3 Reasons Why I Regret Buying the Motorguide Xi3 Kayak Trolling Motor

Спорт

I bought the Motorguide Xi3 kayak trolling motor a couple of years ago, and at first, I loved it, but as I've used it on more trips, I've found several things I don't like about it.
1. Anchor Mode hunts too much.
2. The remote doesn't respond well
3. It's heavy
Bonus: The remote broke on me after a short time of using it.

I appreciate your honest review of the XI3. The issues you bring up seem to be consistent with other reviews.

Use an anchor when there isn’t enough wind. Add a gps puck. Change your batteries. Trim out your seat position. Those should help. 😊

Align the motor straight with the bow and steer with your kayaks rudder for keeping straight over longer distances. I do this with my PA14. Also lots of options for the MG remote fix. I use the one offered by TIKCNC but there are 3D printed cases people sell also that mount to the remote and provide a solid lanyard hole connection.

Do you have a rudder on your new canoe? Had similar issues that you mentioned. The rudder made a significant difference in how my xi3 performed on my F12. Plus I steer with the rudder and a foot pedal rarely needing to use the motor to turn.

Thanks! About 40 pounds… glad I’ve got a high weight limit on my yak!

I have cheap used trolling motors I got off Craigslist and an Autoboat. Couldn't be happier. If the motor breaks I can put the Autoboat on a another motor. Less than half the cost of the Motor Guide or comparable Minn Kota. Couldn't be happier.

This is concerning. I really want a Nucanoe Unlimited and add a spot lock trolling motor. Are there any other brands that make a spot lock TM for kayaks?

I know AutoBoat makes and attachment to turn just about any trolling motor into a spot lock trolling motor but I have not used it so idk if it’s any better. (Still hoping to get my hands on it!) There is another cheaper option you can control from your phone but I’m blanking on the brand. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Most kayaks are not designed for bow mount weights yet. Even if they advertise it. The Ascend 133X really is the only yak that performs well with a bow mount.

That’s true I haven’t tried a bow mount on any other kayaks yet but that gives me an idea, thanks!

@@KayakKid Keep up the vids! Another example would be a bow mounted motor on a small v hull boat, usually digs the nose into the water when the motor is running because the hulls are not specifically designed for them either. Its not just yaks that have the issue. But thankfully they are developing new concepts. Definitely check out the 133X setups, and the Liteskiff (not really a kayak).

I appreciate the encouragement! I've looked into the LiteSkiff but I would like to test it out to see how it compares with a kayak.

Nucanoe Frontier and Unlimited can handle the weight better than any kayak out there right now.

I have 2 xi3 motors and the remotes all break! The trans drives seals leak and the motor corrodes and seizes also taking out the expensive control board. Very poor quality and no help from manufacturer who knows of these defects!

You calibrated it wrong or never calibrated it. Spot- lock is super tight when calibrated correctly.

I’ve had the same issue with spot lock since day one(right out the box). My motor is about 2 months old. I hit anchor mode, and it immediately turn me 180 degrees, then start to hunt. I’ve calibrated multiple times, still no luck. I’m considering reaching out to Motorguide to see if they can offer some type of solution. Very disappointing.
