whats up bro! I like electrics too, I like all RC for what they are. But the Nitro is really the Epitome of RC for car guys and people who like auto sports in general. To the Nitrogang we appreciate an engine break-in as much as hitting those 3-speed passes. It's all good!

I sure did alot of yelling in this video, this savage is the loudest Nitro I own. The only louder nitro RC I've ever heard was the Thunder Tiger EK4, the same one as yours. Have you tried to start it yet?

hey bro! Let me welcome you to the 3-Speed Nitrogang baby!! LOL. Make sure to check the RX battery, my original one would not hold a charge well, needed to be replaced. Hit me up with any question ok. I did a couple other vids on this, mostly on adjusting the 3-speed trans, a whole job to do on these things, but highly important for it to shift correctly.

haha, yes!! that's because for that lap I was running around the track to get better shots. Plus driving a 3-speed savage in that race environment is very nerve-wrecking. Since I have to be hitting high RPM at all times and top speeds to shift into 3rd. BTW there will be more on that 1/5 scale electric rampage in a future video. It needs to repect it's grandparents, cause the savage is for sure qualified to be the granddaddy RC of them all, lol..

Nice!! You really got your Savage xl running and shifting perfect. I got to do some tuning on mine to get it running that good again. Great video. Savage xl 5.9 is my favorite rc.

hey my dude!! Oh ye, the shifting part was not easy, I had to do trial and error adjustments of all the gears. I was writing down how many turns more on pieces of paper and reconciling my results, ahaha. Only problem with the 5.9 motor is it tends to self lean out when it's running good, you noticed those high speed passes it sounded lean, but I know for a fact, it's not lean. That's why I have to keep the idle a little high to warm it up at first cause it runs to rich in low RPM, and Lean in high RPM. Still adequate to destroy some electrics tho.

whats ups bro! YUP! the savage is back. I must say it feels quite good racing modern electrics with a 10+ year old fully stock nitro Truck and doing pretty good. Plus I was easy on them if you noticed, didn't want to crush anybody in the turns.

Dunnow if this is read by you. But first of all great channel to keep nitro rc alive. To adjust the annoying 3 speed of savage, just turn in the 3. speed at maximum and change the 1-2 and 2-3 claw. That way u will be able to adjust 1-2 gear by slipping to 1-3 gear. Get that well adjustet and change back and adjust 3. speed. In fact that way you only need to remove transmission only 2 times for whole process ;)

hey my dude!! You know the Savage XL is King of the Savage lineup! You right about that. After the XL it was all down hill for HPI. Gang 4 Life yo!!! BTW, I'm attempting to break the 50 MPH speed barrier with this soon, so far I got a top speed of 46 MPH.

hey my dude! Yes, I love this thing, and it's 100% stock, and yet it's still amazing. Only this and the Kyosho Mad Force/Mad crusher have factory 3-speed setups. Some others models of the savage had it available, but not in an RTR model like this XL did.

I just got one a few weeks ago but the button/underhead glowplug got stripped. I had to helicoil it due to unavailable parts. Eventually got some used ones a few days ago but shipping is killing me (US to the Philippines). Hope not to ruin anything in the future as parts for it are hard to come by. Btw, this thing drinks a LOT of nitro! Really load too. Need to test my 3 speed baby!!!

hey my dude! THat's amazing that you have this truck all the way in the Philippines, I can imagine it's extremely rare in your country. Anyway, make sure not to over tighten the glow plug, once it's tight you only need at most 1/4 of a turn with the plug wrench. Plus did you use the brass gasket the plug comes with? that gasket does most of the sealing for you. Soon you need to be yelling 3-speed baby!! IF you record a short clip of that, I'll use it in a future video. Nitrogang is with you!.

5:04 "You can't disrespect your Grandparents" LMAO. I have electrics and Nitro. The electrics are more powerful and they have their moments of fun. All that instant torque does have a draw back/ They break themselves more often. When they aren't stripping gears out, they're dead after 25 minutes. You also have to ensure the Lipos don't burn your house down. The plus side to electric is you don't have to drive to your hobby store to get more juice. The nitro goes all day long and because it's not so powerful, doesn't break as often. It's exciting because you have a real breathing engine. Not a boring whisper sound. Nitro proves that you don't always have to be the fastest to have fun. It's not surprising these days that electric is taking over. They're more powerful with instant gratification. These days there's no more motivation to develop a skill and get satisfaction over knowing YOU and your talent (outside of driving skills) are responsible for the performance of your car versus an engineer.

hey my fellow NitroGang brother! I also own a number of electrics, including vintage ones. As you say, it's a completely different thing, running any nitro/gas engine compared to electric is totally different. I must say I agree, the electrics tend to all blow diffs and almost always have driveline issues, actually about 75% of my electrics all have diff problems. Reality is, once you have diff problems they will never go away.

