Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:
1. Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
2. What are you studying? I'm a student in a Japanese "Masters of Business Administration Program"
3. How old are you?: tinyurl.com/y7xqqse2
4. How did you get into Japanese school?: tinyurl.com/yb8yylch
5. What camera equipment do you use?: I film my videos with a Canon 60D using a 30mm Sigma Art Lens and I edit with Sony Vegas Pro 10 (with some help from photoshop).

Japanese is difficult but probably the most intriguing foreign language to master in my opinion. I'm sure Arabic and Chinese would be similar but those languages and cultures don't ooze sophistication and coolness and accomplishment like Japanese does.

I usually listen to a lot of music, so if there's a song I really like, I'll listen to it 3 times if I have kanji, romaji, and English translations. So for each round, I'll try to follow along with the lyrics. And if I learn vocabulary from the song--or hear familiar words--then it's easier for me to study/pick up new terminology. The more repetitive, the better imo because it's easier for me to hear vocab and cement it to memory. I've been listening to a lot of indigo la End because their music fits the feeling of Spring, but my favourite practice song is Only Wonder by Frederic.

Try Aimer, her music is really easy to follow along to. Especially one I think the name is 今日から思い出. My favorite is ろくとうせいのよる (I don't exactly know the kanji for that one)

Yeah me too but I listen to kana boon, yeye, and most recently カネコアヤノ. I’m still a beginner but I can pick up some of their words here and there and understand a few sentences here and there
Got that aestheticc™
Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman is so good too! It's a show on Netflix and so hilariously over the top XD

All great shows! You guys need to check out Tokyo Girl on Amazon Prime, it's excellent. I think the real title is more like Tokyo Woman's Guide, but Amazon simplified.
hahahha I recognized Terrace House right away XD
Erased was absolutely amazing! The atmosphere, the music and the acting of course were superb. One of the best japanese shows I‘ve watched so far ;)
Thanks for recommending these shows. Gonna start watching these now.
*kicks laundry into a corner* I'm sure I have no idea what you mean Loretta. >_> I used Anime myself, which once I spoke to a native speaker they were like, "Wow! Your pronunciation is sooo good! But none of those words mean what you think they do, and half of the way you say them is outdated..." 😭😣 lolol
On Netflix I also watched Erased! But I also have seen Mischievous Kiss and Good Morning Call! Because sometimes I can’t pick up every word (although I may know the word) cause the speaking is a bit quick, I turn on the Japanese only subtitles to practice a little! And although I haven’t been sitting down on my own and straight up studying, HelloTalk has helped me A LOT with my daily study!
Omg! Your Japanese is freaking awesome! You could pass as native speaker anytime and anywhere!!! Loved the video! I've always wanted to learn Japanese and the chance never came. But every now or then when I watch a video like yours talking about how tv shows can actually help you with it I beging to see a little light of hope! (But I really do need to take "real" classes, I know!) I'll try to see more videos of yours!
Thank you this was so helpful! I'll definitely restart watching Terrace house soon!
Loretta! You are such an inspiration! I'm working as a rookie english spanish japanese interpreter and translator. Thank you so much
This has been on my mind watching terrace house😂thanks so much for making this!
Just started watching Erased, thank you so much, I am really enjoying it. I live in Japan and this is great for my Japanese.
I REALLY LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. I'm studying Japanese, so it was really great to find your channel.

Yes to Erase!!! The first episode sucked me in and just couldn’t sleep; a re-watch is in order. I have Terrace house next on my list. Thanks for sharing💗!!!
thank you! now I know what I can watch on my holiday
Thank you for the great recommendations!
I haven't seen any of these but I'll check out the Gourmet one for sure. Thanks for posting your recommendations, it's hard to wade through the millions of dramas out there!
I can't even count how many times I have watched Erased (anime and live action). It is a stunning show! There is so much to catch each time you watch it.
Omg I love ERASED!!! I also watched good morning call which helped me learn a lot of casual sentence structure and phrases!
I actually recently got hooked on both Terrance house and erased. Terrance house really helped me both learn and consolidate new vocabulary. I love your videos, they really inspire me to work harder at learning Japanese.
These seem like great shows to watch!
You go babe! 😄 I'm working on learning all I can to make it to Japan too.
Erased was awesome. Watched the whole thing over two days, great suggestion!
IM OBSESSED WITH LILY!!! 超かわいいからね😍!Terrace house is life!!! But I didn’t know the others! I gotta check them out!!!

