Great topic! Like you said, it’s really about what style and genre you’re playing. I come from the gospel background where we do a lot of accompaniment and not a lot of melody playing, so we naturally end up playing a lot of chords in the right hand. But with jazz standards as a solo pianist, it just seems like it’s always been the norm to play more chords in left and single melody notes in the right. We should practice to get good at both 🤷🏾♂️
I was very lucky 20 years ago when I said to my teacher that I don't like classical and I wanted to learn chords and normal pop/rock songs. He said to me that then we need to start learning chords also with the right hand.
Playing _right hand chords_ (instead of 2 hand chords) in the context of jazz piano is also a very interesting concept (for example playing cluster voicings under the solo line while playing a bass line on the left hand)! :)
Great tip but it's mostly true for ballads and slow tempos right ? Because when you play more bebop tunes like Donna Lee I don't really see where you can place RH chords ^^
What about drop 2 chords
