3 Rounds of No Gi Rolling with 2X ADCC Champ Jt Torres

Спорт

Ever heard the saying "sometimes you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail"? Well in this BJJ rolling video you'll see me be 100% nail. Granted it was to be expected since I was rolling with 2X ADCC champion Jt Torres. It's still another thing entirely to "feel" it.
During the no gi BJJ training we got started relatively slow with the rolling and then began to speed it up a bit. By the end of the rolling (which lasted about 30 minutes) we had a pretty good sweat going.
During the video you'll see Jt Torres outwork me with his position and technique. I mean he's in great shape for sure. But his positioning and technique were truly incredible. I was never able to put myself into a strong attacking position which put me on the defensive constantly.
I could have not posted this video but I think it's important for transparency. Many of you follow me and look to me for answers to your Brazilian Jiujitsu questions. And I'm happy to share my ideas with you. But always remember that I'm on the same path you are. I'm trying to improve and be the best I can be. And sometimes I do great and other times I get mauled, like in this video. But I'll keep going and doing my best to improve. And so should you!
Hope you enjoyed the video!

.....all while maintaining an amused smirk?.. ahh, yes... i, too, have had the honor, of being humbled enough by JT, to carry that healthy humility into my next several reincarnations. (loll) OSS my brother! i'm rejoining Essential in 7 months as a Brown.. this time around, vowing to train smart, adapt around injuries.. & put in the Elite level of work required to be considered worthy for the privilege.. & Honor of being promoted to Black Belt under Professor JT Torres .::. { just as i had promised JT, 15 years ago... ..after our first private in 2008/2009.. he said, "nice technique, man.. keep doin what you're doin, work hard, you'll get that black." i responded with, "'oh for sure bro! no rush on my end, ill get that Black Belt one day, i promise... ..but Only when it comes directly from you.." it was a super casual & very common post training exchange of kind words.. i just happened to have meant it with all my heart... ...Now is my time to return in early 2024 & keep my Promises... OSSSS!

Been wrestling since 2003. Doing Jiu jitsu since 2007. I remember when JT got his black belt in 2009. I wanna say “look how good he is and wow look how much better he has gotten ,” but the truth is JT came out immediately after getting his black belt and was winning at the IBJJF level in the gi and out of the Gi. Also it’s so interesting to note JT’s style . And how it has changed . JT used to try to play the most modern games , but I can see now he’s reverted to high level basics . His grappling style is HEAVILY influenced by three major players I can easily distinguish similarities too. His passing game is very reminiscent of Ricardo arona , and also very much like Marcelo’s with the slices and heavy hips and misdirection side to side . His transitions from half guard to mount or front headlock to the back remind me so much of rodolfo and sometimes Marcelo. He threatens with the choke in many interesting situations to alleviate the need to scramble . He does this when chew goes for the single leg. He does it to take the back , and he does threaten the guillotine to force the north south but didn’t have the position to convert it to a choke . It’s no surprise whatsoever JT is so accomplished in the NoGi with such strong fundamental from the great masters . For a point of reference : Arona was 14-0 in Abu Dhabi and never had a point scored on him : incredible ! It’s also impressive that JT is what I call at will grappling here . He never needs to think here and it’s not because he’s just so much better. It’s just obvious that JT drills A LOT and he looks like he’s doing drills. I always say if Jiu jitsu , judo, and wrestling ever taught me anything it’s that the great guys don’t think, they just react. Saulo Ribiero says “if you think , you are late . If you are late , you muscle. If you muscle , you get tired. And if you get tired , that’s when you die .”

I love that quote. And I think you're right on with identifying his influences. His use of leg weaving and side-to-side fakeout movements in passing also remind me of Terere at his prime.

jeetkuneluke yup. And when he casts his hips it’s all Arona. Arona would just cast and hop his hips then immediately hop to the other side . Something else I just thought about too; I guess I never realized how much JT likes to pass to the right

The Danaher death squad filled that void for Americans since the implosion of team Lloyd Irvin.

Freaking incredible to watch. I’m a big fan of yours and I’m also a huge fan of JT. I really think people sleep on his technicality and accomplishments. He’s by far one of the most accomplished American grapplers on the planet and his technique is INCREDIBLE. His original instructional “passing, back takes and more” had an enormous influence on my game. Very humble of you to share this, even bigger fan now! Ossssss!!!

This is such an inspiration video for begginers, because often they get smashed and watch all the high belts thinking how they are constantly mauling others and being the best. This just shows how you have no ego showing that even a black belt can get smashed and that there is always someone better. Its a great motivation to get back on the mat and keep on training, not every day can be the best and its all about enjoying the process.

JT is the best in the world, I've been following him since he was a brown belt. Chewy, you did great, staved him off for awhile but JT's relentless pressure, skill and athletic ability took over later on. There's no shame in this, more importantly I'm sure you learned from this experience given your growth attitude and mindset. Thanks for posting and keep up with the awesome videos!

This roll is beautiful, honestly can say i learned a lot. You did a great job Chewy but JT is relentless. Even at 50% his ability to pass, his transition, his reactions. He really fine tuned the basics masterfully.

Ive been under jt for about just over 3 years now and he is honestly incredible not only as an athlete but as a coach. He is nearly impossible to sweep or even get into a sweeping position. His ability to keep his hips low makes it impossible to get underneath them. His constant pressure wears you out to the point where all you can do is try to defend.