Yay, I've added them to my list. :-) Thank you!!
Excited to watch these.
I really enjoyed "Erased". The gourmet show you mentioned reminded me of a show called "Sweet Tooth Salary Man", which is also on Netflix. I enjoyed it very much so I will try and track down "Solitary Gourmet". Thanks for the recommendations!
This was a dope frickin list. Arigato!
Love Terrace House! Good recommendation! Enjoying you channel. :)
You inspired me to pick up learning japanese again. I'll be checking out Terrace house and Erased and take some notes.
Thank you so much for your videos!! I also loved the younger version of the main character in boku dake ga inai machi!! 😍
I just started watching 僕だけがいない街 because of this video and I'm addicted already!
The historical and the cheap food guy shows sound great!
Awesome recommendations! Your personality is also so super cute and I love how active you are when you speak! Instant subscribe ^-^ Thanks again for the shows!
happy new year!
Oh I love the Netflix Erased show! And omg YES the kids acting was fantastic !!
Whoohoo Thank You!!!😃 Whoa the second one I've seen bits and pieces of. That guy is funny!!!😂
本当にありがとう! A show that I just watched recently is the live version of "Nodame Cantabile" It's my favorite live show so far. I want to go back and watch it without subtitles. I'm gonna check it out "Terrace House" too.
I loooove "Samurai Gourmet." It's about a retiree who finds new purpose in food. He feels like a samurai enjoying the simple pleasures in life. His acting is really great and he makes the cutest facial expressions over the food. He's just a total fat kid inside. I also really liked the thriller "1 Million Yen Women." It's a one-season show about a young author who is the son of a murderer, which obviously affects his life and reputation, and 6 women are invited by a mysterious person to become his roommates. They all have unique personalities and secrets that you gradually learn about. At the end of each episode you're like OMG, and the end of the show totally blows your mind.
Also Erased’s actors are so good! I rlly love that show!
When you imitated the Terrace House intro at the beginning of the video, I got waaaayyy too hyped
I love how unique and funny you are, thank you for this video :-)
I've seen Erased, my mom and I watched it together...it was sooo good!
Nice video) Thank you! Keep it up)
Omg i love Terrace House 😍 i‘m watching all the seasons over and over again. My favourite is aloha state too!
I’ve been watching Atelier (アンダーウェアー)and I love it because it uses so much sonkeigo and kenjogo which I feel like I rarely get to practice. It’s kind of the a Japanese version of The Devil Wears Prada.
I've never seen any of these shows, but I'll soon be looking into them. Thank you for brief overviews! Personally My wife and I love "Gourmet Samurai" !! I love the mix of the Samurai with great Japanese food! and the main protagonist is probably the best Japanese actor when it comes to humor. Unfortunately I forgot his name and I'm gonna decide to be too lazy to find out on ImDb, cuz I got a lotta WaniKani to pound through tonight.
Thanks for the tips. Another fun one I've found (on Amazon Prime video) is Sunshine Sento-Sake (昼のセント酒). On the Hokkaido accent, dabe is used extensively in the Tohoku region as well (where I used to live).
Thank you for the suggestions! I enjoy the comedies Nihongo no Shiranai
Papa Tkyo Sent me. You make great videos, keep it up.
逆にBreaking Badを見て、へんな英語色々勉強したw
Thank you for the recommendations! I enjoy the comedies Nihongo no Shiranai Nihonjin and Kekkon Dekinai Otoko as well as the NHK Taiga Dramas.
Your acting is great hahahaha!! I'm postponing Erase for a long time, I'll gice a try now, although I can't turn my subtitles off hahaha
Just checked out 日本語てくらそう, i liked it, it still is "above my paygrade" but as someone preparing the N4 i could catch some of what they were saying and understand the basics... specially with the acted skits. Thanks! I'm going to keep checking it!
I hope to be like you one day. Im in the beginning stages of Japanese. Im learning Japanese but watch a lot of Korean drama, I dont know how that works, but it does. I use the Hello Talk app, and watch japanese shows and clips on you tube.
I'm from italy, looking to move to japan, so I watches lots of doramas, terrace house didn't inspire me... but erased... well... was really one of the best I saw in times...
The two parts of Little Forest are on Netflix, as is Atelier. I highly recommend both. Oh, also Samurai Gourmet and Midnight Diner. Ramen Lovin' Girl might also be on Netflix. (live action, not anime)

