3 Must Try Wine Regions, TOP VALUE REDS

What are the worlds best value red wine regions? The focus of this video will be on top regions that offer a broad range of worthwhile wines for under $10. If you’re not in the US, the wines mentioned here will still be rock solid values all around the world. Thanks for stopping by. I’m Bob Paulinski, MW. I’ve spent over 40 years in the wine trade, a good part of it searching out the best wine values. The focus here will be on three wine regions that consistently deliver outstanding value. The last one might come as a surprise.
By value, it’s not just cheap wine. There’s plenty of cheap, god awful wine. But rather wines that have a sense of place, track record of a high level of consistency from year to year, wines that excel over many higher priced options. This was tough, as the list could be much longer. The opinion here is solely my own, and as always, I welcome your thoughts, please post your comments, I’ll try to follow up on each one.
Where to look for the world’s best wine values? There’s a lot of factors that come into play, but as I thought about it, a few points pop-up time and time again.
1) Less high profile places, not heavy tourist areas, often away from larger metro regions
2) places where the cost of living is not sky high
3) places that have a deeply ingrained in the local culture, people drink a lot of wine in these places
4) often indigenous grape varieties or those that have developed a local following
5) In many cases, the environment is conducive to low vineyard input, yields are low, vine age is often high, which usually leads to better raw material, therefore better wine in your glass
Prices will vary by country, in the US prices will also vary
Abruzzo, $10 or less in the US
2020 Masciarelli Montepulciano d'Abruzzo $10 (tasted in video)
2020 Vigneti del Sole Montepulciano d'Abruzzo $10

Great video! Let me add 3 (not necessarily under $10, but under $20): Xinomavro from Greece, Saperavi from Georgia, and Plavac Mali from Croatia. Cheers 🥂

I picked up a La Quercia Montepulciano d'Abruzzo based on your last video. Very nice. Low alcohol, refreshing with soft tannins. It's perfect for summer. I was drinking some Garnachas, also based on your recommendation, but the alcohol is a little high for the kinds of foods I prefer during the summer. This video addresses a subject that seems neglected - easy drinking value reds. Please do more. Thanks.

I'm glad to hear the Montepulciano worked out. Some Grenache can tick up at 14%+, that can be high for some dishes. More to come. Thank you.

I fully agree with the remarks on Mendoza. Also, I think another relevant factor for its relative competitiveness in international markets is the less-than-ideal state of the Argentinian economy, which may be dragging prices down in international markets for monetary reasons. Regarding Cariñena, it's incredible that the Spanish market doesn't pay it much attention (maybe because it's a bastion resisting the dominance of Tempranillo). I bought a 2-euro bottle last year and the quality was really impressive for its context. Another great appellation not too far away is Somontano, which to me is a Spanish version of the Languedoc in that it's a sort of playground for freestyle winemaking, often outputting great values and unique products using foreign and native varieties indifferently. Look for the Viñas del Vero producer, which makes an impressively wide range of consistently solid wines between 5 and 15 euros.

Great point on the economy in Argentina. As for Carinena, it would be a strong differentiator from the market. I’ve also picked up some very inexpensive bottles in Spain that would put many 2x or 3x bottles from other places to shame. Somontano is one I rarely see, but an importer friend has a good examples. Cheers. 🍷

I spent two months in Moldova ten years ago and drank so much great and affordable wine. Sadly, only one or two producers are big enough to make it out of there. It's tough for new regions, and especially new countries to break through, when some established regions already produce wine with great value, e.g. Rioja, Côtes du Rhône, Vinho Verde.

There’s plenty of good Eastern European wines that have little export presence. The issue is less about the wine quality and more about distribution. In many cases, there are many gatekeepers between the wine producer and the end consumer. For Eastern Europe, that’s often the major hurdle. Cheers. 🍷

Really enjoyed this one. Those under the radar locations are great value wines. I wish we didn’t have the massive taxes on French wines, I’d bet there are some sub 10 dollar gems from languedoc, rhone, maybe even the loire…. Thanks for another great post. I’ll search them out to try them.

Thanks. Languedoc was on my list as well, it would’ve been the fourth option in the video. I probably drink more Rhone than anything else. Basic Côtes du Rhône is variable, some gems, others not so much. I find if a few more dollars are spent, the quality is much improved. Loire reds can be great values. Cheers. 🍷

Hi Bob, I did a bet with myself on what the regions would be: I thought you would say Rioja, Douro (Portugal) and Italy. I didn't get it completely wrong, probably because I've been following you for a while 😊. I'll try to find these wines in the UK 🤞🤞 Final note: I really cheer for you to reach many big numbers with followers, as you are such a down to earth, knowledgeable person, although I know that means you won't be able to reply to every single comment anymore 😅 Many thanks for your work❤

Hi Laura, your guesses were close. Thanks for the kind words. My channel is showing steady growth. I have some new things coming that may provide a boost. I’ve read that more than 90% of the KZread channels never get monetized and the average for those that do is 18 months. My channel hit the monetization threshold after just over three months. Plenty of work to do done, but not a bad start. Your support is very much appreciated 🍷
