There was never a debate. Only Ronaldo fanboys, who clearly don't watch football created one. The eyeball test alone shows Ronaldo is a great finisher, Messi as vastly superior player. Ronaldo drains his teams mates for his stats but Messi improves his teammates play. In dribbling, vision, passing, creative play, team play, individual play Messi is clearly and vastly superior. Heck even in their weak areas Messi's defensive play is superior to Ronaldo's who has made a career of refusing to track back and playing only to stuff his stats. And despite all that Messi's stats are all superior. Messi is both the ultimate team player and spectacular individual who can win a game on his own. I'll repeat, there was no true debate, Messi was always the GOAT of this century. Maybe of all time.

Actually there is something you ignore, Messi didn't win the world cup thanks to his skills mostly, he won because I asked God to give him victory, to be on the Argentina side, so just to say that in reality this final match for the the WC wasn't really fair. Plus when the penalties came, I asked God again to make the French team to lose 2 penalties, and guess what that's what happened they missed 2 penalties and all in favor of the 🇦🇷 team. Haters always moved the goalposts. At first, it was Cristiano scoring more goals, then Messi surpassed him. Then it was Cristiano winning the Eurocup (although not playing the final match) and Messi not having a trophy with Argentina. Messi then won the Copa América, playing the final match and ending up as the top scorer and top assister of the tournament. And to top that off, he won the Finalissima against the current Eurocup champion. Then, not having anything else to cling to, they started saying that Messi only played for one club and Cristiano won championships in other clubs. After Copa América Messi ended up in PSG and... guess what? He won championships there also! And after all that, they started saying that Messi will NEVER win the World Cup, after celebrating everytime he lost a final with Argentina. They said he wouldn't be the greatest without that trophy. Well, now Messi won that cup EVERYBODY WANTS and very VERY few can get, so the "debate" is over and buried forever, as Lio won it ALL! There are great players like Beckembauer and Cruyff; there are magnificent players like Cristiano and Maradona, and then there are legends like Lionel Messi. Get over it!

To be honest it ended for me in semifinal UCL 2011 after his solo goal vs Real. As United fan of course I had been always biased towards Ronaldo but I knew that night Messi was in different class. Messi is THE 🐐. But my admiration to CR7 remains unchanged.

Tbh I never enjoyed watching ronaldo other than his United days. Like yes his impact in madrid was great,his hardwork determination consistency was great. He chased records to beat messi and i didn't like his approach. Hence I stopped enjoying him play. Even then I enjoyed rooney more than ronaldo. And then messi gave so many moments in comparison to ronaldo. Even Neymar ozil gave more moments tbh just personal opinion though.i honestly wished to have a messi rooney rivalry would have been enjoyable plus if rooney remained consistent he would have rivaled messi more even though messi would still win😅

This is the exact same analysis I had when comparing the all time greats...all of them missing important aspects of their careers which would immortalise them, pele being an exception because of his 3 world Cups, but he never played in europe....as for the rest, so much seperates them from Messi...from everything, goals, assists, MoM awards, Ballon d'Or's, he's shown greatness everywhere, Champions league, domestic, international...he's honestly the best of all time and I can't put my finger as to why there are still debates on this. I feel like most people hold Sentimental value on particular players because of where they are from or whether it was the player they grew up watching.

With Messi winning the World Cup his career is a close to perfect as anyone can possibly get Won literally everything with Barcelona including 2 trebles Won everything with Argentina including the most prestigious trophy of all time the World Cup Won everything individually: 7 ballon d’ors, 6 European golden boots, 2 World Cup golden balls (the player with the most of any of these individual trophies) And just for safe measure he’s got the 91 goals in a calendar year (which more than likely will never be broken) and he’s closing in on the champions league top scorer as well as the top scorer in recorded history Yea man the debate is over😂

The only individual award which they have always denied him is the puskas award for the best goal of the year,which is quite shocking.Considering the insane quality of goals he has been scoring over the years.The 2015 goal he scored against Athletic Bilbao in the copa del rey final is the most notable one that he was clearly robbed.How that goal was not considered the best is just beyond me to this very day.

Bringing in stats is too complicated because you have to include everyone, teammates and opposition stats and it turns into a giant mess, you literally have to take into account of every other player contributions that effect the stats of Messi, cr7 and how that data effects them in game. It is simply better to say that Messi slightly has a higher goal scoring ratio, just slightly but assists Messi dominates. Messi contributes more to his team and helps more to achieve goal scoring opportunities, hence why he has a slightly higher goal ratio. Ronaldo in the other hand is a striker who searches opportunity to score whether it is a volley, header, or tap in. Hence why he has a lot of goals, Ronaldo will score if he receives the ball. As opposed to Messi who creates tons of goal scoring opportunities. Basically putting Ronaldo and Messi on the same team would give messi 10,000 assists, 7,000 goals and cr7 9,000 goals but 3,000 assists. Ronaldo scores more goals but Messi is the reason he has a higher goal count. Taking Ronaldo out of the team would drastically lower Ronaldo goal count. Messi contributes alot more to cr7. So, yeah Messi is better by that fact.

I hear what you’re saying man, stats are an imperfect analysis but they’re the best tool we have to measure impact, and I try to add context in the best way I can. Ronaldo is a benefactor of his service though this is true while messi creates it all on his own, that’s ultimately why I think watching Messi is more enjoyable too

U r right Messi is better it's obvious. Cr7 doesn't score more goals than Messi dude. Cr7 played more matches. After 1000 matches, Messi scored 792 goals whereas cr7 scored only 701 goals. Who scored high? It's messiah. Lot many people do math wrong in this regard.

let's not forget that Pele won 3 WCs in a 16 team format which is half of what it currently is so one argument that can be made is that it's way harder to win a WC now than it was before! even Maradona benefited for this as it was a 24 team format and another huge argument is the level of competitiveness compared to the ancient times of Pele! i saw a few videos of Pele and his competition was always terrible, slow and old players
