You are spot-on with your comments about John Fogerty, because CCR were so damned popular they were often dismissed as being a light weight pop 'hits' machine, are you kidding me? All that Blues and soulful riffing, not to mention that incredible voice he had in his prime, I had the great pleasure to see CCR live, in their 3 member iteration, such a powerful, clean bluesy sound, it really blew your hair back. Good work my man.

Saw Fogerty live a couple of times. Definitely an underrated guitar player. He played classic after classic but the best part was about the middle of the show he straps on an EVH signature guitar and rips a Van Halen style solo. Just the best.

The amazing Skunk Baxter solo on "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" by Steely Dan is a classic example of soloing to the chord. It's one of the greatest solos of all time, IMO. As you know, Keef R. is the master of the 1 to 4, 4 to 1 chord style. He usually does this in open G without the low string on, usually on a Tele.

Agree with your assessment of the Skunk solo. For me, another prime example is Buck Dharma’s Burnin for You solo. Chord based and exciting.

Great lesson Mark. I was listening to Sirius Radio the other day and Old Man Down the Road came on. And the I thought man, John Fogerty’s playing is deceptively simple. It’s simple but driving and melodic. And you can learn all kinds of triads. I agree he’s underrated!

Raised in West Texas 60s thru 70s where most radio stations were Country Western but could get KMOA OKC or Xrock and was crazy over ZZ TOP, ABB and the rest of Southern Rock. Alot of Southern Rock was played on C&W stations. Wish it was 70s again wild time to live. Thanks for the tips.

@@MarkZabel I was just a kid but indelible memories first scratch I put in a record was I walk the line trumpets still make me smile da da da da da dadada then ikes bass and Tina in a Wilma Flintstone dress and this kid on a Les Paul playing all these songs from the radio and then at the end everyone sang proud marry or as my dad called it Rollin down the river

Hey all, For the Biiy Gibbons solo lick... try... e8, b11 together... You're basically playing a C on the high E, against a Bb on the B string... it's really cool, maybe Mark can explain how these notes even work together in the first place...?

Key notes in a C7 chord (C, E, G, Bb). Over the G they're the minor 3rd (Bb) and 4th (C), so they're dissonant and create a "rub". Very raunchy sound!

Generally, yes. I think rhythm only can help your lead. But there are a few who didn't really play rhythm. B.B. King leaps to mind. Django is another.

When I first took up guitar ( many years ago ) I used to think that I always had to play all six strings when playing chords, I don't know why I thought that, but I did it for a long long time, thankfully we now have guys like you showing us how to do it, Thank you Mark.

I agree, I have a plain Jane Squier Strat, Affinity series, it's the best Strat I've ever played... the neck feels like it was made for my hand, no lie... I'll add, they are not all like this, if you find one, buy it, I paid $80 used for it... the moment my hand grabbed that neck, from the guitar stand the seller had it sitting in, I knew I wanted that guitar... It's been my main gigging guitar ever since... but they are not all like this, if you're lucky enough to find one, buy it, if you like Strats, you won't regret it...

Good video, I instantly wanted to pick up my guitar.

@@MarkZabel I don’t think he’s really sloppy in the big picture (at least in early days). He always has an idea that he wants to convey in the context of the song. Sometimes he seems to think: I don’t care if I miss a note, this flurry is going to rip your head off. On the other hand, if you listen to songs like Since I’ve Been Loving You, he’s playing beautiful blues, riffs, fills, arpeggios, volume swells and a clean ripping solo with incredible emotion all in the space of one song. Then take a 1969-1973 Zep concert when page is in his prime, and he’s offering up a 3 hour tour de force of 20 styles and about 50 tones every night! In that context, who cares about a missed note or two in one or two solos? The sweep and breadth of Jimmy Page was unparalleled. Ok, I’m a fanboy!

I’m also a Billy Gibbons fanboy . . . Man I love those early ZZ Top albums. Maybe you should do a deep dive on his rhythm playing. I can’t get enough of songs like Just Got Paid, and I can’t get Balinese out of my head. Just so funky and grooving.

Spot on ..Without 65/66 Clapton there would be no Peter Green ,Jimmy Page ,Dave Gilmour ,Richie Blackmore , Duane Allman etc etc .In fact the more interesting thing is the handful of players who WERE'NT o the clapton trail ..Albert Lee ,Steve howe ,Peter Banks ,Robert Fripp ) .. If he had a machine gun for copycats ,they be piled high !!! Absolutely the most seminal guitar player of the last 60 years

Your a great teacher but my fingers got confused. Great guitarist also lol. I'm a watcher to learn tab kinda confuses me , think adhd but this lesson is great. I think Stevie Ray Vaughn plays Hendrix better than him but cutting heads Hendrix would win but my favorite is Jimmy Page cause one man's slop is another's treasure...... Keith Richard's same way. Still got that ZZ JLC lick wrong. There are no bends! It's G string 15th fret, B string 13th. The dissonance creates itself.

Folks, when trying to sound like John Fogerty or Billy Gibbons, if you find yourself having to do something tecnically hard to get the sound and feel you're probably going the wrong way. Go back to power chords and double-stops (which are two-note chords or 'diads') and take advantage of open strings to ring as drones or doubled notes, or to open the door to the next chord or as foundations for a key-related lick or riff. That open string is the guitar handing you an opportunity to sound great but work less to do it. The 'reverend' would say Amen to that.

OK, so in technical terms what is the first "trick"? Not sure I get it.

Playing pieces of chords instead of chords (and also using harmonized chords from the scale instead of just playing a chord).

I really like the way you show riffs with the dots. As far as CCR, they are a band I hate. Fogerty’s voice annoys me no end. I felt CCR was the world’s most famous garage band. But we all have different likes and dislikes when it comes to music. Keep on keepin’ on!