BRO, there were alot of Speeds in this video, ahaha. The only thing missing was the CVT trans in my Prius, ahaha. Gotta tell you tho, it's not easy to get this savage to shift to third gear on such a short track, I had to tune the shift points religiously to get it to work well.

Love that hpi xl, I have one too! Beast Mode baby. Nice video,love it! Off road a XL is a wheelie Monster on grass.

You gotta admit the handling around an oval track on pavement was not terrible, considering this is a giant monster truck with zero mods or any kind. hey my dude! Yup, the Arrma Gap Hoodie guy is a real Nitro Sure himself, I told him to break out his associated MGT next time. TO be honest with you, I'm not sure if I'm allowed to run RCs on that beach, I do it once in a while, but the parks cops are never far away. The Regulation in NYC is insane. God Forbid I fly a drone, I would probably get a fine.

hey my dude! Oh yes!! This was the only RTR model to ever come with a factory 3-speed. This engine is rated at 3.75 HP, so it pulls all day long! There was an optional 3-speed kit sold by HPI for the savage X 4.6 also btw. And I think somberly version of the Savage SS kit had 3-speeds.

hey brother! Yup, those electrics were Lucky I was alone. Because I brought the T-maxx 3.3 as backup, just in case. But I didn't even need it this time. Soon the T-maxx Gang will be back, and taking these suckers on.

hey my dude! That's awesome! I was lucky to find this one used a couple years ago, the only issues I've had are bad rear turnbuckle links. I currently have zip ties around them so they don't pop off the ball cup, and yet I still destroyed the electrics and jumped on the sand with it, without problems. Nitrogang!>

hey my dude! The XL K5.9 as seen in this video came with the 3-speed from the factory. HPI also made an optional 3-speed trans that would drop right into a Savage X, check this link, this is the original upgrade part. pretty interesting. www.hpiracing.com/en/part/87218. I think years ago there was a Savage SS offered as a kit which came with a 3-speed. I've never seen one of those in real life though.

haha, yes! The savage Requites a damn Pit crew, it's so damn thirsty, lol. But once you warm it up that engine is great, and fully stock. I get the most joy out of destroying electrics with a Vintage Stock Nitro, to show them the reality of the Nitrogang! Next time I will do more sand jumping, BTW, half the electrics had destroyed diffs in this video, they cannot hang with this Savage. I didn't even have to break out the T-maxx for this run.

hey brother!! Yes, I need to adjust the brakes some, I just put this radio in for this video, my original HPI TF-20U radio broke. But yes, you're 100% right. I can also adjust the brake cam itself, no big deal. Part of me likes the fierce brakes tho, not going to lie! ahaha.

hey bro! Thanks! Yes, all the XL K5.9 Models have 3-speeds. Chances are your buddy's one is stuck in only two gears and not shifting into one of the the 3 gears at all. I had to do alot of testing and tuning the trans to get mine to shift like that, tell him to watch the playlist on this truck here, you will see how I removed each clutch and reset them to factory specs.

What you really would like to have is g the bullet 3 speed. I had mine done years ago when savage central was up I’m running. They posted how to do it by steps along with what other parts you needed to modify the stock 3 speed.

@@hybrid32494 man sorry I just saw this. I’m going to have to look it up and see if I can find all the steps to the process. Savage central closed down some years ago and closed out our accounts. So it was full of all kinds of info mods just a perfect place for hpi people. Basically it is your stock trans but you had to purchase 2 gears then shave off one end of the gear the place another gear and it takes away your reverse but it was called bullet proof 3spd. But again. Let me find it if it still out there somewhere on the net...

Oh ya 3spd nitro 2spd nitro just nitro it speed! Question losi lst2 nitro or savage 4.6 nitro? Couple deals same price which one for now?

