When I was in my third trimester, driving alone between states overnight, I got stuck in a bad traffic jam and realized I was almost out of gas after a while. Next gas station was going to have to do. Damn, it's a truck stop. Hopefully they at least have regular not just diesel. I stood there in my pajamas, exhausted, pumping gas when an older trucker kept coming closer from his truck just talking more and more about "What's a pretty lady doing here in the cold?" stuff. I frowned and gave vague, one word answers and kept pumping gas. He didn't see my dog until she clawed her way out to follow me (smart and shoves open doors and can roll down windows), and he immediately backpedaled and said see ya and got in his truck. This is why I don't go anywhere out of town without at least one of my dogs, they discourage most people from coming too close to me like that.

I mean why not give them a ride though? I wouldn’t tell them no, any morally decent person would have let them in, but after they don’t explain where they are going, that’s when you could tell them to either give you a location or to get out. Usually there’s some sort of reason to why they would need a ride, and since it’s literately pouring, I would let them in the car and have them explain especially if it’s an older women. But of course the people here since they know it’s a horror story would have claimed to say no, but without that knowledge I almost guarantee people would think otherwise.

Sometimes people don’t bother to do something so simple. Because like come on who’s going to expect someone that’s not their kid to just hop in the car in that situation. We tend to believe something isn’t true, because we don’t think someone could miss something so simple, but when we know what already happened, or know what to look for, then of course we will pick up on it, unlike someone who’s actually experiencing it unknowingly.

numbdeath he probably didn't want to scare Tom or knew he would be safe at the gas station if he stayed inside, if Tom's parent thought it was Tom in the backseat he may have been too young to sit in the front and wouldn't know the difference between someone trying to help him and someone trying to hurt him, parents usually teach younger kids "stranger danger" so they don't get hurt.