I didn't know there was a live action version of Erased, I'll have to check that out
I'm much more into music and haven't watched any jdramas in nearly a decade, but I'm looking to change that. Your recommendations seem like a good place to start :)
Great video! I also can't recommend Terrace House enough to learn Japanese (if you actually make notes and look up words). So addicted. And I think I'll give Erased a watch, it looks good!
Erased is good af
When I'm not looking at a textbook, I watch Japanese Ammo on KZread. She has an absolute beginners series and teaches the material very well!
midnight dinner.. terrance show..o love it
Terrace House is life!
I love Erased so much, I was instantly drawn in and everything bad that happened to Satoru I wanted to cry so bad😭
I'm watching Erased right now, it's awesome.
you guys should watch switch birth. I love it.
I really like "Kichijoji dake ga sumitai machi desu ka"! It is a funny and surprisingly heartwarming show, and it's also a fun way to learn more about different neighbourhoods in Tokyo. I really wish they'd make a 2nd season!
Erased is one of the best Japanese dramas I’ve ever seen, I recommend it to everyone
My Japanese is not so good for watching the shows but I like your videos sooo much💖💖💖 Wish sometimes I will watch these Netflix series...
This video make me subscribe, thank you!
You're fantastic!
hi i love your videos great job making them keep up the good videos!
I love your dog so much
I have been watching A LOT of Japanese dramas and a few animes as well, I am also practicing on Duolingo. Right now I am learning Japanese at my own pace since I have a month off of school and also a few more years until I graduate from high school
Erased is the live-action adaptation of an anime (wich is again adapted from a manga) and i seriously recommend to watch the anime if you liked the live-action. Awesome channel btw, keep it going!
孤独のグルメ面白いですよね 見てるとお腹空いてきます
I also enjoy Terrace House as well!
I love erased too! I started watching it a month ago, and I've been watching it for a while now.
love you!
僕だけがいない町 Is so good ! I've watched the anime and also the live action series on Netflix , I think the best for me is the live action , & I'll watch the last show you talked about :D ありがとうございました。
I saw 僕だけがいない街 as anime first and was always a little bit weary of the 実写 version (because the anime was so good), but after you recommended it, I will give it a try. Thanks for the other recommendations as well.
I just finished watching Terrace House! I thought that exact same thing! Also, Kantaro: the sweet toothed Salaryman is about a guy who wants to eats sweets. It's just like the show you mentioned.
Erased is so good!
When I'm not in a text book I sometimes analyze song lyrics as I sing along ✨✨👌 Highly reccomend it as a way of being more engaged with the content you're listening to~

I have Erased in my queue. Now I'm gonna watch the hell out of it.
I watched the Erased anime, then right after that I saw the live action series on Netflix so I watched that too. I agree, it was really good!
Very interesting! Lol hi everyone!
Thank you for making me not feel guilty about watching a Netflix series in one sitting. I can recommend 'Erased'.