HMM< good question! I would close the savage 4.6 because it's nearly bulletproof and easy to work on. The LST2 is a collectible also, but I rarely see any parts for them and LOSI in general is much rarer than the Savage Line of trucks, you know.

hey bro! I have had this exact Savage speed tested to 46 MPH. I think I can break the 50 MPH barrier soon, that's my goal. I was running the idle a little higher than normal to make sure the motor does not bog down and shut off while I was around the electrics, lol. That would have been embarrassing.

i got rid of a savage MINT with the 3 speed tranny because the one way would slip i changed it over and over but this when they first came out so people were haters.

How you liking that bones brew fuel?cant wait to try some

hey my dude! The fuel is pretty good for the money. I honestly cannot tell you it's significantly better or worse, but I've run it in many of my nitros and it performs adequate. Personally I like to run 20% nitro, but there is no cost advantage with lower nitro % when buying bones brew, you know. All the raw components are identical anyway in all nitro fuel, only variables are the oil and nitro content %.

hey bro! You got a good idea there, I do run my stuff relatively rich on both the HSN and LSN, you're right. To be honest with you, I do that to avoid too many wheelies, I want a nice clean launch with good hook up, you know. Plus even in this video when it seemed like I was full throttling it form the launch, I was not, I only gradually accelerate to avoid lifting the front up in the process. This is a monster truck after all, you know . Nitrogang!!

hey buddy! I'm hoping it's true, but honestly we can only judge based on RC brands selling nitros and their overall variety. It looks like more and more are dropping nitros and Gas from their lineups. It seems only Buggies which have been around for 10+ years are being made new. But that does not matter, Nitro will never die on this channel bro. I will keep racing electrics till I die.

I doubt Novarossi has anything to do with it, most of the market is mainstream brands like Traxxas and competitors with RTRs anyway. The basic bashers like me would not run expensive Novarossi engines anyway, SO I don't feel upset over that. BTW, the R40 is dope!!! amazing 1/10 on-road RC, Nitrogang supports u bro!.

That's how much power and suspension travel this thing has. Plus it's 100% stock. We don't need mods to beat electrics on nitro RCs, the 2-stoke takes care of it anyway.

hey buddy! There were models of the Savage SS which came in a kit that had a 3-speed trans. I would say yes. IT should fit in the standard area just like the regular savage X. The question is, will you be able to find a 3-speed unit at this point. In terms of gear ratios for speed, just install a taller pinion, you will be fine. Nitrogang!>

I rarely sell any of my nitros, because as you could see I love this stuff. BTW the XL will most likely never be made again, but you could get the Savage X 4.6. They are still sold brand new.

I think for a couple tanks of fuel they all went through about 3-4 sets of lipos. Plus I'm not counting all the damaged lipos I've seen go on fire on this track either.

I cant wait to see what happened with your revo os 18tz.

hey bro!! thanks man! Glad you can appreciate the Classic Savage XL K5.9. So many people tell me to put another motor in it, I just don't get it. This motor is a beast, why change it. IT's 3.75 HP as rated, really no other nitro motor out there that can match this which isn't a crazy price. Nitrgang!

hey bro!, the LRP 32 is more powerful, that is true. If for whatever reason this k5.9 motor needs to be replaced that is what I will get. My main goal is to keep my RCs as close to STOCK as possible, otherwise I'd never be able to convey how great they truly were, in stock factory form, you know. This motor is rated at 3.75 HP btw.

One more season for the nitro gang here in the EU, after that it'll be dead thanks to some new regulations. Nice knowing y'all and don't forget to stock up on fuel before February!

I didn't know anything about that thanks for highlighting it.I don't know if it's gonna affect the uk but from what I can gather you will need a licence to buy anything above 16% nitro after 02/02/21. If it gets too expensive theres always 1/5 scale 😀

​@@danielwood4590 The two biggest problems are the following: 1. There's no system to get a license for hobby use yet, not even a single suggestion of how to handle it from the politicians' side. You can get one for your business but that doesn't allow you to use it for your private hobby. 2. They used a wrong volume/weight ratio in their calculations making their suggested 16% more of a 13%. This is really bad for race engines who can already struggle with heat on hot days running 25%, 13% will run way hotter. You UK guys really dodged a bullet in that department thanks to brexit.

Your idle is too high and your rear wheels need to be flipped around so the arrow direction are faced forward for better traction like the ones in the front. Good video of the savage dominating the e words.

BTW I know my idle is high, I tend to run this truck a little high because it takes forever to warm up, and it will bog down and shut off until the engine is hot enough. I kept it higher than normal here because I could not embarrass myself in front of the E_Word Gang, you know. LOL.

