Shawn Lane so that’s what happened! I’ve been following that channel since the start, trying to learn as much as I could from the legend. At least now I know why it got removed.

What’s odd is lanes. Vids are from 90d but they all seem like they are from 1930. All of them. U think one would be clear Maybe Simone can clean them up. Not sure

Hellborg, Lane, and Sipe was such an incredible power trio. Jeff Sipe is a ridiculously underrated drummer!

Everything you said about Shawn in the intro is 100% right. We throw the word 'genious' around too much, but he truly was one.

Nothing I can say about Shawn that hasn't already been said, but anytime I can steal some of his licks I'm eternally grateful. Thanks Dave!

Shawn was such a humble,yet open minded guy,his video,at the end ,he talks about loving all arts ,film,art,music ,he lived such a full life ,a great keyboard player,too,what an inspiration,all this ,while dealing with illness,such a loss.

Shawn Lane was beyond genius. He had great melodies, great rhythm, and terrifying speed with riffs that were extremely difficult at half the tempo. We may never see anyone with Shawn's ability ever again.

What a great lesson and great tribute to the late great Shawn Lane!

Thanks Joe! As soon as I heard about him he was in the magazines and they just RANTED, so I knew he had to be amazing. They just ranted a raved about how fast he was and how Billy Gibbons fell off a bar stool when he heard him, so I was beyond interested in hearing him play, but...at that time, you couldn't find anything with him playing on it, other than one or two of those GFTPM magazine compilation albums. And when I was a kid, I didn't have much money, so I was afraid of compilations and stuck with artists/albums I knew were good - mostly Van Halen (hahaha). When I finally heard him and then met him not long after that - I was stoked and continued to follow his career until he passed. I was bummed and still listen and think about him from time-to-time. In all honesty, this video was the least I could do to pay some respect and tribute to this master of music. Thanks again Joe and take care!

Shawn Lane was an anomaly man the guys shredding was terrifying as PG states, but he had such an incredibly melodic ear and his tone was also insanely killer. Just very sad what that poor guy had to go through in his life, but man what a legacy he left for all of us guitar nerds !!

Shawn Lane did not seem human when he played! His technical skills were so far above the rest! Love Andy Timmons playing as well.

I've been dying for some technique from his Hellborg/Lane/Sipe days! This is my favorite work of his. The Atlanta Drums and Percussion shows are absolutely legendary! Just a few short weeks after they did those 2 shows they toured in Germany and recorded Personae and Time is the Enemy! It's a miracle that somebody actually recorded these shows on VHS, because that's the only footage of his style that I know of in that short time that I'm so interested in, and over three hours of footage at that! Finally somebody is breaking down some of these awesome licks that I love from my favorite albums. Thank you!

he's changed my idea of technical mastery, and limits. I find that non-musicians (and even schooled guitarists sometimes) seem lost in what they used to call "Sheets of Melody". I can hear what he's doing but when you try to get near his speed, or play even his "easier" licks it's just unattainable. Interestignly most of his friends say he was a genius in life, that music was just how he got around almost.....what a tragic loss. Wonderful work, I love your content. Cheers.

I totally agree and he was such an amazing musician and human being. Everyone talks about his guitar playing (which was exceptional) but his piano/keyboard chops were unreal too. He was like another Chopin on the keys and blazed past everyone on the fretboard. A true MONSTER. : )

Absolutely and that's what this is ALL about! : ) I feel there are countless musicians and players out there that deserve more recognition and respect than they commonly receive. Shawn is a big name on that list, but it's surprising to notice how long the list actually is. There are hundreds of players that never really saw much of the spotlight in their career but they totally deserve it!

This made me subscribe to you. You are not only an excellent teacher but an amazing guitar teacher, wish you lived near me. You should do more Shawn licks, he truly was the greatest. And, that 2nd lick has always been a favorite of mine, super amazing man.

You're amazing. Hats off to you.

Excellent , excellent video!!! More on Shawn Lane, my favorite guitarist of all time. And I don't have a favorite of anything in the world. That says alot.

Honestly I never heard the name before, but very exciting presentation explaning the theory behind the licks.

Really nice guitar licks. I love the lydian mode. It's a mode where you can play freely and at the pace that you want. Joe Satriani plays some lovely melodic stuff using the lydian.

Love your playing and your teaching skills. Shawn is rightly revered by many of the greats e.g Paul Gilbert,but even Shawn would admit that his greatest influence and inspiration was the peerless Allan Holdsworth, who really was in a league of his own,and whose playing,even back in the 70's,had today's virtuosos scratching their heads.

I wish Shawn’s mom would get her website running, so we could GLADLY pay to purchase the vault full of his videos. PLEASE MRS. LANE, PLEASE!

That is so cool... I knew Shane Lane also in Memphis... He would come into the music store I worked at. (Amro) You are right, he was a great guy... I got to know him right before and after his Solo record deal. It's funny because he always wore like un-matching corduroy pants and flannel shirts and they dressed him up so... lol Made him look like Steven Segal. LOL But he bought a red Maserati and had $$$$$$ worth of power amps in the back just for the car stereo. He like to come in a talk about Baseball!

Dave, heres a cool thing to do with that last diminished lick. Tap/add your right-hand finger a minor third up (on each string) and it becomes even more insane sounding.

😂 In your videos, you always seem to mention something that I relate to. I was born in Evansville. 😂 Also, you can always spot the true guitarists/bass players in an audience. They are the one’s whose eyes are glued to the musician’s fretting & picking hands. 😂 I’m one if those guys who, at every gig/concert is staring at the hands of the musicians, watching their techniques.

Comes in right between the tones of Holdsworth and Gambale. In other words, KILLER lead tone!
