I am interested in doing, but the hardest part seems to me to be... finding the right people to work with from the beginning. I know the work itself is very important and needed (converting vacant and degraded spaces to publicly exemplify human design that is beneficial to the water cycle and ecosystems, produce diverse high quality food locally for communities, and create free learning opportunities related to this) but it is surprisingly difficult to find people who are passionate about this who would be appropriate to create a nonprofit with, and a lot of the work to restore and improve lands without trying to become owner of them seems like it requires having that legal recognition as a charitable organization to even be taken seriously in the first place..

When I did our 501c3 in Indiana, we needed Bylaws and Articles Incorporation in order to file for the 501c3.

Wonderful, you simplified the explanation of the processes. What is the estimated cost of forming a not for profit corporation till the opening of a bank account. And what is the estimated annual cost including renewals and filing of income tax return?

I need help setting up mine!

Is there a way to do it by starting with one person or do need a team of people?

Aloha, im currently going through the process in setting up my non profit. you have been inspirational have zero dollars need to fundraise or something to support my non profit. We are a feeding ministry and want to provide temporary housing in our area. Also took guardianship over children we use to foster and trying to find a way to create a non profit for a boarding home for foster children being that their is a big need for children without parents

I'm trying to get a non profit photography business . In which kids who where abused get to direct their own photo shoot to help them feel empowered and in control on the road to recovery.the goal is to make it so they do not have to pay a dime

1023 is the application to get NON-profit staus at the federal level. The 990 is a tax form that you report your earnings on to the IRS. And yes you must also do a state tax form and most likely an Annual report as well.

What if I want to feed people does that fall under the 501c3? Also, thank you. You popped up on my feed never even heard of anything like this but you have me very intrigued now. I have something I want to do and I never thought about it from this side of it, thank you for opening my eyes.

Thank you for your interest. In order to qualify as a tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, you must define a specific charitable purposes. The Internal Revenue Service Publication 557 (IRS Pub 557) gives us few examples of activities that can be deemed charitable. However, important to note that this list is non exclusive and some other activities not specifically listed on the Publication may still allow to be declared as charitable. Some of the most common categories include: religious, charitable, scientific, public safety, educational, sports, and preventive purposes. So long as you can fit your activity in one of these categories, then you should be able to qualify.

Hi Mary, It is actually a non profit - not and S or C. You apply for the EIN and apply for exempt status (form 1023) and it relates back to the date of filing when approved.

Yes you can take a salary from a non-profit. The salary must be "reasonable," meaning what a person doing that type of work would normally earn. The salary will be taxed to you as income, unless you choose to contribute to a tax-deferred account.

I'm in California. To set up a Corporation I will have to pay $800 yearly. Is that the same fee for a non-profit?

We are starting a photography club.We need to be non profit. Dues will be paid annually, that money will be used for educational purposes. 5O1C3 ? Or 5O1C7? Does 1 person have to use their personal SS# when it is a group club/effort?

How can I get this process started?

Once you put the original funds in to this can you invest some of those funds to grow the charity or is it strictly by donations after that and if so does that mean you have to do some type of fund raising?

This can be a complicated issue but generally, at least 1/3 of the non-profit's funding must come from outside sources by year five. If you set up a private foundation, all funds come from you personally.

What about produce? Is there a non-profit that can be setup for companies that grow produce?