@@hybrid32494 Yes the K5.9 suffers from running rich at idle and low speed then leans out at higher RPMS. The fuel passages in the K5.9 are too small to adequately feed the combustion chamber the right way. You will notice it even more after the tank passes mid tank when the fuel head is reduced and the engine has a hard time sucking in the fuel. This is the reason some do "mid tank mod" on the XLs. Safe bashing.

hey bro!! that's right, good old Tim Horton's coffee and doughnuts. The franchise just came to my area, so it's pretty cool in my opinion. I use the mobile order app, and so far not one mistake. Plus that doughnut at the end is significantly better than any Dunkin Doughnuts.

hey my dude!! I sure do! The nitrogang knows it's awesome vintage collectible RCs. In fact let me tell you the different types of RS4s I have. A modded OS 12 VC RS4-2. A Super Nitro RS4, fully stock. Also an original stock HPI RS4-3, aka RTR 3. I also have a couple HPI Nitro MTs, not an RS4, but they share alot of the same parts.

@@michaelvesely Good question! Problem is the 1/10 scales are too low to the ground to run at that RC track, But I will attempt to bring the super nitro RS4. Its much taller and almost a 1/7 scale RC. But first I have to get it running. That one was donated to my channel, so it needs tons of work, clearly. lol.

hey my dude! What's up! IDK if you knew this about the XL K5.9 models but they have an issue where they start out running VERY RICH and then tend to LEAN OUT towards the middle of the tank, and then run much leaner on their own as you keep running. This is the most AVERAGE tune in order to not over heat towards the end of the tank. There are mods called the (Savage Half Tank Lean Mod) you could do. But for my purposes this is the most average tune for the situation, you know.

@@hybrid32494 I have been running nitro since 2003, I've got engines in flying model aircraft that are 50, 60 years old that run fine, hell I'm still using the second engine I ever bought well over a decade later! The TRX3.3 in my Slayer lasted **one** gallon. That engine is an unmitigated pile of shit. I got my Slayer for ~250 because the engine was blown. Replaced the shitty stock rod that was half a tank from snapping like a twig with Davis Diesel's upgraded rod, replaced the toasted top end with OEM, engine lasted a gallon before it blew up again. In that time it blew the clutch *twice in two tanks*, it never once held a tune for more than 10 minutes at a time, it was often fussy to start, it ate glow plugs like candy and fuel economy was trash. Replaced the engine with the Dynamite 19T 5-port and my engine problems disappeared overnight, but then I had a brake pad shart out its friction lining, had a transmission randomly turn into a maraca for no good reason, I had a shock cap somehow pop off without stripping any threads, steering issues started cropping up. The stock tires on the truck were so awful they nearly broke my better half's shin and anything else I put on the truck got shredded. And atop all of that, when it was working, It handled like a 1972 Cadillac Eldorado driven by a drunken hillbilly. The truck is now in my RC boneyard getting parts ripped off of it for other uses because I'm sick and tired of having to replace something on it every single time I drive it. Might put the transmission in a Toyan powered Globe Liner project, the engine/nice M2C clutch are in my parts bin, the exhaust...I had been running the stock pipe from my first NTC3...has found itself back onto another NTC3 I'm building for my local oval track, the receiver, on-board glow driver have found new homes in some of my airplanes as well as the servos, the tires are now an alternate option for my SC10GT. I like being able to take a 500cc pit bottle out there, run the whole thing through the car in one continuous shot, and not have to worry about breaking down or flaming out or having to touch the carb. All of my other nitros can do that, but the Slayer couldn't. You should look into getting a Kyosho Mad Crusher GP and a Kyosho Scorpion XXL. The KE-25 engine is an absolute dreamboat(I built my Scorp as a kit using a second KE-25 pulled from a buddy's FO-XX). Super reliable, good power, starts right up, takes a beating and just doesn't give a shit. And both vehicles are super fun to drive; the Mad Crusher is a 1/8 live axle monster truck with a 3-speed transmission that weighs about the same as a T-Maxx and the Scorpion XXL is a super scale 1/7 dune buggy that handles like a dream. My Scorp's also FPV'd; got footage of...well actually I have footage of all of my nitros on my channel if you wanna have a look.

Mostly scared of flipping and/or hitting somebody. But it was fine. anyway, IDK about these sites that say they have those old RCs, it's almost always a scam. I just ordered some diff gears for my HPI Trophy Truly Flux, website said in-stock, next day they e-mail me and say will be in December maybe.
