    couple things I've done to speed up cycle time's, you have a 24 inch cylinder and mostly 16-18 inch wood so a bolted or welded on return stop for the knife so you don't have to have the cylinder return completely.....secondly the nature of the design, securing the end of the cylinder greatly prevents the ram from flexing, bringing it down to 2 ft from 4ft on your cylinder clevis distance, a bolt on strap (heavy metal) that goes on over the end of the cylinder basically where the rod comes out.

    So this splitter had the flimist possible hydraulic cylinder installed when I bought it, which I promptly bent and ruined. I replaced it with a much larger cylinder which works SO much better! These are great for splitting, "not that much" wood. I used mine to split wood primarily for the shops wood stove, but due to the high "hourly" cost of operation it wouldnt be a good fit for heating a whole house constantly, especially in a northern climate. Whats really best is if you can get an ELECTRIC splitter. Thats what they use often in Europe. Cheap to run, zero carb maintenance, etc. I've seen some pretty nice "farmer built" ones for sale cheap if you're patient. They use a 3ish HP electric motor with a normal hydraulic pump usually. Just hook it to 220v power like a welding machine and you're set. Enjoy the video!

    On the topic of the injection pump. Install a small low pressure diesel fuel pump that will act as a primary fuel pump. I have done this to my dad's tractor which had similar issues.

    I would probably have a three point Splitter if I hadn't bought a electric Splitter from harbor freight. Now I know what everyone is going to say but I had borrowed one and was very impressed with it. I used it on some wood at my father in laws and he bought one cuz it impressed him!! So then I bought one . I think we probably have split 20 to 30 cord between us , mostly on mine . I have split up to 2' rounds , yes two foot! With that said I do use lodge pole pine and Douglas Fir so they are not the hardest to split . But still thinking about making one for the tractor. Great video .

    You need a buschjost valve, it'll give you good flow when you don't need pressure, as it connects rod and piston side. If the wedge meets the wood, pressure increases immediately. Works a lot faster

    ChuckE2009.. The key to splitting those larger logs, is to split them along the outer edge, just like you would with a maul --- that way the smaller piece will peel off of the side of the main stump. So you'll likely need to weld on a small side table, so that your stump can sit off center, without falling on the ground.. That thing will split anything-- you just have to stop trying to split it right down the middle.. But you would actually be much better off just buying that "vehicle mounted screw splitter" (that's what it's called)--- I'm sure you have seen them before. You're supposed to remove a rear tire of your diesel pickup and mount it there and you can split all day. But instead, you could just mount an axle behind your trailer and run it with the PTO. It's a bit pricey at around $300--- but those things just WORK. You could sell this slower splitter to help pay for it.

    sorry chucky but i build a 20 ton log splitter 5 yrs ago with a 5hp honda engine on it it takes less than 2 gallons of fuel to split 8 cord of oak and rock maple hardwood firewood and i haven't had to replace anything.even tho our gas is over 7.00 a gal its still a bargain, no one here uses tractor driven splitters any longer it just doesn't make sense to run a tractor all day to do a job a 5hp motor will do with ease.love your channel dude always have but i disagree with you on this one.lol and i never have carb issues i burn top grade fuel and when i am done for the year i shut the fuel off run the engine carb dry and drain the fuel out and put it in something else like my snow blower. 3 point hitch splitters do have their place but for a home owner like me this works best in my situation, I own a tractor but still use a stand alone unit.

    Great video. Wondering does that ram have equal power pulling as pushing? Have seen splitters that split on the pull cycle so not waisting half a cylinder cycle? Great stuff!

  • @scottmcbride5514

    @scottmcbride5514

    2 жыл бұрын

    Ram cylinders never have the same power pushing vs pulling, They always push with more power, and return with more speed. It comes down to the area of the piston, on the push side the area is just the size cylinder, pi(r)^2, on the pull side it is the area of the cylinder less the area of the rod, therefore always less area, always less power on the pull. This assumes the valving on design is the same.

    Ha read 2nd page great use of that yanmar.. you could build that up like other portables. build tank, add wheels, and put a hitch on it. you could also turn it into vertical unit. that would greatly increase production and save a great deal of labor. Stay blessed my friend.

    @@officialweldingfarmingarch2041 I agree I've got about all the parts to build one but is it worth the effort to use a few hours a year. I figure a standard 4-5" cylinder with a 6-8" piggy backed for extra force as needed would give speed and power without a high GPM.
