3 PhD habits that will save your dissertation and fuel your doctoral success

The 3 habits you need as a PhD student are super simple but hugely transformative, fuelling your doctoral success. If you’re feeling stuck, like you’re not making any progress, then these 3 habits will help you get out of a rut and back on track again.
The first habit is regularly revisiting your literature review. This is super important on your PhD journey, because the further you travel in your doctorate, the more you learn and the more niche and specialised your PhD becomes. The literature review needs to reflect this! If you have a draft of your literature review, that you’ve not looked at for a while, you need to get into the habit of regularly revisiting it to ensure it is keeping pace with the direction of your thesis.
The second habit is regular writing. Most PhD students struggle with academic writing and the main reason for this is they don’t do it often enough! Develop a regular writing habit. Set a weekly date with yourself to show up at the laptop and write. You’ll only get good at it with consistency. You won’t become confident by continuing to write sporadically - that only comes with practice.
The third habit is connection. As a PhD student, it’s easy to get lost in your own thoughts. Sometimes those thoughts are negative, fuelled by overwhelm and imposter syndrome. It’s vital that you get those thoughts out on the table, alongside other PhD students who are going through exactly the same thing. When you habitually reach out to and connect with others, that internal PhD chatter gets a lot easier to deal with. You’ll also feel uplifted and inspired by having other people validate your success and getting a regular opportunity to learn from others and share your own learning with them.
Get these 3 habits into your life and you will soon feel more in control of your PhD and better equipped to deal with imposter syndrome, procrastination, overwhelm and all the other not so joyous parts of PhD life!
