The pouring of the concrete slab for the swimming pool is the subject of this video. You can also see how I make a formwork and how I apply the reinforcement. I hired a company to pour the concrete.

Due to rising groundwater and rainwater, the walls were constantly calving. As a result, parts of the walls collapsed a little. Before I could install the formwork, I first had to scoop the sand of the collapsed walls. In addition, I also had to turn on the submersible pump every time to pump out the constantly rising groundwater.
I installed the formwork in these circumstances. I made the formwork from concrete plywood boards. I tapped these boards about four inches into the sand and connected them together with metal corners of stainless steel. With this the concrete slab of at least be 15 cm thick. Of course I placed the boards level and 1 meter below ground level, measured from the top of the boards. When the formwork was ready I leveled the bottom of sand within as much as possible, with a rake.
I placed construction foil in the formwork, this is better for the curing process of the concrete. I placed half concrete tiles on top of the construction foil and on top of that mesh mats of steel for the reinforcement. I overlapped these steel mats and braided them together. With that, my work was finished and the pouring of the concrete slab could begin.
The company I had hired for this came at the agreed time with a cement truck and a concrete pump. The cement was pumped through a 25-meter hose from the street to the hole in the backyard. 20 minutes later the concrete floor was poured I could start leveling. With boots on, I stepped into the liquid cement with a straight metal slab and a trowel to finish and smooth the top layer. About an hour later I was done with that.
Shortly afterwards it had rained lightly so that the top layer, unfortunately, was no longer so smooth after the first part of the curing process. They call this a concrete floor with rain damage. I knew I would still have to level the floor at a later stage in the project, so this was no problem.
The next day I was already able to walk on the concrete slab and make preparations for bricklaying the walls of the pool.

Hallo Mr Veddler, very instructive indeed. I'd have a question: how long after the pouring did you wait for finishing the slab surface? Or in other words, what is the time window to smooth a concrete slab with the trowel? Thanks.

Hello LuckyLAK17, immediately after pouring I first did a coarse leveling with a rake and then I did the fine leveling with a trowel, which made the surface mirror smooth. You have to wear high boots to do this work. It is therefore best to do this work as soon as possible after pouring. If you wait too long you won't be able to walk through it. Greetings, Martin.

The plastic film you placed down for under the concrete. How thick was it? Does that matter? I see so many polyethylene (poly) plastic sheeting but they all have different thickness. The thicker it is the higher in price. I wasn't sure which one to choose.

Hi Shelley, the thickness of the foil is 35 Micron (Mu). That is 0.0035 of a millimeter. This foil is strong enough for this purpose. It must ensure that the moisture of the poured concrete does not run directly into the ground. As a result, the concrete hardens better. The foil of 5 x 6 meters cost me €14.

Cordialement, Martin

Sorry I have so many questions. Next one is you say you braiding concrete. I have ordered all of my parts for my pool and I have started the digging process. But there are a few items I didn't get because I wasn't sure about it. I have ordered everything from Home Depot so far. Braiding, I'm guessing that is using something to attach the bars together?

No problem Shelley, I hope my answers help you. Nice to read that you have started the challenge to build your own pool too. You are right, in the Netherlands we say that we are braiding concrete when we attach the steel wire mats together with iron wire. This ensures that they remain in place during the pouring of the concrete. It is best to arrange these steel wire mats in such a way that they partially overlap each other. This ensures a more homogeneous and stronger concrete floor.

Hey, Great job.how thick was the concrete layer or how much concrete did you use.also how much time did you wait for the slub to dry before you started the brick layering process

Hi Contance, thank you. It took 4 m³ of concrete mortar to pour the concrete floor and the floor is 18 to 19 cm thick. After 19 days I started the bricklaying process.

Hi. I am from south africa. I have a concrete pool that is enforced. But i want to make it smaller it is costing me a lot of money. My big problem is my concrete floor isnt level. Can i level it over the old concrete floor or not?

Hi Arnold, I'm not a real specialist but yes I guess that you can level the old concrete floor by using cement or liquid cement floor leveler. Of course there er limits, it all depends on how much unbalance there is in your floor, millimeters or centimeters? By te way, I know there are pools that are deliberatelly build with a floor that isn't level. That assures that, when you pump all water out of the pool, all water that is left in the pool that can't be pumped is collected in a small area and can easily be removed in other ways.

Hello, How come no gravel underneath? Is it not nessesary? I'm looking to build a 8 x 2.5 pool with a depth of 2 meters in the deep end and 1 in the shallow. I will reinforce with steel but will i need a sub base?

Hi Davey, pouring gravel before pouring a concrete floor will indeed be better to better distribute the forces on the floor. I didn't do it because the contractor who built my previous pool didn't either. Maybe it depends on the type of soil. In The Netherlands the soil is sand. Maybe rocky soils need to have gravel poured before the concrete floor is poured.

What the plastic for under concrete?

  • @MartinVledder

Hi Jose. The foil prevents that the groundwater mixes with the moisture in the poured concrete. This can cause the concrete to harden in an unbalanced way which can cause cracks later on.
